CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Laziness is a state of inaction. Being lazy means you have no motivation

to do anything. This is obvious but the mistake that many people make is identifying

themselves as someone who is lazy. The terms that need to be defined are laziness,

academic performance, absenteeism, family factors, behavior, attitude, school

environment, school variables, personal factors and social problems. The dependent

variable is laziness of the student and the independent variables are the cause and

effects of being lazy on their academic performance.

Pehlivan (2006) said that, students do not go to school because the

teacher does not check the attendance, they do not understand their lecture and they

are bored in class. Also, the students has no enough expectation in education and their

friends also encourage them not to go to school.

Attwood and Croll (2006) found that students negative attitude towards the

teacher and school is related to laziness. When the students do not like the teacher or

the school, they tend to stop going to class and would not do the things or projects the

teacher want them to do.

Teasley (2004) stated that absenteeism is one of the cause why students

are lazy. She also said that family, health issues and low income are also the cause of it.

Students lost their motivation because of the reason stated by Teasley.

Based on the research conducted by the students of Gabaldon Vocational

Agriculture High School claims that there are 41.67% of the respondents that are to lazy

to do their projects and will affects the students academic performance because of the

deduction in passing the projects late or does not pass the project at all.

We conducted this research because nowadays, we observe that the

students are being lazy and we want to know what the reason or causes of their

laziness. We also want to know how laziness can affect students academic

performance.
