ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Jesus

Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) and “Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles

and the judgments he pronounced.” (Psalms 105:5)

Annunciation of gratefulness is very vital that’s why I, as a student trainee

would like to prolong my innermost and sincere appreciation for your immeasurable

and valuable assistance, cooperation and guidance. I am fortunate enough for you give

rise to the triumph and marvellous end of this portfolio.

First and foremost, to our Almighty God, our Greatest Provider, Source of

Wisdom and the Everlasting Father for His Divine assistance and overflowing grace

He is showering upon me each day of my life. I thank Him for guiding me during my

training and for making this Work Immersion a possible one. For the provision and

intelligence He has bestowed upon me, for giving me enough wisdom and ability to

perform each task that was assigned to me and for the challenges He has given me that

made me stronger than ever. I thank Him for His comfort during the times that I am

about to give up. By His mercy, I was able to accomplish this practice without any

conflict. Most of all, I thank Him for His Word that keeps on reminding me that “I can

do all things through Christ Who strengthen me.” (Phil. 4:13)

Special thanks to Mr. Christopher T. Pascua for being supportive in all the

endeavours of the learners undertaking Work Immersion.

INTRODUCTION
Involving oneself deeply in a particular activity or interest really give a taste of

the real world.

Coursework can provide a thorough foundation of knowledge and theory, but

some of the best learning can take place in the workplace itself, especially when other

people- employees and/or patients- are involved. Immersion offers students an

important opportunity for hands on education. It reveals to students the real life

purpose of what these degrees are all about. Admittedly, the medical profession has

evolved into more of a science, and need to know the scientific underpinnings for what

they do. Yet, the real world is always different than the didactic world, which tends to

be more black and white. Learners go into immersion without a full understanding of

how health care really works and it’s where they fill in those gaps.

Students identify areas of interest during coursework and design their

immersion experience based on their interest. Through their instructional courses,

they’ll expand that passion into a clinical question that can be researched. In the

immersion, they’ll study that question and make recommendations for change. They

will search not only the topic of interest but also where best to apply that hands-on

research. They may seek out a previous employer or someplace they’d like to work in

the future. This gives them the chance to go to meetings they’d normally not be invited

to, like budget, staffing, literature review- the sorts of meetings that will help them

learn different aspects of the nursing field. In addition, work immersion is not done in

vacuum. Students will have mentors to guide and advise them through the process, and

to answer questions and provide feedback.

Learners under the STEM strand at Licerio Antiorda Sr. National High School

are required to participate in work immersion program. They spend hundreds of

supervised hours in a real world work environment researching and solving actual

health care challenges in their area of interest. Work immersion has been a vital

component of a graduate education. Apprentice liked being able to tailor education to

fit the needs of their chosen career path.

In the Philippines, youth inoccupation hinder meaningful economic growth.

The sector’s lack of mastery, aptitude, and work experience puts them at difficulty.

One technique to unravel this is through the Department of Education’s Senior High

School (SHS) program, ushered by the K-12 education reform. According to YKS

(2018) students will possibly be acquainted with the work ethics, will expand

awareness about the safety in the workplace, the rights, responsibilities, learning the

efficient method to resolve differences among co-workers. The said learning

experience that the students can obtain from it range from 160 hours and surely make

it possible and assist students as they bring into the light themselves with the agency

simulation and utilize their excellence in areas of specialization.

Work immersion is profitable to learners who desire to be well trained and

become skilled about the life of being employed. It prepares them to the advanced

world at the end of it and makes them equipped with relevant expertise. Students’

applicant gets to discover themselves and inaugurate their professional development.

Immersion assists students to turn out to be an asset to the team in doing tasks because

they will be supervised, motivated and inspired by specialists in their respective field

to find out their capabilities. Furthermore, this program provides instance to live out

actual methodologies of a certain job using the real tools, equipments and documents.

In effect, the work place becomes a progress spot for student trainee to carry out what

we have learned from academy.

Everyone was concerned that, without work immersion, job prospects might

become scarce in the future. It is helpful to consider the goals that one wants to

accomplish prior to starting the immersion. From the start, lay out what you’ll need to

complete each week. For the future immersants, choosing the right preceptor is the key

and you may also think about someone you can continue to use as a lifelong mentor.

Being proactive and organized helped you fulfill all the requirements and meet your

goals absolutely. The evolution from being a student to becoming part of the medical

world helps immersants to eventually excel in a specific career.

VALUES AND ATTRIBUTES

Communication
Excellent Communication is vitally important in all areas of medical
professional. One must be a good listener, as this is the key to better communication.
Simple and concise communication with colleagues is essential as is legible writing of
patient records. What’s more, because we live in a multicultural society, it’s necessary
that patients are communicated with in language that they understand.

