She has beon chosen to be Don Carlos’ bride in an arranged political marriage. He awaits her in the forest of Fontainebleau. A hunt is {n progress and Elisabeth, having lost her way in the forest, suddenly appears with her page Thibault. She is escorted by a coterie of huntsmen. While she gives alms to a group of woodcutters, Carlos ‘watches his bride-to-be from behind a trve. When their eyes finally meet, they become enraptured with ach other, especially after Carlos reveals himself as the heir to the Spanish throne. Their bliss is interrupted by the news brought by Count Lerma, that Elisabeth is to marry, not Carlos, as believed, but his father, Phillip Il, King of Spain. ‘The two young lovers are understandably distraught. Elisabeth agrees to the arrangement for the sake of preserving the peace, and Carlos is left to bemoan his fato. "Ye is known fact that th historical Caos was an ungtnly, hunchbacked man, epileptic, addicted to practically every ‘vice and aberration. He was also slightly insane, a condition inherited from his mother Juana La Loca (Juana the Mad), ‘Schill’ hero bears no rsemblanco to tho historical Carls! | i ACT IL ‘Tho Monastery of San Yuste* It is dawn and a Monk is praying at the tomb of Charles V (grandfather of Carlos). Carlos appears, despondent and forlom, trembling at the voice of the Monk, who he thinks at first to be the voice of the ghost of his grandfather, Charles V. Rodrigue, the Marquis of Posa enters, and tries to convince his friend to champion the cause of freedom for Flanders, then an oppressed colony under the tyrannical ‘yoke of the Spanish Crown. He notices Carlos’ despondency and exprossos shock when Carlos confesses to him that he is hopelessly in love with with his step-mother. Rodrigue's efforts to dissuade Carlos fall on deaf ears, especially when, a moment later, Elisabeth passes through the monastery hall on the arm of his fathor and rival Phillip Il. Rodrigue and Carlos swear eternal friendship to each other. ‘A Gardon Outside the Monastery In the garden the ladies in waiting are expecting their Queen. Princess Eboli entertains the assembled with a Moorish song. When Elisabeth finally arrives, Rodrigue is announced and while giving her a note from her mother, also manages to slip her a note from Carlos. She reads the note while Rodrigue promenades with Eboli and discusses the latest doings in Paris. Elisabeth is then told by Rodrigue that Carlos desperately wishes her to intercede on his behalf in obtaining an audience with his own father. Elisabeth manages to inform Rodrigue that she will see her step-son, and the ladies retire. Carlos enters and formally grects his step-mother, asking her to use her influence to have the King send him to Flanders. He cannot contain himself much longer, and the formality disappears as he ardently confessos his love and reproaches her for her seeming aloofness and indifference. She coldly replies that itis her duty to her King and husband, despite the fact that she is in love with Carlos. Carlos soon falls senseless at her feet (the only allusion to the epileptic fits that plagued the historical Carlos). For a moment Elisabeth thinks he is dying but he revives and in his delirium once again professes his love for her. As ho tries to embrace her, she tears herself away, asking him whether he wishes to murder his own father and then lead her to the altar. With a cry of despair Carlos rushos from her presence, while Elisabeth asks heaven for strength in her predicament. King Philip enters, and outraged at finding his Queen unattended, dismisses the Countess D’Aremberg, a friend of Elisabeth who is responsible for keoping her company at all times. A dialogue between Rodrigue and the King follows in which the former expresses his indignation at the conditions in Flanders under the oppressive Spanish rule. ‘The King is impressed by the proud young man's candor and takes him into his confidence, revealing his thoughts about his loveless marriage and his suspicions concerning his son Carlos. He opens his heart to the man who openly opposes the repressive policies of the Spanish Crown with regard to Flanders, but he also wars Rodrigue to beware of the Grand Inquisitor. ACT IIL ‘Tho Gardons of the Quoon It is midnight, Having received an anonymous lottor urging him to come to the Queen's gardens, Carlos believes the veiled woman waiting for him is Elisabeth. Itis Eboli, however, who is secretly in love with Carlos and mistakenly believes that the recent agitation of Carlos is due to an undeclared passion for her. ‘When she notices the latter's disappointment she realizes Carlos’true feelings and her love turns to hate. Always watchful of his friend, Rodrigue appears and tries to dissuade the furious Eboli from doing something rash. The latter is not casily mollified and leaves in a rage. Rodrigue now asks Carlos to hand over any papers that may prove to be of an incriminating nature, in case Eboli carries out her threats. ‘The scene ends with the friendship theme resounding in the orchestra, *rhis monastery, in Chceres, was founded in 1402 and comprises, besides the church and the two cloister, the palace where Charles V spent the last 18 months of his life (1557-1558). 