253 SIEGFRIED Music drama in three acts. Music by Richard Wagner with libretto by the composer First performed at Bayreuth, August 16, 1876 (CHARACTERS Wotan (disguised as "The Wanderer"): bass-baritone Siegfried, son of Siegmund and Sieglinde (grandson of Wotan): tenor Briinnhilde, formerly a Valkyrie, now a mortal: soprano Erda, the earth-goddess: contralto Alberich, a Nibelung: bass-baritone ‘Mime: a dwarf, his brother: tenor Fafner, a giant transformed into a dragon: bass A Forest Bird: soprano The time is mythological and the location is somewhere in Germany near the Rhine River. THE PLOT ‘Some twenty years have passed since the end of Die Walktire. Sieglinde, having fled to Mime's lair, near the dragon's cave, gave birth to Siegfried, her son by her brother Sieemund. She died in childbirth. She had taken the fragments of Siegmund’s shattered sword (Nothung) with her and given them to the smithy Mime for safekeeping. Siegfried, reared by ‘Mime, has now grown up to be a strong, handsome and fearless young man, ACTI In a forest clearing alongside the cave he inhabits, we find the dwarf Mime halfheartedly at ‘work trying to forge a sword for Siegfried. We lear Mime's motives in taking such great trouble to rear the young child. The fearless youngster, he believes, will kill the dragon Fafiner and thus win back the coveted ring for his foster father. However, Mime’s efforts to forge a sword from the fragments of Nothung left to him by the dying Sieglinde are useless, sand whenever he forges a new sword Siegfried smashes it to bits as if it were a toy. At this point Siegfried yodels onto the scene, leading a bear by a leash, which he has brought simply to frighten the dwarf. He insults Mime, wondering why he ever comes home, when the animals in the forest are so much better company than this misshapen fellow. Mime ‘whines and complains of the shabby reward he gets for having brought up Siegfried, serving as both father and mother. Siegfried remains totally untouched by these complaints, which he has doubtlessly heard often, and finally manages to elicit from Mime what litle he knows of his mother, that is, her name and the circumstances of his birth. Mime has always been ‘very vague on the subject, and he won't tell Siegfried who his father was, but he does tell hhim of the broken sword that Sieglinde had left behind. Demanding forcefully that Mime forge him a new sword, Siegfried runs off once again into the forest. With Siegfried gone, Mime now has a second visitor: a tall, distinguished, one-eyed gentleman with a staff, wearing a floppy hat, boasting of his great wisdom and calling himself "Wanderer". Mime is not in the mood for company and unceremoniously asks the stranger to leave. Quite unperturbed, the Wanderer scats himself by the fire and offers to demonstrate his wisdom by answering any three questions put to him. His head shall be the forfeit if he fails. Mime, who has been boasting of his own native intelligence, cannot resist254 the offer and comes up with three questions in a category on which (as he soon finds out) this "Wanderer" is an expert. The questions are, who inhabits the deepest caverns, who dwells "on the back of the earth” and who lives in the cloudy heights? The Wanderer provides the answers, which are, respectively, the Nibelungs, the giants and the gods. ‘Admitting that the answers are quite correct, Mime again invites his unwelcome guest to leave, but Wanderer/Wotan now insists that he too now has the right to ask three questions, and his are much harder. The first two are answered without much difficulty, the correct answers being "the Walsungs" and "Nothung". In giving these answers with added detail, Mime shows that he knows a great deal more about family history than he has yet revealed to Siegfried. But the third question (an unfair one, as it deals with the future), totally stumps ‘the dwarf. It is: who is going to put the pieces of Nothung together again? And when Mime, in great fright, admits he does not know, Wotan tells him that it will be someone who has never experienced fear. However, he does not demand Mime's head: let that be taken, also, by one who knows no fear. And with this final utterance the Wanderer goes off. Left alone, Mime is overcome by fright. He imagines he hears the bellowing of the dragon and fearfully hides behind the anvil. When Siegfried returns, demanding his sword, he cannot at first find the dwarf, Finally the little gnome comes out, tells him that Nothung can be fashioned only by one who has never experienced fear and asks Siegfried whether he knows anything about that emotion. Siegfried does not (Mime blaming himself for not ever having "taught" it to him), and demands instruction. But no matter how vividly Mime describes the frightening sounds of the forest at night and the reactions they produce in himself, the