Quick Response
Be ready to respond quickly to emergencies and other situations that arise.
Quite often, health care work is simply the response to sudden incidences, and always
be prepared for the unexpected.

Respect
Respect goes a long way. Respect people and rules. Remain impartial at all
times and mindful of confidentiality requirements and different cultures and traditions.
Above all, Respect each other and respect the wishes of the patients. One who respects
others is highly respected in return.

Empathy
Have empathy for the pain and suffering of patients. Learn how to recognize
the symptoms and deal with it efficiently.

Commitment
Everyone should possess a high level of commitment to their roles. Put in the
overtime in order to make sure that patients’ needs are met.

Compassion
This refers to treating patients correctly, in a respectful manner. Consideration
should be paid to their beliefs and their dignity should be protected at all times. They
should be able to trust their nurse to provide a high level of care.

Courage
Do what you really think is right and be brave enough to confront fear of
difficulties but always remember that you are accountable for your actions.

Collaborative
All must be willing to work closely with colleagues across the organization to
solve problems. When the health care is complex and barriers are all over , everyone
need to make sure to collaborate on care around the patient.

Technologically Savvy
With the advent of electronic medical records, clinical decision support, health
information exchange and more, everyone must be technologically savvy. They should
be technologically competent.

Critical thinking skills

Every single one person needs people who can think on their feet and solve
unique challenges.

Resourcefulness
This goes beyond not just doing what they’re told but are individual thinkers
who can take care the next level.

MHO HISTORY

Buguey derived its name from the Ibanag word “Nabugay” which means capsized. Story
goes that in the early 1600’s the sea pirates attacked, plundered the town, and looted the
houses in revenge of the Spaniards who attacked them in Mindanao and Sulu. They came to
see the biggest bell, the Sta. Barbara bell installed at St. Anne Church, one of the oldest
churches built in 1610. They forcibly took the bell as a present to their Sultan. En route to the
high seas, a strong gust of wind from the northwest blew fiercely the vintas carrying the huge
bell sank in the Babuyan Channel. The people who witness the mishap shout with joy in their
Ibanag dialect “Nabugay Ira” the incident that happened to the Moros reverberated even to
the distant areas and the word “Nabugay” became and accepted name of the town, but
evolved to its present term “Buguey” as time passed by.
Buguey was founded on May 20, 1623 by virtue of a Royal Decree issued by the King of
Spain. However, in 1901, it was expropriated and was reduced to the status of barrio, tired of
their political misery and in their desire to uplift the politico-social status of the municipality, a
group of political leaders led by Alejandro Varilla, Gregorio Valle, and Placido Calaycay
petitioned the American Governor-General to restore Buguey to its former status. With the
intercession of Vicente Marasigan and Ex-representative Venencio Concepcion, Buguey was
restored its municipal status on July 26, 1915. It was then that hundreds of cows and pigs were
slaughtered as people celebrate the occasion for the feast of St. Anne, the Petron Saint of the
town.
As Buguey expand and become a progress one, the buildup of the Municipal Health
Office was rendered. The fund that was used to construct the MHO came from the national and
evolves to the Local Government Unit. It was created for a purpose to provide the basic health
services, and implements the different health programs of the department of health for the
prevention and control of diseases. This serves as also as the first aid to the Bugueyanos to
address the immediate needs of the residents. In connection, the Municipal Health Office of
Buguey is a PhilHealth Accredited Rural Health Unit, located at Centro, Buguey, Cagayan and
the said health center is one of the biggest building health centers in Buguey.

DAILY ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT

DECEMBER 02, 2019

An exhausting but absolutely an exhilarating plus gratifying date meant for me. My
daylight hours were a marvelous foundation to establish target for the completion of my
Work Immersion. On this surprising day, we were grace with the presence of all the
employees of our adored municipality in Buguey for we joined them in their flag raising
ceremony. Later than that, we were oriented by Ma’am Jessica, the human resource
management of the municipality regarding the rules and regulations of our designated
offices, then, subsequent to the orientation, she toured us on the different parts of the
town’s workplace and she came along with us in our own headquarters to introduced us to
the different staffs of our chosen agency. It is awfully pleasurable and fulfilling to be a key
member of Municipal Health Office (MHO) organization. I am delightful and ahead
sanctified as they open my mind to the elements particularly in my preferred profession
and become recognizable with work related environment to boost my aptitude. Through
the help of Ma’am Rica Grace Donato, one of the experts, I am well educated on how to
get the blood pressure using the manual blood pressure equipment, the respiratory rate,
and pulse rate as well. Aftermath, we stayed in the laboratory along with the supervision of
Ma’am Lycelle Jane Urbina, the medical technologist. I was also assigned as her secretary
who wrote the essential information about the patient and asks me to go with her in the
municipal office to submit some papers. We also arranged the records of all the patients
starting from January 2019 up to the present and we learned how to use the microscope
properly. We come up with the different tests, which includes blood tests and urinalysis
which means to examine for the presence of disease. Unfortunately, after viewing on the
microscope, we found out that the old woman suffers from UTI for a reason that there are
many bacteria presents in her urine and the white blood cells or the past cells are too
numerous to count. The entertaining part of immersion is more likely to be an
extraordinary mainly after working the whole day, I am motivated constantly to be
acquainted with the knowledge I have gained. My accomplishment at the moment will be
of great since it will become supplementary to my success as a student and as a public
servant in the future.

