Peruvian warriors ‘The time is the middle of the 16th contury in Poru. ‘THE PLOT PROLOGUE: Tho Prisoner ‘A vast plain on the banks of the river Rimac It is sunrise and Alvaro, the Spanish governor of Peru has boon captured by a group of Incas" led by Otumbo. Alvaro is tied to a tree and the Incas dance fiercely around him threatening to kill him, His lifa is saved by the intervention of Zamoro, the chiaf of the tribe, who arrives bby canoe just in time. Freeing Alvaro, Zamoro tells him to return to his own poople and to toll thom that his life has boon saved by what the Spaniards call « savage. Alvaro departs, escorted back to civilization by members of tho tribe. Otumbo now tolls Zamoro thet Alzira, his betrothed, and her father, Ataliba are prisoners of the Spaniards. Zamoro calls on the tribo to follow him in battle and roscue them. ACT E: A Life For A Life Scene One A public square in Lima Alvaro is ceremoniously resigning as Governor of Peru, He presents his son Gusmano to the crowd as his successor and Gusmeno's first ect is to declare peace with the Incas. He then states that, although as a warrior, he has conquered in many battles, he cannot conquer the foolings of his heart: He loves Alzira, a Peruvien girl, end esks her father, Ataliba, as a sign of friendship between the two races, to give hor to him in marriage, * The librettist and Volt thom as American. iw called these people "Americans’, Cammarano in his libretto refors to 74 ‘Scone Two Inside Ataliba's apartment in the Governor's palace ‘We now meet Alzira and her young sister Zuma, Alzira awakens after having dreamed of Zamoro, whom she believes has been killed in battle. Her father, Ataliba, enters to inform her ‘that he has just promised her in marriage to Gusmano. Sho is highly upset and refuses, but her father is adamant and leaves. Alzira has just swom that she would be faithful to the memory of Zamoro, when suddenly, Zamoro appears, quite alive. Their joyous reunion is interrupted by the entrance of Gusmano. Zamoro and Gusmano recognize each other: Gusmano is ‘Zamoro's most hated enemy against whom he has sworn vengeance, Summoning his guards, Gusmeno has Zamoro taken prisoner, despite the fact that, in so doing, he is violating the peace to between Spaniard and Inca. Alvaro now enters and recognizes Zamoro as the young chieftain who had spared his life. He knesls before his son Gusmano and begs for Zamoro's life, But itis only when Gusmano hears nows that the Incas have crossed the river Rimac and 1g on Lima that he orders Zamoro to be freed, vowing that they shel] meet in battle. ACT I The Revengo of a Savage ‘Scone One Inside the fortifications of Lima ‘Tho Spaniards are celebrating their victory over the Incas. Prisoners are brought in, among them Zamoro, who is sentenced to bo burned et tho stako at dawn. Alzira pleads with Gusmano, who tells her that Zamoro's fate is in her hands. If Alzira marries him, he will give Zamoro his freedom. Overcoming her horror at the odious bargain, Alzira agrees. Scane Two ‘A cave in the countryside near Lima Zamoro and his followers are sheltering in a cave. Zamoro is told of Alzira's imminent marriage to Gusmano, and cursing her for being unfaithful to him, he swears vengeance and retums immodiatoly to Lime, ‘Scone Three A hall in the Governor's palaco ‘Tho wedding ceremony between Alzira and Gusmano is being held, As Gusmano is about to take Alzira's hand in marriago, ho is stabbed in tho chest by the disguised Zamoro, who then allows himself to be taken prisoner. The dying Gusmano unexpectedly repays Zemoro's magnenimity towards his fethor Alvaro by pardoning Zemoro end returning Alzira to him.
