SUBJECT: Traction Speed Limiting – Functional Limitations

MODELS AFFECTED: Fortis (FT) and CT Units

DESCRIPTION: Hyster offers traction speed limiting on FT and CT units as a means of preventing
the unit from operating above a specific speed on level ground. This speed limiting function is available
with premium or basic powershift transmission options. This system has some limitations that need to be
further clarified.

Overshoot
The control system for traction speed limiting only controls the throttle input to the engine which allows a
specific level of overshoot to occur due to the inertial effects of the engine and powertrain. Overshoot is a
condition where the speed of the unit will advance beyond the dash setting then the control system brings
it back to the original set-point. Hyster traction speed limiting can have as much as 2.5 mph of overshoot
with very little settling time. The time that it takes for this oscillation to stop is referred to the settling time.

Tolerance
All control systems maintain some level of tolerance allowance to account for natural variation found
between units. Hyster traction speed limiting options maintains a total tolerance of 1 mph on its set-point.

Available Calibrations
Speed sensor calibrations, which are available to service level users via the dash display on Fortis units,
are intended to be used to correct the displayed speed of the unit when the rolling radius of the drive tires
change significantly. The travel speed can be displayed through either the diagnostic menu (FT units
only), PCST(FT and CT units) or Hyster Tracker. The calibration procedure for Fortis units can be found
in Gram CI00031R3.

If units have had speed sensor calibrations performed it is important to note that these settings will never
be over-written when loading CDF files or restoring defaults. If a unit has been re-calibrated to account
for tire wear or travel speed, and new tires are installed, it will be necessary to perform the procedure as
outlined in Gram CI00031R3 again to correct it.