Work Immersion is extremely a great extent not only to acquire
knowledge and the relevance of its theories however; it’s definitely the
manner on how we deal with the different professionals and particularly
on how we approach different patients in the midst of their torments. It’s
merely my second day at the Municipal Health Office but it feels like I’ve
been effectively working there for so long. During my earliest working
hour, I’ve cleaned the office with the help of my co-immersant and the
utilities in attendance there. We don’t have a bunch of patients this day
because of its bad weather condition, luckily, I still learned a lot from the
specialist. The first thing I performed is to determine and verify the blood
type of the patients, and I also familiarized myself on the equipments worn
and used while doing the job. Next is on how to discover the blood sugar
level of the patient and to find out if it is normal or not. Afterwards, I am
task to get the blood pressure of the two policemen and the arrested
person. Then we stay on the admission area to admit patients and organize
their records to be as one. Lastly, Ma’am Wella, one of the on duty
personnel taught us to cut and systematize the dressings intended for the
patient. It was actually interesting to stay in the Medical World to discover
new ideas and wisdom. It was dreadfully a great day to practice,
comprehend and appreciate all those possessions anticipated for the

2 upcoming days to move forward.

My third day at the Municipal Health Office (MHO) gives me a reminder
that I am auspicious and beyond fortunate for I have the ability to adapt quickly
to challenges and changing environment. Early in the morning, we swept and
mopped the floor. Ma’am Leizl A. Viejo, one of the emergency response team
(ERT) extremely admire our eagerness to go in their office to merely comply
tasks in spite of the strong winds blowing from the Northeast and moderate to
occasionally heavy rains. Supervenient, she ordered us to form a cotton balls
used for critical applications for absorbency such as after an injection or
pricking a patient’s finger to test blood sugar or others. After forming the cotton
into balls, we wrap it up with paper and while doing that, I raise a query
concerning why we necessitate to do that. She then stated that, we need to
package them to assure integrity and purity. Furthermore, purifying cotton balls
for medical purposes removes pesticides and leaving the cotton in its purest
form. Unluckily, after fulfilling the assigned task, we were informed that Hon.
Lloyd M. Antiporda hereby mandates half day suspension of classes including
immersants in all agencies and offices in the municipality of Buguey.

Monday filled with ecstasy and positivity is a superior day to start
the week. I am fully blessed for they give me the chance to officially
immerse myself at Municipal Health Office for I vision to become like them.
I am currently in page 4 out of 20 pages. We joined them again in their flag
raising ceremony but unlike before, we are not just grace because of the
presence of all the employees nevertheless, we are glad enough on behalf
of the attendance of Mayor Lloyd along with SB Adolfo Miranda, while
waiting for them to begin the rite, we took a picture together with SB
Adolfo. Afterwards, we went to our own selected office and we stay a
minute in the admission area to note down the vital signs intended for the
patients. Then, we walk off to the laboratory to lend a hand to Ma’am
Lycelle to do the general cleaning. I wiped the bulletin board, cabinet, the
table and the wall of the room also. Next thing I did is to wash some parts of
the air con full of dirt and dust. When we finished it, I leave the laboratory
and hurriedly set up myself in the admission area to acknowledge patients. I
was charge to get their vital signs. In the afternoon, Ma’am Rica requested
me to write the records of all the patients today including their diagnosis
and medication. On the other hand, Ma’am Rica told me that I will just
continue doing it tomorrow for I must go home. In fact, all the tasks I’ve get
done today was hilarious but nerve-racking at the same time because I can’t
clearly read the penmanship of the doctors however; it was actually a great

4
experience to make known myself on that state of affairs.

