Glovanna d'aRco 565 GIOVANNA D'ARCO Opera in a prologue and three acts. Libretto by Temistocle Solera after Schiller's Die Jungfrau von Orleans First performed at La Scala, Milan, February 15, 1845 CHARACTERS Charles VII (Carlo), King of France: tenor Giacomo, a shepherd: baritone Joan of Arc (Giovanna), his daughter: soprano Dalil, one of the King’s officers: tenor Talbot, the English Commander: bass Officers of the King, Villagers, Townspeople, French and English Soldiers and Nobles. Tho timo is 1429 and the place is France. PROLOGUE At Dom-Rémy, villagers and a group of the King’s officers wait to hear the King's plans to ley down his arms and surrender to the invading British forces. He talks of a vision he has had in which he received a commend from the Virgin to lay down his arms at the foot of a great oak tree. The villagers say that such an oak can be found in a nearby forest, and when Carlo (the King) says that he will find peace there in abdication, they warn him that the site is haunted by witches and warlocks, a place of death and horror. ‘The scene changes to the forest with a shrine in the background and an ok in the foreground. Giacomo, Joan's father is fervently praying that his daughter not be possessed by the devil. He watches as she kneels before the shrine and then sadly bemoans the fate of France. Joan asks whether it may not be she, the elected one to save her country. King Carlo appears, prepared to lay down his arms at the foot of the osk, as commanded in his vision. Demons tempt the sleeping Joan with sensuel visions, while sedate angelic choruses urge her to don helmet and sword and fight to save France. These voices are heard by Joan only, and she cries that she is ready. Carlo overhears this and is infused by her courage to fight for her country. They join their voices in great resolve, while Giacomo berates Joan, sorrowfully convinced that out of a guilty love for her King, she has sold her soul to the devil. ACTI Near Rheims ‘Thanks to Giovanne's (Joan's) leadership of the French forces, the war has taken a bad turn for the English. Giacomo, Giovanne's father, visits Talbot, the English commander and offers to join his forces. He promises to deliver his daughter into the hands of the English, believing France now to be ruled by evil spirits and the powers of hell. 566 At the court in Rheims preparations are being readied for the coronation of King Carlo VII. Giovanna longs to return to her simple life, now that her task has been accomplished. The King expresses his love for her, telling her he hes loved her ever since he first saw her. In a moment of weakness she confesses that she too returns his love, but she immediately hears the "voices", both angelic and infernal, which keep her in perennial turmoil and anxiety, warning her against earthly love. Carlo, not hearing the voices, cannot understand her distress and when Delil enters to announce to Carlo that the preparations are ready for the coronation, Carlo persuades Giovanna to accompany him to the cathedral. The demon voices keep assaulting Giovanna, who realizes then she has betrayed her sacred purpose. ACT IL ‘The Cathedral Square of St. Denis in Rheims The people proclaim the victory of "Tho Maid of Orléans" and soldiers precede the King in procession into the cathedral. Giacomo is still determined to bring the downfall of his own daughter, and when in great agitation she comes out of the cathedral followed by Carlo, Giacomo accuses the King of blasphemy and his daughter of witchcraft. Carlo will not listen, but the credulous populace is immediately swayed. When Giovanna refuses to defend herself against the accusations hurled at her by her father, she is denounced by the people, who want to hand her over to the English. ACT OL An English Fortress Near the Battlefield Held by the English, Giovanna awaits death at the stake. Giacomo, observing Giovanna’s daydreaming now starts to wonder whether he may have been wrong about her. He is soon convinced of her redemption, and freeing her from her bonds, sees her rush off into battle. He describes the battle and sees his daughter turn French defeat into victory. Carlo rushes in proclaiming Giovanna his savior and Giacomo begs for punishment first and then for forgiveness. The King pardons him and asks Giacomo to give him news of the battle. The enemy has been routed, but Giovanna is dead. Her funeral procession is interrupted, as she radiantly revives to see the heavens opening and the Virgin herself beckoning to her. Ecstatically Giovanna bids farewell to earth and with the French flag clutched in her hand, she dies.
