Libretto by Temistocle Solere, based on Zaccharias Werner's play Attila, Konig der Hunnen First performed in Venice on March 17, 1848 (CHARACTERS Attila, King of the Huns: bess Uldino, a Broton slave of Altil's: tonor (Odabolla, daughter of the Lord of Aquila, in love with Foresto: soprano Ezio, a Roman general: baritons Foresto, « knight of Aquileia, in love with Odabella: tenor ‘Leone, (Pope Leo I): bass Huns, Leaders, Thuringians, Ostrogoths, kings end soldiers, Druids, priestesses, men and ‘women of Aquileia, Roman soldiers and offcils, hermits, slaves and Roman children is tho middle ofthe Fifth century. The prologue takes place in Aquileia and the ‘other acts near Rome. ‘The tim ‘THE PLOT PROLOGUE \ ‘Scone One A piazza in Aquiloia Atil's army of Huns and Ostrogoths has sacked the city and is celebrating victory with invocations to the god Woden and praise for Atle, their gnoral, who presently appears among his soldiers and takes his seat upon a throne. Ho is angered by the fact that Uldino, his slave, hhas contrived to save the lives of some of the women of Aquila, lod by Odabella, daughter of the Lord of Aquileia, who perished at the hands of Attila. She praises the courage of Italian ‘women and impressed, Attila offers her whatover she most desires. Whon sho asks him to return her sword to her, he compliss, whereupon sho swoars thet she will use it to ill Attila fand avenge her father's murder. Ezio, the emissary of the Roman emperor is announced. Ezio ‘Proposes a sacret pact by which he and Attila would divide Italy betwoon them. The Eastern Tuler, he points out, is old and feeble, and the Roman ruler a more boy. Why should they not ‘agree to share the spoils? Attila rejects Ezio's offer, calls him a traitor and prepares to march ‘on Rome. ‘Aquileia was prosperous ity-port on the Adbiatic coast. ACT Scone One ‘A wood near Atl camp It is @ moonlit night and Odabella woeps for her father and for her lover Foresto, whom she Delioves to be dond. Foresto arrives in disguise and Odabell's joy is cut short as he accuses bor of teachery end infidelity, Reminding him of the story of Judith and Holofernes, in which Judith saved Israel, Odabella finally convinces Foresto that she is nota traitrss, and explains hor plan to murder Attila. Scene Two Alias tont “Attila lias in restless sleep. His slave Uldino wakens him and Attila tells of his droam, in ‘hich en old man appoared to him at the gates of Rome and prophesied disaster for him unloss hho turned back. Now completely awake, Attila is ashamed of his fear and calls on his soldiers ‘and Druids to assemble for an all-out attack on Romo. Thoy sing a hymn in praise of Wodan, ‘ut from the distance, the sound of much quioter singing is heard. Attila recognises him Efthe old man in his dream, and when the old man repeats the same words of Attile's dream, the lator fells down in teror. act Scene One Ezios camp outside Rome io is reading a dispatch from the Emperor Valentine II, ordering him to return to Romo, as f treaty has boon signed between the Huns and the Romans. Ezio objects to being so tersely Srdered by Valentine, « mere boy, and reflects on the bittar contrast between Rome's present ocedonce and its former glorious days. A group of slaves arrives bearing an invitation from ‘Atila to a benquet. One of them remains behind: It is Forest, still in disguise. Ho and Ezio plot together to bring about Attila's downfall. 11 Scene Two A banquet at Attil's camp Altila's slave, Uldino, has been bribed by Foresto to poison Attila. Odabella, determined that Altila shall dio by no one else's hand but her own prevents Attila from drinking the poisoned ‘wine offered by Uldino. Foresto now throws off his disguise and announces thet it was he who hhad attempted to poison Attila. Odabella ploads for Foresto's life and Attila, grataful to her for hhaving saved his lif, announces that he will marry her. He places Foresto in her supervision and resumes his preparations for his attack on Rome act mr In a forest is morning and Uldino informs Foresto that plans are going forward for the wedding of Attila ‘and Odabella. Ezio enters and he and Foresto plot to ambush the Huns, while the sounds of ‘wodding festivities can be hoard in the distance. Odabolla enters and Foresto again accuses her of infidality. Sho trios to dissuade him from his bolif. Attila onters to claim his bride end finds Odabelle in the arms of Foresto and reproaches all threa in turn. As Romen soldiers ar hoard approaching, Attila realizes ho has boon botrayed, as Odabella stabs him with the sword ho had given her. “You too Odabella” ho axclaims with his last breath, recelling the words of ‘an oarlier and more famous conqueror in a similar situation.