Every day is a blessing to experience and learn something new once
more. Early in the morning, I assist Ma’am Liren, the casual utility and
Ma’am Jodelyn, the permanent utility in the MHO to clean the workplace. In
addition, I keep on working my unfinished task yesterday. After that, I
interview patients about their personal information and their chief
complaints, present and past illnesses. It was my first time to do that so if
ever I don’t know what to put in their chief complaints, I asked for the help
of Ma’am Rica or the other experts being there. Patients ages 20 and above
have a lot of queries to answer like if they smoke or drink alcohol, if they are
eating instant foods weekly, or they are eating 3 servings of vegetables and
2-3 fruits daily. There are also possible questionnaire to determine heart
attack, stroke and probable angina. Moreover, I also questioned them if
they was diagnosed as having diabetes and if they responded “no” or “do
not know”, there’s a follow up questions if they felt any symptoms of the
said illness like; polyphagia, polydipsia and polyuria. Since it was my first
time, it sense like what are these words? Hence, I ask over Ma’am Rica and
she explained it to me that poly means “agkara” in Ilocano, phagia means
food, dipsia means water, and uria means urine. My last completion is that,
I learned how to performed Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) which
essentially composed of 30 compressions and 2 breathings. My mind as of
now is replete with knowledge that I can use as a community disciple in the

5
future.

As we commence the work immersion on this day, little did we know
that an exciting adventure was about to begin again. Inasmuch as we reach the
Municipal Health Office, I instantly went to the admission area to write again
the records of the patients yesterday. Afterwards, we set up the table and
prepare the admitting form. Ma’am Rosalyn Lobo, midwife 1 at MHO
commanded us to clean the drawer and remove the unnecessary things inside
of it. For the second time, I admit and interview patients and directly write
their records in the logbook. I was also assigned to take in charge in giving
medicine to the patient with the help of Ma’am Romalyn. Before they will
about to receive it, they need to sign it first in the DOH and LGU logbook. To
finish the task, Ma’am Joanne Corpuz, one of the ERT demands us to decorate
the Christmas booth of the Municipal Health Office for the preparation of their
Christmas Party tomorrow. With all the best we can, we apply all the

6 knowledge we get in decorating from our dearly loved school.

7
DECEMBER 12, 2019
After everything else, today is the last day of our second
week at Municipal Health Office. Knowledge and experience are
far and wide in me. We continue beautified the Christmas booth
through the guidance and assistance of Ma’am Emervie, Ma’am
Lycelle and Ma’am Mildred and we come to an end on time.
Then we went to the MHO to admit patients. When we were
about to go home, we encounter a grade 8 student that was
crashed by the tricycle. Her foot was sprained so instead of
going home, we took care of her and make her feel better
because that’s definitely our job.

My chosen profession is ever changing and diverse. You never know who
you will be caring for tomorrow. Every person is different and each one of us
reacts differently to certain situations. Early in the morning, I am assigned to
clean the wound of the 10 years old boy in order to help and keep the sore from
getting infected. At first, I am nervous and tremulous to work with it, fortunately,
because of my ability to confront, deal with and act in spite of my fears, I did it
and this is the key to the happiness of the patient and contribute also to my
success as an immersant. After doing that, I feel so relieve and complacent for I
am eventually reach the point in life where I am not afraid of anything. It can be
challenging for everyone to conquer dread yet all we need is the chance to get
the excellent education required to become superb in this field.

9
My fondness and deep rooted passion in this profession enable
me to serve my patients well. by now, my task is to stay in the phi health
and non phi health desk to interrogate patients if they own a phi health or
not and ask for their names, age and their address then instantly write it
down on the logbook. In the afternoon, ma’am Rica shared her
knowledge on the needle insertion angles for the four (4) types of
injections as well as the primary vital signs. Within this day, I learned how
to communicate effectively at all levels. I also was lucky to be granted
with the blessing of being able to work with professionals that really
cared for their patients. This is what I hope to be able to do in the future:
providing extraordinary care every day.

The most joyous part of my work immersion was the travel. Going to different
hospital was a delightsome experience for me since I have learned new techniques on
how to deal patients in bringing them to the hospital. I was introduced to new
experience from the ERT member; Ma’am Wella, my profound thanks to her for calling
me to join her in referring pregnant woman to Aparri District Hospital. Upon arriving at
the MHO, Ma’am Rica, our dearest CI begin to explain to us the four (4) different ways
to take medications to diagnose, treat or prevent illness. The unforgettable message
that she was stated about the lecture is that, “Drugs can be dangerous though, even
when they’re meant to improve our health. Taking them correctly and understanding
the right way to administer medicines can reduce risks”.

Slay my Friday spark. The greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able
to experience it for the first time. Sir Cesar, one of the drivers of the ambulance
asks us to go along with him to attend the Blessing and Inauguration of Barangay
Health Station at Barangay Minanga Weste, Buguey, Cagayan. In the afternoon, we
make cotton balls from cotton rolls. Afterwards, Ma’am Rica provided us again a
quiz for all our lectures since Wednesday. Super thanks to all the personnel of
MHO for they are like a superhero that always arrives just in time to stop us from
getting bored always.

