If coal consumption in a power plant is 3060 kg/day, what would be the SO2
emission rate (g/sec)? Coal contains 1% sulfur.
Q2. Typical coal burned in power plant has heat content 24 KJ/g and average
carbon content 62 percent, 130 gm of elemental sulphur per 106 KJ, 13 gm of
particulate emission per 106 KJ. Assume that plant requires 3 units of heat energy
to deliver 1 unit of electrical energy. What would be the emission of SO2,
Particulate and Carbon (in gm/kwhr)?
Q1. At a traffic corridor of Guwahati City, 4 types of vehicles
has been counted which crosses the road in 20 min. If the
road stretch is 600 m then calculate the CO emission from
traffic in g/sec. The emission factors and traffic counts are
given below:
Emission factor
Time Vehicle number
(g/km)
Two wheeler 850 1.48
Three wheeler 350 2.09
Passenger cars 450 1.30
Bus 350 3.97
Q2. In an air quality region, having length and width of 0.5 km and 0.3 km respectively, the
only source of air pollution is the vehicular traffic. The length of the area is perpendicular to
north and the only existing road in the area is aligned to 3150 to north. The table below shows
the traffic and meteorological conditions during observation:
a) Numbers of vehicles
Morning hours
10-11 am 5212 864 3065 227
11-12 pm 5434 964 3101 225
Evening hours
5-6 pm 5224 850 3064 254
6-7 pm 5434 963 2659 256
b) Emission details
c) Meteorology
Calculate the steady state CO concentrations in the area (grams/km3) and also, predict the
concentrations at 10 pm, 12 mid-night, and 2 am next day, assuming similar
meteorological conditions and no vehicles after 7 pm in the area. (Assume the background
concentrations as zero)
Q3. Consider the thermoelectric power plant of total capacity 915 MW with a load
factor (or annual capacity) of 72.5 percent and a plant efficiency of 40 percent.
Determine the amount of particulates, CO2 and SO2 if oil is the fuel source. Assume
80% of ash as particulates. The ultimate analysis and calorific value is as follows:
Height Temperature
Sea level, 0 m 27˚C
400 m 10 ˚C
647 m 17˚C
1200 m 4˚C
Q3. The ground-level wind velocity at 10 m elevation is 4
m/sec in a city. What would you estimate the velocity to be at
100 m elevation in slightly unstable atmosphere?
Q4. During a field monitoring program conducted in Guwahati,
the atmospheric lapse rate was constant up to 800 m. The
atmospheric temperature and pressure at ground level were
1020 mbar and 150C, respectively. A radio sound measurement
indicates the temperature and pressure at some elevation were
975 mbar and 11.50C, respectively. Assume hydrostatic
condition and determine:
(a) The elevation of the observation, and
(b) The atmospheric temperature gradient dT/dz in
Kelvin per meter
