CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

Education has an essential role in every country. However, academic failure is one of

the major problems of the families. Many factors affect academic achievement. Literatures

have shown that performance in school was found to be affected by having a relationship

such as difficulties in concentration and poor attendance. These conditions will influence of

the adolescents relationship on academic performance of the students in Hacienda-Intal

National High School. Some of the students nowadays, especially in Senior High School,

experience this kind of problem. This study will help elaborate on the influence of

adolescents relationships in academic performance of many students involved in this kind

of relationship.

Because of this need to belong, we can say nowadays that most of the students are

synchronizing their time in both academic and being in a relationship. Engaging themselves

in this adolescents relationship enables them to feel the someone cares for them, shows

affection to them, loves them, etc. Students today are more prone to engage themselves in

adolescents relationship, nit thinking of the consequences that would arise from their

decisions. Adolescents are becoming more aggressive because of love. As a result, being in
HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 2

a relationship gains more importance among adolescents nowadays. Adolescents crave to

have relationship to which love is given without restriction. Adolescents become more

interested and involved in dating because of their desire to belong with others.

Many of the students in Hacienda-Intal National High School consider themselves cool

if they are in a relationship. Having a boyfriend or a girlfriend is like a "must-have" in

adolescents High School experience. It is the need to belong theory by which individuals

have determination to connect with others in close relationships. Before, the chances of

passing by a adolescents couple on the streets, at parks and sometimes, even at school.

When people are involved in a romantic relationship, they could feel complete.

According to Wigmann (2009), an adolescent relationship plays an important role to

adolescents as it develops the ability to commit relationships in which it builds up their

loyalty to their partners.

There are a number of possible reason why students in Hacienda-Intal National

HighSchool involve themselves in dating. One of the possible reason is sexual involvement

which might be harmful. This may take away their time studying. On the other hand, having

a adolescents relationship can be beneficial because it does not take so much time from

studying. The time that was taken away may be necessary for the students to develop their social

skills.
HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 3

In the study conducted by Kofler (2009), the feeling of competency in dating and a resulting

increase in self-esteem may have a self-perpetuating influence on students’ performance.

Dating and a resulting increase in self-esteem may have a bad or good influence on students

performance. In addition, daters may find support from their partners when school does not go well

for them, or they may learn more effectively when they study together.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

Foreign

After entering the secondary education, adolescents are facing significant academic

changes such as academic difficulty. They must adopt a high-level learning strategy

and invest sufficient time and efforts in learning in order to achieve academic

success(Duchesne et al.,2009). Although certain studies indicate that relationships

can occasionally boost academic performance at Secondary Certificate Level

(Ahaned et al.,2017), the majority of prior research indicates a negative correlation

between adolescents relationship and academic performance (Hallford et al.,2005;

Li et al., 2019; Neeman et al., 1995).

Additionally, adolescents relationship are frequently accompanied by significant

emotional changes, which can impair teenagers who dated throughout Secondary

School had worse academic achievements and higher drop-out rates. Moreover,

adolescents breakups might alter individuals self-perception and have a detrimental

effect on their academic performance (Field et al., 2012). Hallfors et al., (2005)

conduct a quantitative study on adolescents in grade 7 to 11 and found adolescents

relationship increased the likelihood of early sexual behaviors and violents injuries.
HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 10

The effect of adolescents academic development may vary depending on partners

characteristics.

On the other hand, according to Arnet (as cited in Fineham & Cui, 2011) " late

adolescents is the stage where teenagers experienced how to be totally and socially

independent. This is the time for curiosity and explorations in choosing and having

a partner, and explores this kind of curiosity that somehow leads to relationship.

However this kind of relationship may not lead to pleasant and intense love affair.

This is just a result of their inquisitive mind and a sort of finding on how to fit into

the world.