DECEMBER 23, 2019 13

Monday sets the tone for the week. My job is to stay inside the MHO to
interview patients. My career has many invaluable elements which are necessary
to ensure a good quality of care. Its process is developed to encourage
individualized care; this then achieves meeting all patients’ needs in and out of the
MHO. Interviewing patients is the first very important metros in my field. This is to
determine details of their current health, family history and personal needs.
Interviewing can be very invasive for a patient this is why we need to consider their
privacy in the MHO and around family. It allows us to build n interpersonal
relationship which is increasingly essential for the patient. My connection with all
the patients permits them to trust and feel comfortable with me and the people
surrounding them while being cared for.

Coming back to work after a two days vacation reminds me that every
day is a fresh start to work and I should feel uplifted and energetic for I gave
myself a break. When we reach MHO, MA’am Romalyn ordered us to make a
cotton ball from cotton roll and wrap it with paper. After a while, Dra.
Inocencia D. Saniatan tells us to go infront the Municipal Town Hall to join for
the Local Government Unit of Buguey together with PNP personnel, BFP,
Barangay Official, PAG ASA Panthers and other government and non
government organization in the Simultaneous Indignation Rally. I was
surprised for they assigned me to conduct the National Anthem and Buguey
Hymn to start the mini program regarding that matter. The activity aims to
denounce all forms of violence, terrorism and atrocities in support to the
implementation of Executive Order No. 70.

DECEMBER 27, 2019 15

There is no tomorrow and there was no yesterday, I truly want to
accomplish job, so I must engulf myself in today. We are expecting a lot of
patients today but we are not allowed to admit them since Dra. Saniatan is
out. It was not actually boring because there are still works to be done. Some
people drop by just to check their blood pressure measurement and I was task
to do it for them. Blood Pressure is one of the essential and widely used
assessment tools in healthcare settings, therefore I always make sure to
double check for the accuracy and reliability of the patients blood pressure.
Recording blood pressure is a vital one for me for a reason that it gives me a
bunch of confidence to myself also to the patient I am concerned for.

My 16th day of work immersion is benign. First and foremost, we
join in their First Flag Raising Ceremony of the year. Afterwards, we went
to our designated office, unfortunately, Dra. Saniatan is still in vacation
that’s why there’s so little job I have to do by now. I just need to arrange
the records of the patients and then suddenly, I decided to work on with
my journal to release the state of being bored. It was a gentle day and
nothing happened much.

JANUARY 03, 2020 17

This day is the day before the weekend, the last day of the work
week for me. My mind was feed by the knowledge and wisdom that
Ma’am Rica shared to us. She mentioned that people working in the
medical field frequently use sterile gloves and need to know to properly
wear them. Putting them on the right way can prevent the transmission
and contraction of infectious diseases to both the patient and the health
care provider. She demonstrated to us that we can put on sterile gloves
by ensuring that our hands are clean and then sliding them into the
gloves. Ma’am Rica always do great things with great love for us. She’s
more than a CI for us. Whenever, she’s around, she won’t let us go home
without gaining knowledge from her.

JANUARY 06, 2020 18

It was such a splendid start of the week. A journey with the patient was
another thing that impacted my metamorphosis. I opined that my chosen career
would be convenient for me but at times, it can be terrible and sorrowful. Even
though, I thought I was firm and could handle seeing most everything, there are
things that can still affect me, principally the patient we need to refer to the
Grupo Medico de Dios hospital a while back because of her condition. This was
actually hard since the 74 years old woman named Conception Bautista cannot
do anything on her own. Upon reflecting after the travel, I was sure that
choosing health care was the right decision for me. It makes me happy to help
other people and I learned that this work is hectic but gratifying. My
accomplishment for this day has given me confidence in the path I have chosen
which was something I didn’t have before.

JANUARY 07, 2020 19

It’s chooseday. I choose to smile. Choose to love what I am doing.
Choose to be a blessing to every patient and choose to be patient to the
patients who are not patient. This day is my schedule at the philhealth
and non philhealth desk. Welcoming and being there for patients reflects
not only a positive but shows commitment, respect and value to the
patient. Upon staying here for the second time, I learned that I must take
time to listen and understand the patients experience without being
judgmental and to deliver the care needs of the patients.

I am already through half of the week but it doesn’t stop me from
working hard to achieve my goals. I went to the Municipal Hall Ground to
experience how it feels to stay there for the 2020 Business One Stop Shop
(BOSS). Today is its third day and will run until January 20, 2020 daily from
Monday- Friday 8:00 AM- 5:00 PM. It aims to register and renew business
permit on time to avoid penalties. I also familiarized myself to the
Sanitary Permit to Operate; this includes Sanitary Permit number,
Registered Name, Name of Establishment and the address of Business. By
now, I don’t just interact with patients but to clients as well.