guileless Siegfried cannot make sense of it. Maybe, suggests Mime, Siegfried ‘could Jeam fear by visiting the cave of the fearful dragon who dwells not very far away. Siegfried, ever eager for instruction, begs to be led there, but first he must have his sword. ‘And, as Mime clearly cannot fashion it himself, Siegfried takes up the pieces and begins to ‘work at the forge. Mime, sitting by, offers his professional counsel, but Siegfried, apparently inspired, goes about it eagerly in his own way. Meantime, the dwarf muses, if Siegfried makes the sword and kills Fafner, he himself will bring him a drink with a sleeping potion in it, ill the youngster and then make himself the master of the ring and the owner of the hoard of gold on which Fafner is now sitting. As Siegfried lustily sings his "forging song", he finally plunges the red-hot sword into the water trough and exultingly holds it aloft. Wi mighty blow he splits the anvil in two, as Mime falls terrified to the ground. ACTIL Deep in the woods, Alberich sits in the dark outside Fafner's cave, awaiting the day which shall see the dragon slain. No love is lost between him and Wotan, who comes by and exchanges a couple of unpleasant speeches with the dwarf, Wotan tells him of the hero who is coming to fight the dragon, a youngster who knows nothing about the gods or about the ring, and who is acting wholly without guidance. Together, Wotan and Alberich waken the dragon and Alberich suggests that a fight with a well-armed enemy can be avoided if only Fafner give up the ring. Fafner’s answer is a booming, sleepy Lasst mich schlafen! (let me sleep!). With a laugh and a suggestion that Alberich keep an eye on his brother Mime, ‘Wotan disappears into the forest. With Alberich once more in his hiding place, dawn begins to break, and presently Siegfried and Mime arrive on the scene. "This is the place”, says Mime, and Siegfried hopes now to learn about fear. Mime describes the terrors of the dragon graphically enough, including the fierce, snapping jaws, the poison that drips from his mouth, the powerful tail that can snap a man's bones as if they were made of glass. But Siegfried only wants to know if the beast has a heart which may be pierced by Nothung. He then curtly drives his foster father away.235 Waiting for the dragon to come out for his mid-day drink, Siegfried lies down under the trees, and the episode known to concert-goers as "Siegftied Forest Murmurs” (Waldwe ben) ensues. Siegfried wonders about his mother; he listens to the songs of the birds; he tries to converse with them by first trying to blow through a reed, then on his horn; but he cannot understand what the birdcalls seem to be telling him. His homemade music, however, ‘manages to awaken the dragon, who lumbers forth to see what is disturbing his sleep. Siegfried, not the least disturbed by the dragon's fearful features or by his booming bellowing basso, asks to be instructed about fear. Annoyed by the youngster’s brashness, the dragon attacks him. Siegftied wounds him in his tail and, when the monster rears up in ‘wrath, stabs him through the heart. With a final waming to beware of whoever it was who put him up to this murder, Fafner shudders and expires. But as Siegfried draws out his sword 4 drop of the dragon's blood falls on his finger; he puts it in his mouth to lick it off and, miracle of miracles, he can now understand bird-alk! The voice of one bird (an off-stage soprano) tells him about the hoard of gold, about the Tarnhelm and about the omnipotent ring. ‘Thanking his feathered friend, Siegfried enters the cave. ‘The disappearance of Siegfried is the signal for the two Nibelung brothers, Alberich and ‘Mime, to steal in from their respective watching posts. Neither is pleased to sce the other, and they engage in a snarling contest of wits. Alberich, the stronger of the two, gets the ‘upper hand, denying Mime even the Tamhelm from all the hoard, which Alberich fully expects to get for himself. But when Siegfried emerges from the cave, they notice that Siegfried has both the Tamhelm and the ring, having taken them on the advice of the bird, and passed over the rest of the hoard of gold. The Nibelungs slink off in different directions, ‘and when Siegfried puts the ring on his finger and puts the Tarmhelm on his belt, he hears the bird offering further advice: "Don't trust Mime", is what he hears, and he is also told that by the power of the dragon's blood he has drunk, he will be able to understand the real meaning of Mime’s words, no matter what he appears to be saying. ‘Thus it is that when Mime speaks to Siegfried again and tries to wheedle him into trusting him, the words that come out of his mouth reveal his real intent. He hates Siegfried and his whole race, and he plans to murder him with his own sword as soon as he manages to put him to steep with a sleeping