Consequently, "half of all tees have been in a dating relationship and nearly one

third of all teens have been in a serious relationship" (Teenage Research Unlimited,

as cited in Luqman, 2009). According to Furman (2002), relationships become more

and more significant to adolescents in their social world as they also develop from

puberty towards late adolescents. This shows how prevalent is relationship among

adolescents.

Luqman (2009) said that an adolescents relationship plays an important role to

adolescents as it develops the ability for committed relationships. Additionally,Pelt

HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 11

(2004) stated that those relationships help develop personality. She also added that

ut is the way of knowing one's unique qualities of opposite sex and the same thing

choosing the right life partner. In addition to this, healthy relationship provides

positive outlook of adolescents life which motivates the adolescents in achieving

goals such as performing well in the studies. According to Zulueta & Maglaya

(2004),"motivations constitutes the degree of an individuals behavior as manifested

by his interests, attitudes and aspirations to satisfy has desired goal. Provide a

positive climate for learning and thus increase academic performance. In another

way, adolescents relationship gives more negative effects on the academic

performance of adolescents.

Local

Adolescents start to have crushes and hope to approach and understand the “ideal person”

when they enter adolescence. Furman & Shaffer (2003) indicate that adolescent romance

behavior cannot be simply understood as a problem. These interactions are inextricably

linked to adolescents’ self-concept and self-worth and have a further impact on

adolescents’ individual development when peer and family relationships are involved

(Christopher et al., 2016; Tuggle et al., 2014).

HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 12

A quantitative method was used in the study. Using descriptive research design it focused

on the students who are in a relationship. There were four academic variables identified as

impacted by adolescents relationship, such as student’s assignment, quizzes or exams,

performance task and attendance. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to the

target respondents through purposive sampling. The results of the study revealed that

romantic relationship impact the academic performance of the Students in terms of the

afore cited variables (1) Assignment –students in a romantic relationship inspired one

another to do and finish their assignments on time. (2) Quizzes or exams –students in a

adolescence relationship helps one another in reviewing lessons before the exams leading

them to pass the quizzes and exams. (3) Performance tasks –students in a adolescence

relationship motivates one another to participate and perform well in their classroom. (4)

Attendance –students in a adolescence relationship inspires and motivates one another to

attend their class regularly. The results demonstrate the need for the parents and teachers to

guide the Bestlink students in engaging in a relationship in a very early age by giving them

orientation. This may somehow impact their academic performance in becoming active in

their class, that’s why it is very important that students should only be link to relationship

that positively impacts their academic performance. The parents must always guide their

children in having a relationship and have a deeper understanding to their children. The

students must balance their time between studying and having a relationship and if possible

focus first in their academic goals to be successful someday.

HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 13

During adolescence, teens become interested with romantic feelings and start to delve into

relationships due to different factors that affect them and the desire to be given love and

receive love in return. In this age, students start to be in love in their opposite sex or maybe

in their same sex since there was the existence of LGBT community nowadays. The scope

of this study was to identify the impact of adolescents relationship to the academic

performance of the students.

Provide a positive relationship, adolescents would strive hard on performing well in studies

to bring a brighter future in their relationship. Moreover, theorist suggested that relationship

has a great role in the academic performance of adolescents. Theorist also suggested that

relationship has a great role in the academic performance of adolescents.

However, adolescents relationship do not always behave in a positive way. There is are

instances in which relationship may harm adolescents and because of this, they need adults

who will guide them in developing healthy relationships (Luqman, 2009). According to

Erickson (as cited in Feldman, 2009) he suggested that each stage requires the resolution of

a crises or complied and may produce both positive and negative outcomes.
HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 14

Teens nowadays consider adolescents relationship as the number one source of stress.

(Manning et al., (2009). It results from the breakups or conflicts with partner. Even those

who give more importance on academics, spending time with partner. Even those who give

more importance on academics, spending time with one's partner may also serve as a

distraction. The tie spent with partner would consume must be allotted for studying; taking

into consideration the time management of a student being involved in adolescents

relationship influence the academic performance. A stated by Crissey (2006) in her study

about impact of adolescents relationship in high school girls, there is really a challenge in

"balancing relationship in academic performance" in a teenagers life. Crissey (2006) added

that having a romantic affair especially when you are just a student would not just give a

"source of stress" but also a disturbance. Having a adolescents relationship is really

disturbing because a student will deal on managing time between the school and in the side

that somehow leads to give academic works a lesser priority.