JANUARY 09, 2020 21

I’ve been working from Monday to Wednesday, then Thursday
comes around and I can feel relive because I know that I am doing great.
Soon after a patient arrives on the MHO, I also begin my assessment. On
this day, I take several measurements to establish a baseline for further
observations of that patient. Among these measurements are height and
weight and vital signs. Measuring accurately is not difficult, but sloppy
measuring practices can result in enough variation in my results to
negatively affect things such as BMI calculations. However, I am grateful
because Ma’am Rica is there to guide me. It’s important to get in the
habit of measuring height and weight correctly.

The last day of Work Immersion was definitely a day to remember.
MHO family will always hold a special place in my heart for all the precious
memories I had there. More than anything, this activity really helped me to
appreciate those medical professionals and the work they do. It helped me
to see what it feels like to be like them. The insights we gained, the friend
we made, the conversation we had are things I’ll forever cherish and carry
with me for the rest of my life.

WEEKLY ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT

1ST ACHIEVE
Experience presents us the test first and the lessons

W
later. With this activity that I joined for instance, I
totally figure out why it was so called an immersion. It
was to throw or absorb ourselves into the situation of
others. During the first week of work completing the
tender, I was overwhelmed by the work and the
responsibilities that were positioned on me, but with the

E
help of my supervisors and the experts who had years of
experience in the field, I am certain and I felt extra
confident, convinced and supported as I knew that my
exertion would be doubled checked and any
uncertainties would be well elucidate. By monitoring

E
and learning from them, I cope to pick up tips and well-
read different types of skills through dealing and
keeping in touch with other professionals. It was an
ecstatic for me as it did make me use all the techniques
and concepts I learned at my beloved school and I had

K
the opportunity to apply them to real life situations. My
sincerity, hard work and dedication coupled with my
desire in my picked profession leads me to an unending
proficiency and all I can utter is that “Experience is the
Best teacher” and nothing compares to the knowledge
that it gives us.

2 nd THINK BIG

W My experience in my second week at Municipal

Health Office transformed me for countless reasons. I
did not set any prospects for my experience in the
beginning because I was not absolutely sure what to

E
expect. But, I ended up adoring and loving every
moment of my immersion from day 1 up to the
present. I began my job knowing that I am
wholehearted on to lend a hand to people, and
having an opportunity for this passion. I ended this

E
week with knowledge on serving people as well as a
way to continue doing so in the future. I learned a
lot about myself for the difference between knowing
what you want to do and actually doing it is a huge.
Caring for another individual is much harder than
it seems, nevertheless it is also incredibly rewarding

K
in the end. Each step of my concentration and
engagement in this field gave me an approaching
manner for becoming part of the medical world.

rd CONQUER YOUR FEAR

3

W It does not suffice to simply describe what I did; it

is crucial that I am able to reflect on what I learnt,
and this influenced me to pursue my career in

E
medicine and confirmed that it was the correct choice.
I am proud to say that I already finished my goals for
the week. My work environment had become
comfortable with the friendly, approachable and
cheerful nature of the staff of MHO which was essential

E
for me to effectively absorb all the knowledge and
acquaint myself with the work of MHO personnel.
Everybody on the MHO has different skills and

from experiences which is necessary in my picked
avocation. The transfiguration I made during my
week 4 is priceless to my personal and professional
goals of getting into medical world and becoming part
of it. My immersion created an assurance about my

5 th YOU MADE IT

W Work immersion is a very brief, experienced based

E
learning opportunity that could range from a day to a
couple of weeks. It can take numerous forms but the
most common I did this week is observing medical
professionals as they go about their day to day tasks. It
allows me to apply what I have learnt in the classroom
to real world professional situations. My experience can

E
do so much to help me get my foot in the door of my

6

W I ended this week with a lot of gratitude for all

the hands on experience and trainings I have gone
through. MHO family was very accommodating and

E
patient in teaching us how to perform the different
procedures and tasks given to us from the first week up
to the last week. I have leaned a bunch of new things,
insights and skills that I could be used in my everyday
activities. I realized that readiness and quick to
instructions are very important in dealing with health

E
related activities. Accuracy and precision is essential
particularly in taking measurements and interpreting
results. The entire experience was worth to treasure
and has opened a gateway towards success.