draught. And when he actually offers him the drugged drink, Siegfried, in utter disgust, kills him with one swift blow of his sword. He wastes no sentiment on the death of his foster father, but throws the body into the cave and then drags the body of the dragon over it to guard it. From his hiding place, Alberich emits a peal of hoarse laughter at the sight of his brothers death. ‘Once more, our young hero lies down under the foliage and meditates on how alone he is in the world. Once more the Forest Bird cheers him up: "Hi, Siegfried”, it calls, and proceeds to tell him about the glorious bride that awaits him, asleep and surrounded by fire. Her name is Briinnhilde, and she will belong to one who can go through the fire and who knows no fear. Laughing delightedly, Siegfried cries "I am the stupid boy who doesn't know how to be afraid”, and he asks the bird to show him the way. By flying overhead, the bird complies, as the act comes to an end. ACT II Scene One It is a wild night at the foot of a mountain, as Wotan calls upon Erda, the earth-goddess and the mother of the Valkyries. He wants her, in her all-knowing wisdom, to help him once again. She scems irritated at having been disturbed from her long slumber. He tells her what is troubling him but she is not much help. First she advises him to go to the Noms, the ‘weavers of fate, and when he tells her that they can not advise him, she suggests that he7. GT eS dae “7 256 consult Brinnhilde. Only then docs she Jeam what has happened to her daughter, She | thoroughly disapproves of the whole business and only wants to go back to sleep. But : before she goes, Wotan tells her that he is now completely resigned to the destruction of the gods, and that his power shall be inherited by young Siegfried, who is full of the joy of love, who knows no malice, and who shall awaken the slumbering Briinnhilde. And when | Briinnhilde awakes, she shall perform a great deed for redeeming the world. Erda returns to her underground slumber, the scene turns brighter, and a few moments later Siegtried is led in by the bird, who flies off atthe sight of Wotan. Siegfried of course does not recognize his grandfather and demands to know the way to the sleeping maiden. The old man answers him with a great many references to things the boy docsnt really understand, bbut at the end he makes it clear that it was he who had put the girl to sleep, whereupon | Siegfried immediately assumes that Wotan is an enemy of the family. Therefore, when i Wotan raises his spear to bar the boy's approach to the mountain and Briinnhilde, Siegfried impatiently shatters it with his sword Nothung. This indicates to Wotan in no uncertain terms | that his foreboding about the destruction of the gods is indeed true, and that a new order is about to take place. As Wotan disappears, the stage is enveloped in flames, as Siegfried, lustily blowing on his hom and crying "hoho!", bounds up the mountain to meet his intended bride, Scene Two | / | We are now on the mountaintop where Brinnhilde is lying asleep surrounded by fire. Siegfried first sees the girl's horse and a moment later the maiden herself. As she is clothed in armor, her visor over her face, he takes her to be a man, and even when he lifts her helmet. and her bright yellow hair falls out, he is still not sure what she is, uttering the unforgettable ; ‘words (which always bring a titter from the audience) das ist kein Mann, "this is not a man. Let us not forget that Siegfried has never seen a female in his life, so his ingenuous utterance ! can be excused. However, a completely new emotion seizes him now; he calls upon his i ‘mother for help; he imagines that for the first time in his life he is experiencing fear. But he does know, now, that it is a woman he sees, and his instinct prompts him to implant a long [ and ardent kiss on her lips. This finally awakens Brinnhilde from a sleep that had begun before Siegfried was born. Her | first reaction is one of joy at seeing the sun. It is not long, however, before she knows who Siegfried must be. She greets him by name and tells him how she had known about him and | loved him even before his birth, and in the long duet that ends the act, many emotions are experienced by the two smitten lovers. Siegfried's are understandably uncomplicated: he is ! proud of his accomplishment and longs to embrace Briinnhilde; hers are somewhat more i complex, as she realizes that she now is no longer a goddess but a simple mortal woman never before touched by a god and now about to be touched by her rescuer, a mortal man or at best a demigod. At the same time she is deeply attracted to her nephew, though at the } ‘moment that fact doesn't seem to bother either of them. The opera ends as their voices join in ‘passionate acceptance of their love and their fate.Siegfried, Act 1 257 ACT (A cave in a forest.