On the other situation, negative effects of adolescents relationships arr very evident in the

report of Namaganda (2009) saying that "developing feelings of love, two weeks before

exams can lead to lack of concentration during the time a learner should be revising and

thus failure".
HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 15

In conclusion, relationships and academics can't be joined together. On one side, the

student is spending time with his/her lifelong partner, but on the other side, the student is

busy trying to fulfill other responsibilities in School like making projects, studying, and

maintaining grades.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the research instrument, methodology, and the population used throughout

the study will be discussed thoroughly. It was indicated here the Research Design,Locale of

the study,Respondents and Sampling Procedure data gathering instrument, data gathering

procedure and the analysis of data.

Research design

The research design used by the researchers in this study is Descriptive Survey. Descriptive

survey is a method of collecting information by interviewing or administering a

questionnaire to a sample of individuals. Hence, we, the researchers conducted our survey

through administering questionnaires which served as our instrument in measuring and

collecting data to determine the influence of having adolescence relationship to the

academic performance of students at Hacienda-Intal National High School.

HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 18

Locale of the Study

This study was conducted at Hacienda-Intal National High School, Hacienda-Intal Baggao,

Cagayan inclusive from January to February 2023. Since we, the researchers, and the

respondents are students of Hacienda-Intal National High School, hence this study is

exclusively conducted within the School Campus.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

The respondents of this study are students who are currently enrolled in the school year

2022-2023 at Hacienda-Intal National High School. The researchers used purposive

sampling in identifying and selecting students in every block / class who experienced or

have been in an adolescence relationship whilst studying and were asked to answer the

survey questionnaires.

Data Gathering instrument

The researchers used survey questionnaires as their data gathering instrument. The

survey questionnaires was distributed to the selected respondents which contains set of
HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 19

questions about having an adolescence relationship and as to how it influence their

academic performance where they were given answers to choose from. The questionnaires

also contain the following (1) the students profile (a) name (optional) (b) sex (c) age (d)year

level (e) section. Answer sheet is provided to the students in every block / class of

Hacienda-Intal National High School.

Data Gathering Procedure

Upon approval by the principal and the research adviser, the researchers personally

administered the questionnaires to the respondents. The survey questionnaires consisted of

a broad range of questions aimed at gauging the student’s level of involvement in a

relationship and its adverse affects on their schoolwork. The questionnaires was answered

by purposively picked students of Hacienda-Intal National High school and were given

enough time answer the questions. Its was gathered gather at the time they are done. No

potential risks were expected. The researchers also also reminded the respondents that all

information surveyed is both voluntary and anonymous and won't be disclosed other than

it's purpose intended to.

HACIENDA-INTAL NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 20

Analysis of Data

The information and data gathered by the researchers through questionnaires answered by

the respondents on the influence of having adolescence relationship to the academic

performance of the students were examined using quantitative analysis. In analysing our

data, tallying were done to determine the weighted mean of the answers of the students. The

option that frequently chose was considered to be influence of having an adolescence

relationship to their academic performances. Be reminded that our respondents are students

of Hacienda-Intal National High School who experienced dating or are currently dating

during the academic year. In every block / class, we chose at least 5 among the total number

of students as our respondent. Students who the researchers purposively knew that are

dating and having the pros and cons of dating were chosen and were considered at the time.

After collecting the data from the respondents, the researchers will notify the participants

regarding the overall purpose.

Statistical Treatment of Data

Descriptive survey was use to analyze the data gathered in this study. The researchers

used the statistical tool of frequency count, percentages, and mean of the students responses

to determine the influence of having an adolescence relationship to the students’ academic