483 In a Square in Madrid, at tho church of Nuestra Soiiora de Atocha ‘An Auto-darfé* is boing propared. ‘The King and Quoon are ushored in and Phillip repeats the oath that he took when he was first crowned: to punish and persecute all enemies of the Faith. Carlos appears, heading a delegation from Flanders begging for relief from thoir harsh treatment. The King is outraged at seeing his own son leading a group of rebels. Carlos draws his sword, and when Phillip demands that Carlos be disarmed, it is Rodrigue who comes forth and gently takes his sword from him. ‘The flames from the pyres can be seen in the background, as the auto-da-fé accomplishes its grim mission, while a colestial voice is heard welcoming the souls of the condemned into paradise. ACTIV King Philip's room. Phillip is alono in his room. It is almost dawn and he muses about his loveless marriage and his suspicions about his son. The Grand Inquisitor is announced and the blind nonagonarian priest is led in and asks what the King wishes from him. Phillip describes how Carlos has taken up the side of Flanders and reveals to the Inquisitor that he plans to have his son killed. If he indeed employs such extreme measures, will the Church absolve him? The old man replies that God himself did not hesitate to give up His Son so that the world might be saved. The King's matter having been settled, it is now the Inquisitor’s tun to speak. ‘The fault of Carlos is nothing compared to what Rodrigue, Grandoo of Spain has porpotratod, ho states, and he asks the King to hand over Posa to the Inquisition for punishment, The King refuses and the Inquisitor leaves the room in a fury, as Phillip comments sadly that the crown must always yield to the altar. Blisabeth rushes in and bemoans the fact that her jewelry casket has beon stolen. ‘To her amazement she sees it on Phillip's desk. He compels his wifo to open the casket which reveals a picture of Carlos. Sooing his suspicions of adultery confirmed, Phillip harshly admonishes his wife. Elisabeth faints and Fholi and Rodrigue come to her aid. Eboli admits that it was she, out of rovengo, who put Carlos's picture in the casket admitting also that she had been Phillip’s mistress all the while. Elisabeth gives Eboli two choices as punishment: exile or life in a convent. A prison where Carlos is held prisoner * Rodrigue visits his friend in prison to tell him of his imminent release. In an act of great abnegation Rodrigue, using the papers Carlos had given him, manages to tum the suspicion onto himself. While he is arranging for Carlos’ releasa he is shot in the back by the henchmen of the Inquisition. With his last breath, Rodrigue invokes his friend for a free and just Spain. Phillip, coming to free his son from prison hears with dismay about Posa's murder. A crowd of rebels, Eboli among them, appears at the prison in an effort to free Carlos, but the suddon appoarance of the Inquisitor foils their attempt. ACT V Tho cl stors of the monastory of San Yusto Itis night and Elizabeth is waiting for hor stop-son to bid him farewell, and, as the murdered Rodrigue ‘would have wished it, to take up the cause of Flanders and its eventual liberation from Spanish oppression. Carlos and Elisabeth recall their first meeting in Fontainebleau, but Carlos soon turns his attention to his now task in the politics of state. Phillip suddenly appears out of hiding, ssizes Elisabeth and demands that the Grand Inquisitor, who has come with him, hand over Carlos to the Inquisition, but a monk emerges from the cloister. They are all stunned with terror as the monk drags Catlos with him into the recesses of the holy sanctuary. As the monk speaks, the assembled hear in him the voice of Charles V himself. *Auto-daé is act of faith, the Portuguese name for the common spectacles caried out by the feared Spanish Inquisition where socalled "heretics" who did not conform to Catholic dogma wor ether foribly converted to Catholicism or burned at iy amid great fanfare witnesed by the populac the sta, 484 Don Carlos, Act 1 ACT I ‘Tho forest at Fontainebleau, in France (it is winter.