THE GIFT OF NURSING

As an immersant, I would say that with each rotation comes at
least one remarkable experience that I cherished throughout my
journey from students to professional nurse. For me, that moment
came on the day I observed and actually experienced it how to find
out the blood type. This was my chosen “dream day” experience set up
by our Medical Technologist. It had such an impact on me that I
want to pursue medical technologist, for staying at the laboratory is
what interests me most. It truly amazes me how Ma’am Medtech
demonstrated to us the proper usage of the equipments. In medical
courses, there is no room for carelessness. You always have to be
cautious and attentive and of course presence of mind is very
important, she said. I strongly agree to that and upon reflecting
while watching her to do the task, I become conscious that being a
Medical Technologist is not really my passion as I compared to what
is the difference between LIKE and LOVE, the answer goes like this,
“When you like a flower, you just pluck it but when you love a flower,
you water it daily”. It is absolutely right, that time, I am just amazed
and being magnetize to the workplace but not the work itself. I
always craved about the acts of kindness, genuine thought of
concerns and the caring that only nurse can provide to their patients
every day. I was able to see a vision of myself as a caring nurse
professional and not as a Medical Technologist. I am blessed; for the
laboratory workplace only captivates my eyes but not my heart. My
own thoughts reminded me of the true gift of nursing; the act of
opening our hearts and unselfishly giving ourselves to our patients,
their families and our colleagues.

REFLECTION
An attitude is an important thing. It can shape the way individual sees an

experience and how observers see the individual. An attitude can entirely make or

break an experience. This is as true in MHO experiences as it is in life. My experience

at the Municipal Health Office was without a doubt unique but I feel its uniqueness

was in what I made of it, something every immersant can do for themselves. If there is

one lesson to gain about my experiences, it should be that the success of a MHO,

whether a preceptor ship or group experience is entirely what the student makes of it.

Knowing what I am doing surprised me. The smallest skills I learned in the

MHO birthing center, laboratory and admission area became the skills I used on a

regular basis, the ones that made the biggest difference in my training. Trying the best

I can just to provide my patient a special care to meet their needs make an enormous

difference to even the complex patient. The attitude in learning these skills should be a

positive one to give the best possible care to them and in order to do this; I must start

by practicing the best possible skills in laboratory, birthing center and admission area.

Every day in the medical field presents a new challenge, I will come upon things I

didn’t even know I am afraid to do, but with the help and guidance of the experts and

supervisors, I get through the experience and be better for it. I should seek out these

challenges and do what scares me. If it scares, I now imagine what the feeling would

be when I have that “RN” at the end of my name, those little letters making me

responsible for my patient’s care. As a student, we need to advocate for ourselves,

gaining as many experience as possible before we graduate and for our own. Expose

myself to as much as possible. If a nurse has a patient getting a procedure done, ask to

watch. If another nurse’s patient needs a dressing change, ask to do it. Be determined,

remember to wake up thinking “I get to practice for my career today”, don’t go on

with the “ugh, I’m tired, why do I have to be here” attitude. I always remember that

my education is my choice. Nobody will force me to attend immersion like this, sure

there are consequences for not going, but ultimately the decision to be in school and to

attend work immersion is extremely me.

We all get tired, we all have challenges outside the school, but with a positive

attitude about learning and a little determination to succeed we can all get through any

hospital experience, learn a great deal from it., and enjoy the learning. I can’t say

enough; any MHO experience will be what you make of it. Two students in the same

field can have incredibly different experiences if one goes in positively and the other

goes negatively. Medical professionals will notice who the students are that wants to

learn, they will seek you out to teach you if they think you want to be taught. There

will always be the one intimidating, scary or grumpy staff. From my experiences, I

have learned that they usually can be won over if you show them that you are a serious

student, you are there to learn from them, not to judge the way they practice. If they

notice that you are just stuck on autopilot, doing only what is absolutely required of

you in the workplace, they won’t have an interest in teaching you.

They say life is what you make of it, well, it is my opinion that the same as true

in the medical field experiences. The more you as a student advocate for yourself, the

more experiences you gain exposure to, the better nurse you will be in the future. You

will be more prepared for your eventual practice and feel more comfortable joining the

professional world. Remember that, you are more prepared for medical than you think.

You will make mistakes, we all do, and nurses with years of experience still make

mistakes, learn from them and move forward. Keep a positive attitude and realize that

you are learning. Never be afraid to try a skill again just because you made a mistake,

you should in fact force yourself into this experience again so that you know you can

do it. It would be hard to find a nurse who didn’t miss trying to insert an ATS, but with

practice we all become comfortable with it.

Skills will come with time and practice. You will be scared; there will be days

you want to quit. There will be days you will question if nursing is for you. Over time

these days will become few and far between, and you will feel the rewards of nursing.

A patient’s thanks and appreciation will make all the hard work worth it. In regards to

mistakes, Ma’am Rica, our mentor had this to say for all of us “It’s the learning curve;

none of us are expecting you to be perfect, were just expecting that you try your

hardest and show us you want this”. So remember, we’re students, not super heroes,

we won’t be perfect but with a positive attitude we can make any experience a great

and rewarding one.

