CLEANING PROCEDURES − SPOP−90

Task 70−21−00−280−007:

R 1. SPOP 90 − Cleaning And Heat Tint Inspection Of Coated Turbine

Parts

WARNING: REFER TO THE MANUFACTURER'S MATERIAL SAFETY DATA

SHEETS FOR CONSUMABLE MATERIAL'S INFORMATION SUCH
AS: HAZARDOUS INGREDIENTS, PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL
CHARACTERISTICS, FIRE, EXPLOSION, REACTIVITY, HEALTH
HAZARD DATA, PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING, USE AND
CONTROL MEASURES.

R NOTE: The specific turbine part coatings applicable to this

R procedure are: PWA 47, PWA 73, PWA 73/PWA 70, PWA 270,
R PWA 273, PWA 275, PWA 286, PWA 545, PWA 596, PWA 36095,
R PWA 36330, and PWA 36395.

R A. General

R (1) This procedure examines turbine parts for coating on

R specified areas or for sufficient removal of coating
R after stripping.

R (2) SPOP 90 does not give an indication of the thickness

R of a coating. Thus, Pratt & Whitney recommends that
R you apply a new coating to blades if you subsequently
R install them in an engine for a long period of time.

R (3) Heat tint inspection shows an indication of only a

R metallic coating.

R (4) Heat tint inspection does not show an indication of

R a thermal barrier (ceramic) coating. Use visual
R inspection to examine parts for ceramic coating.

R (5) In areas where the ceramic coating has damage, it is

R possible to use the heat tint inspection to do a check
R for the base metallic coating.

R (6) It is important to examine blast gun nozzles frequently

R for too much wear due to high pressure, and to replace
R them, when necessary, so that the cleaning process
R continues to be satisfactory.

R (7) The CN−34697 (PWA 31383) Color Photograph for Turbine

R Blade/Vane Inspection shows heat−tinted nickel alloy
R turbine blades and vanes with PWA 47, PWA 73, PWA
R 73/PWA 70, PWA 270, PWA 273, PWA 275, PWA 286, PWA 545,
R PWA 596, PWA 36095, PWA 36330, or PWA 36395 Coating.

R (8) Refer to 70−20−00, General−01 for additional

R requirements.

R B. Precautions

R (1) Touch parts only with clean white gloves during the
R procedure to prevent fingerprints on parts.

R (2) If specified by an Engine Manual repair, shotpeening of

R turbine parts (this includes blade roots) must occur
R when the heat tint temperature is greater than 1200°F
R (649°C). If shotpeening occurs at a lower temperature,
R the full effect of shotpeening decreases.

R D. Prerequisites

R (1) If necessary, remove grease or oil from parts

R with SPOP 209. Refer to 70−21−00, SPOP−209 (Task
R 70−21−00−110−041).

R (2) Make sure there is sufficient movement of air in the

R furnace to increase the heat tint oxide on the part
R surface.

R E. Cleaning Of Coated Turbine Parts

R (1) Clean coated or stripped parts before heat tint as

R follows:

CLEANING PROCEDURES − SPOP−90

R (a) Clean parts with SPOP 203. Refer to 70−21−00,

SPOP−203 (Task 70−21−00−110−007). For removal of
sulfidation, refer to the specified section of the
Engine Manual for repair to the part.

NOTE: Sulfidation can show as a raised

blister−like protrusion or as corrosion
pits.

NOTE: This step is not necessary if you cleaned

the parts before with SPOP 203 or if you
chemically stripped them before.

R (b) Dry abrasive grit blast with SPOP 10 or SPOP

218 to get a smooth matte surface and until
you fully remove all remaining characteristic
greenish−to−pale blue corrosion. Refer to
70−21−00, SPOP−10 (Task 70−21−00−120−010) or
R SPOP−218 (Task 70−21−00−120−004). Use an
operating otoscope (or equivalent) to do an
inspection of internal cavities and trailing edge
openings.

R CAUTION: OVERSIZE MEDIA CAN CAUSE COOLING AIR

HOLES TO BECOME CLOGGED.

R (c) Remove remaining abrasive material from the part

with a clean, dry air−blast free of oil.

R (d) Move parts directly to heat tint trays.

R F. Heat Tint Inspection For Metallic Coating

R (1) Procedure

R (a) Put the part in a circulating air furnace for

R the applicable amount of time and temperature
R specified below:

R NOTE: P & W recommends an electric air

R circulating furnace. If only a gas furnace
R is available, it is necessary to give parts
R protection from the combustion products of
R gas−fired burners.

R (b) Let the temperature of the parts decrease in air.

R NOTE: It is permitted to use a fan that blows air

R on the parts to decrease the temperature of
R the parts faster than when the air has no
R movement.

R (2) Visual Inspection For Coating

R (a) Visually examine the part for metallic coating.

R 1 A gold or pewter color shows that there is a

R coating on the surface of the part.

R EXCEPTION: For PWA 70, it is possible that

R areas with coating will be mottled
R (that is, will show spots or
R streaks) or will be brownish−blue
R because of the oxidation of the
R Cr−rich base metal.

R 2 A blue or purple color shows there is no

R coating on the surface of the part.

R (b) Compare the color tints with Color Photograph

R CN−34697 (PWA 31383) to do a check for any
R remaining hot corrosion products.

R 1 Blade or vane must be equivalent to Blade

R No. 1 of photograph. Refer to the detailed
R description for Blade No. 1 satisfactorily
R clean conditions.

R 2 If blade or vane is equivalent to Blade No.

2 or 3, there are remaining hot corrosion
products on the part. Do again the cleaning
procedure and the heat tint procedure. Refer
to the detailed description for Blade No. 2
or 3 that shows different amounts of heat
corrosion and coating loss.

R 3 It is very important that parts be within the

R specified blend limits when you try to remove
R hot corrosion products many times. It is
R necessary that you remove all products of hot
R corrosion and oxidation before you do more
R treatments.

R G. Interpretation of CN−34697 (PWA 31383) Color Photograph for

R Turbine Blade/Vane Inspection

R (1) Blade No. 1

R (a) Blade No. 1 is an example of a blade that is

R satisfactorily clean.

R (b) The dull dark blue (Arrows A) or purple color on

R the airfoil and root is typical of nickel−base
R alloys with no coating.

R (c) Many shades of gold color (Arrows B, C, and D) are

R typical of many thicknesses of coating, thinned by
R abrasive blast.

R (2) Blades No. 2 and 3

R (a) These blades show examples of different amounts of

R hot corrosion and coating.

R 1 Green (Arrows A) or gray (Arrows B) areas show

R examples of very bad corrosion.

R 2 Light blue (Arrows C) areas show corrosion that

R is bad but is less than areas that are green
R (Arrows A) or gray (Arrows B).
