Sample Teaching/Tutoring Activity

Lesson Plan: Banking Role Play

Course: Business English

Instructor: Sunchai Hamcumpai, English Department, Roi-Et Rajabhat University, Thailand

STEP 1: READY THE LEARNERS

Most of the learners are non-native English speakers. They are taking Business English class which one
lesson has covered language skill related to banking transaction. Teacher introduces them to the
banking transaction in local bank which is familiar to them, but this lesson will be pretend to be in
foreign country where English is the official language.

STEP 2: TARGET SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

1. Student will be able to perform the oral task in banking transaction with 85% accuracy

2. Student will be able to understand the process of banking with 85% accuracy.

STEP 3: PREPARE THE LESSON

The class will be divided into two groups: bank tellers and bank customers. The bank tellers sit in the
classroom and sit in the desk that pretended to be the bank counter. They will be supplied with activity
sheet and fake money. While another group who represent the bank customers have to stand outside
the class. Teacher explains them the errands they need to run at the bank: paying utilities bills, deposit,
withdraw, and exchange money. They are given identification cards, bank cards, and personal checks to
perform the role play.

When the bank tellers are ready, the customers walk into the classroom to do the transactions. Firstly,
they need to cash a check in one teller. They have to speak as the dialogue suggested in the worksheet.
Then they have to switch to another counter for the other transaction. Finally, when the first student
has done all the transaction, she/he will be the winner. All banks tellers and customers then take turn
the roles.

Download instructional media: activity sheet, bank card, photo ID, money, check, and utilities bills. Print
the original copy with laser printer. Photocopy the media to use for every student. Laminate the media

Prepare a worksheet to demonstrate how to speak when doing bank traction before playing the role
play. Administer the oral test after finishing the activity.

STEP 4: CHECK FOR SUCCESS

The teacher evaluates the lesson success by monitoring the oral performance while they are playing the
role play. After they finish the game, teacher will administer the quiz by having them do the dialogue
without the worksheet. In order to evaluate the knowledge of banking, teacher will have another
multiple choice test which covers vocabulary, conversation, and banking transaction.
