Good Morning! I am Juris Viagonia.

“I am conducting a research study entitled, “Safer Grounds: Experiences


of Teachers and Students During Earthquakes”.This interview is conducted to
know your experiences, coping mechanism and insight based on the
phenomenon being studied.

“Would it be alright if I will record our conversation through audio-tape


recorder? My purpose of recording our conversation is to gather as much as
possible all the necessary information that I need in this study, and to be able to
have a smooth and spontaneous flow of discussion regarding this matter. I can
assure you that all your responses will be held confidential by assigning you an
alias to protect your name. If you agree with me and with this interview and the
recording of your responses, then you can please sign this consent form that I
will be distributing to you.

“I will begin our conversation by asking you some questions and please
answer these as best as you can. You can expound your answer to make it clear
and comprehensible. May I start?”

1.) What can you remember about your experiences during the earthquake?

1.1 What did you do then? Were you in your respective classrooms?

(I was in the classroom that time, and then I wondered why every one of my classmates
suddenly screamed, the ground was already shaking.)

(At that same time, Ma'am, I remembered that Mrs. Caballero was in our room and
insisted that we stay because she didn't feel anything until Mrs. Tedles came and told us
to leave.)

2.)How did you respond to the earthquake?(Grand Question #2)

(We immediately left the room, all of us.)
FGD 02:Panic, then...
(Panic, then...)
FGD 03: Akoa dayong ang first aid kit Ma'am then nag duck cover and hold.
(I grabbed the first aid kit, ma'am, and performed the duck, cover and hold.)

(I placed my hands on my head in case something falls on me.)

(When we left, some of us pushed each other.)
3.) What were your immediate reactions when the ground shook? (Grand
Question #3)
3.1 What did you do when the earth shook?(Probing Question #2)
FGD 01: Unaato ma'am nakulbaankotaposna remember nako ma'am nadapatdili
mi makulbaan para dilimadunggagangmga damage namahitabo.
(At first, I was nervous and then I remembered that we must not be afraid so we could
avoid any further damage.)

(I, too, was afraid, ma'am. I was with someone so when something falls, we both get hit.)

(I kept my calm, ma'am.)

(I was just following the teachers' instructions, just like what we did on earthquake
drills.)

(I got nervous and panicked.)

4.)What did you do after the earthquake? After the earthquake, you said that
you did the duck, cover and hold, what did you do right after?(Grand

4.1 You left the school? (Probing Question #3)
All FGDs: Yes, Ma’am.
4.2 Where were your rooms located? (Probing Question #4)
All FGDs: Sa third floor, Ma’am.
(Third floor, Ma'am.)
4.3 How strong was it? (Probing Question #5)

(It was really strong.)

(It was so strong, I felt it.)

5.) Did the shaking stop immediately? (Grand Question #5)


5.1 Did you leave as it stopped? Or did you leave while it was still
shaking? (Probing Question #6)

(Yes, Ma’am. We left when it stopped.)

6.) What did you feel when you were outside the school? (Grand Question #6)

(We were nervous. We were calm as soon as it stopped. All of us were safe and no one
was hurt. It was very hot outside, luckily, no one passed out.)

6.1 Were you calm when you were outside? (Probing Question #8)

6.2 But were you still nervous?(Probing Question #9)

6.3 What did you feel? Did you still want to go back to school

(Yes, Ma’am, we left all our things in there.)

6.4 So you wanted to go back for your things?(Probing Question #11)

All FGDs: Yes, Ma’am.

7.) You said that you were nervous. Did you have things with you that helped
in some way? (Grand Question #7)

(My phone. Fortunately, I had it with me so I was able to call my mom.)

FGD 02: Hmm... Actually wala man pudkoydalaato ma'am bale anolang ma'am

(I actually didn’t bring anything with me, ma'am, but if I had a whistle with me, it
would have been very useful in case the building collapses and traps me. I could blow the
whistle to call for help and be rescued.)
FGD 03: First aid kit ma'am in case naaymasamaran.
(First aid kit, in case someone gets wounded or injured.)

(My father called me immediately that time.I had presence of mind and used my
initiative, Ma’am.)

8.) What are the challenges that you encountered? (General Question #8)

(We were just scared, Ma’am.)
8.1 What else? When you went down? Was everything okay when you
went out of school premises? (Probing Question #12)
FGD 01: Daghannagtinukluraymaam.
(Many of us were pushing each other, Ma’am.)

(Everyone went out hurriedly.)
FGD 03: May ganimaamsa 3rd floor ug 2nd floor

(Fortunately, no one fell down the stairs from the 3rd floor and 2nd floor.)
8.2 Were you able to leave school immediately? (Probing Question #13)

(Yes, Ma’am. The school guards opened the gate quickly for the students to get out.)
8.3 What else are the challenges that you faced?(Probing Question #14)
All FGDs: Angubansamong classmate kay wala pa gihaponnawalailangkulba.
(Most of my classmates were still nervous.)
8.4 Did someone cry?(Probing Question #15)
All FGDs: Wala man maam.

9.) How did the earthquake influence your reaction in the situation? Did the
earthquake affect you as a student? What did it do to you? (Grand Question
#9)

(We learned that during earthquakes, we should not panic and we should stay calm. We
learned that it is important to participate properly during earthquake drills.)
9.1 What else? Did it change something in you, since before we don't
experience a lot of earthquakes, unlike now? What were the changes made
as a student?(Probing Question #16)

10.) What changes were made regarding your studies after the earthquake

12.1 Do you think what you stated earlier can help you during the
occurence of earthquake?(Probing Question #13)

12.2 Would the pushing and being nervous be repeated?(Probing

12.3 We cannot avoid getting nervous but the moment it happens again,