SUMMARY OF WORK IMMERSION

Nothing beats experience as the perfect learning tool. Since childhood, I have

always seen myself working in the hospital. The sight of suffering people has always

triggered some sympathetic feelings in me. Often, the sight of the sick would make

me so uncomfortable that I always desire to help them. Being a very inquisitive child,

I would inquire about the conditions and go into the trouble of thinking about the

solution to the problem. My passion for nursing manifested itself right from the

childhood times whenever I see either my mom or dad suffers.

As a trained student, I have great yet mixed expectations for the career as I

believe it is calling and I am blessed for I am one of them. Unlike other professionals

who just work with an intention of making money, or due to lack of something else

to do, nursing for me is a passion. My overall experience in the MHO would be so

exciting, interactive, informative, embarrassing, frightening and a little bit confusing.

Despite the practice sessions during the training, I am most likely to be confused,

excited and eager to learn and interact with the MHO staff and patients as well.

Just like other professionals, nurses have their own roles and responsibilities.

With the quality training that I obtained in immersion, I believe I will be one of the

best nurses in the world. With a full package of skills, rules and responsibilities, I am

certain that my whole duration of working in the MHO will be successful. First, I

will start by ensuring that I arrive at the work place earlier than everybody else. As a

new trained student, I will guarantee that I am in the right attire and arrived with all

the equipment needed in the MHO. Upon arrival in the MHO, it is normal to report to

the relevant authorities for orientation and assignment of roles. Stepping into the

MHO will be a great experience for that will be the beginning of my journey in the

nursing field. The first thing that the day would probably be rush is going to the

admission area to find out how patients are doing, whether they have taken their vital

signs and has been interviewed by the MHO staff. This is because that is one of the

roles of a trained nurse in the health center. MHO staffs are responsible for the

welfare of the patients, for instance, asking whether their checkup has been done or

whether they have been served.

As a rule, all immersants at the MHO are required to be dressed in the right

uniform. Therefore, that is one of the issues I will put into consideration as to

determine whether I am a qualified medical professional or not. In attempt to prove

that I’m a qualified part of their team, I’m willing to do my best to ensure that I

provide extraordinary care to the patients well. Taking the doctor’s and other health

provider’s instructions is another responsibility of a trainee, hence; I will have to

work hand in hand with the people above me so that I perform my duties

satisfactorily. Another thing that is likely to happen in the MHO is meeting new

people with different personalities. This might be tricky experience since some

people fail to cooperate whenever they are being handled by strangers. To avoid

freaking out, I was forced to introduce myself to the staff and the patients in order to

gain their confidence because first impression is very important in every

organization, it will be very vital to obtain a great impression at the MHO so as to

ease my work there. Nonetheless, it is possible that my daylight hours are likely to be

very confusing because of the new environment, people and work. To begin with,

getting used to the new environment is cumbersome for I will be able to learn a lot of

things. It is hard to find one’s way in a new place, particularly in the MHO. I am

definitely worried because there is a possibility of getting into the wrong information

due to unfamiliarity of the place.

My experience in the MHO is also very informative. This is because I will

certainly meet different nurses, MHO staffs and patients. Since the staffs already had

years of experienced, it will be a great opportunity to learn a lot of things in medical

field. For instance, working with the experienced nurses will be of beneficial since

they will train me a lot. It will be a chance for me to learn how to handle different

types of patients in the MHO. Moreover, it will be a golden opportunity to learn how

to use the MHO equipment and facilities. Working together with the MHO staff will

be an informative experience that I will be able to enjoy my work in the health office.

In connection to that, I also get to know many types of health conditions and their

medication. Working in the medical world also helps me as a part of the team to learn

about different personalities and how to manage and cope up with them.

Every new experience is a source of learning. For example, checking and

recording the patients’ progress is a new and highly informative experience for an

immersant. It will also be resourceful to attend to a variety of casualties and observe

how doctors and other nurses attend them. Consequently, such situations will give

me a chance to put my acquired skills into practice. What is more, my experience in

the MHO will help me observe how the health center operate, hence preparing me for

the job ahead. Besides, my entire experience in the MHO as a student trainee is very

interactive. I met a wide range of people across different political, religious and

cultural lines. Since MHO staff and the patients are different communities, they have

different beliefs, opinions, views and ideas about life. The fact that I will be taking

care of them will allow me to interact and hear their views on many aspects of life. It

will be very interesting to cooperate with the other staff members and see how they

handle their patients, and views on the different health conditions.

My generally experience at the MHO makes me realize that in pursuing this

education, my purpose is to help patient achieve their well being and achieving their

maximum potential for health is an interesting state of being. It is of great value in

our society for its ability to help accomplish great things, to help humans perform at

their best, and to on the whole make everyone feel good. It was once said by an

Arabian Proverb that “he who has health, has hope. And he, who has hope, has

everything”. This is entirely true; health provides humans with the greatest

opportunities to succeed and flourish in their ever changing world. Developing the

health care society serve as a deep challenge to study further and gain enough
