We were assigned by our lecturer, Ir Normadyzah to perform a group ethics project which

is a community service project. The objective of this project basically to show us on how to
be a professional leaders and how we apply our leadership in the ethics project. We had a
meeting with all the classmates about the project and after having a long discussion with
many suggestions and opinions about what kind of project to be done, we have decided to
choose a project called “Semaian Kasih Bumiputera”. This project involved the original
people ”orang asli” which were the villagers at Kampung Simpai, Pekan, Pahang and the
school kids there. The main objective of the project is to develop the communication skills
among us as students of Leaderships for Professional Ethics for Engineers (CPE 680) with
the people there, to increase the confident level in speaking in front of them because of
different culture and to create the bonding between student and orang asli there.

First of all, we have create the organization which include of the higher department and
followed by the committee and we had choose a great leader among us which was Hasif as
the program director, Satiah as vice program director, Evelyn and Syakirah assigned as the
secretary, Anis and Azam as logistics department, Syawarina, Ali and Rafiqah as food
department, Azizah as sponsorship department, Syuhada and Raihan as safety department,
Affendy and Hakim as special task department, Nizam and Hamidi as multimedia department
and the last for the programs department we have Shamimi, Shazwani, Izzaty, Amelina, Afif,
Raja Arif and Nik Syahmi. In order to create this kind of organization, it is not something as
easy as abc. It is quite hard for all of us in deciding who will be in what position. Here, we
managed to overcome this problem by doing a discussion involving all of our class members.
By doing this discussion, we were able to assign every one in our class to be in certain
position as stated above. So here we know that, in order to build an important organization
like this, we need to consider the agreement from all of us, not from one or two person only.

The very first task goes to our two beloved secretaries which were Evelyn and Syakirah
to create a proposal about the project that we had choose and send it to the HEP. This
proposal was very important in order to give a complete information about our project and
seek for approval to do this project. The approval for doing this project will make sure that
we will get budget in order to make sure this ethics project succeed. Here we realised that all
of us need to work hard in creating the proposal, not only depending on secretaries to make
sure that we will get the approval to proceed this project. In this stage, we discussed about all
the important things that need to be stated inside the proposal and we assigned who’s the ones
who need to do that certain part. As for example, in our program we make an explorace. In
this explorace we stressed on the concept of science and entertainment. Since we know that
we have many checkpoint in explorace, so we assigned each of program department members
to create the proposal about the explaination of each checkpoint modul concept to be put in
proposal. When each person doing their part eventhough they are just a little part, but when
we combined them all, the proposal were easily completed. So here we learnt that
cooperation always need to be prioritised.

When our proposal was finally approved, the next step that we did was making another
meeting among all of our class members to finalise about the program. In this meeting, we
managed to create the tentative or flow of the program, menu throughout the program and list
down all of the stuffs needed for the program including cooking equipment and ingredients.
We also collected some donations from lecturers and students. The donations come in terms
of money to be used as budget for our project also new and old or used books and clothes to
be donated to all of Kampung Simpai villagers.

Referring to the approved proposal, the budget that we got was RM800. This makes us
worried to the most since we knew that this amount of budget are not enough for us to buy all
the stuffs needed for the program. Enough budget is very important for every project to
success. We need more money to buy cooking ingredients, programs stuffs and to prepare
some presents for the kids there. We managed to solve this problem when all of us tried to
seek for sponsorship from outsiders and there were few of us that managed to get the sponsor.
We also collected some amount of money from each of our class members. From our
hardship seeking for additional money to increase the budget, we finally managed to collect a
total of ……. with this amount of money, it help us a lot in buying stuffs needed for the
program. Here we learnt that with every hardship and everyone’s contribution, we will
always be able to overcome every problems. The person in charge about the sponsor
seriously need to communicate their needs to the project sponsors. Make the project sponsors
understand the importance of our project, its success, their role and our expectations toward
them is the key on how to get a sponsor.

We got some problems in making contact with the person in charge at the village our
program will be held which is Kampung Simpai. It is quite difficult for us in deciding on the
flow of program since we did not know the environment and surrounding there. In order to
solve this problem, there are few of us who went to Kampung Simpai during weekend to
meet Sir Mahadi who is one of the teacher in the school. Sir Mahadi is the one who always
keep in touch with us through telephone in order to let us know anything and everything
about SK Simpai and Kampung Simpai. They went there by car drove by Ali. They who went
there were Ali himself, Satiah, Syakirah, Raihan and Hibriyatul. Thanks to all of them for
doing this. Although we know that we were so busy during the weekend since we have to
prepare for tests, quizzes and assignments, they were willing to sacrifice their time and
money to go there. The output that we got from sending these people going there were so
satisfying. We got to know the layout of Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Simpai and also the
environment of Kampung Simpai. This enable us to plan everything about the flow of
program which were where should we cook, what are the stuffs provided for us, where will
we sleep there and the place to do activities during our program.

We were so fortunate since our program will be held after mid semester break. During
mid semester break, we got to prepare most of the stuffs needed for the program. Some of us
did bring cooking utensils from home that need to be used during program. We also collected
some clothes and books donation from our hometown and brought them all back to UiTM
Shah Alam to be packed. From our hard work, we were also managed to get some sponsors
from outsiders which we seeked for during mid semester break also. Program’s stuffs were
also bought by the members of program department during mid semester break. Since we
already bought most of the stuffs for the program during mid semester break, this had make
ease of our job. When mid semester break is over, most of the needed stuffs that already be
bought and collected be brought back to UiTM Shah Alam. This really help in saving our
time doing preparation for the program. Let say if we did not prepare the stuffs during mid
semester break, we will be lack of time since the program will be held during the weekend
after the mid semester break. So here we learnt that we should smartly organised our tasks by
doing early preparation and not to do that on the last minute.

During our mid semester break also, we suddenly informed by our vice president, Satiah
that there were water source problem at Kampung Simpai. There were no water source at all
there. On the same day Satiah informed us this, our secretary, Syakirah quickly contact our
lecturer, Ir. Normadyzah to inform and seek for solution about this problem. We almost
cancelled out this program due to this problem, because we know that everything that we
need to do, especially to cook, we really need water. Water is a basic need of life. Fortunately,
our lecturer got to solve this problem without any hesitation. With the help from our beloved
lecturer, we managed to get water supply from ‘Pengurusan Air Pahang Berhad (PAIP)’ with
the cost of RM400. We got an additional budget from HEP to buy water.

We were quite worried since we not only need to cook for all of our class members and
lecturers to eat, but we also need to provide food for the villagers and kids there. What make
us worried even more, we need to cook for all them instead getting food from catering. This
is so challenging for all of us since there were none of our class members who used to cook
for many people to eat. To cook for about 10 people to eat should be no problem, but this
time we need to cook for about 200 people to eat. The solution that we took to solve this
problem, we try to add more members among our classmates into food department. We know
that when we have more hands to help, every job can always be settled out easily. With the
help from more members, when the members help a little each, their contribution will lead to
a success. We were also very fortunate to be informed by our lecturer that Madam Haslina
who got so many experiences in handling such this program will be also joining our program.
With the help from two experienced lecturer, they surely can ease our journey there.

After the mid semester break, our lecturer Ir. Normadyzah had a meeting with the people
in charges in the food department about the menu list on the days of the program and the
cooking ingredients where to buy and how much that they need to used in the program. With
the help of the lecturer, every member from the food department which were Ali, Syawarina
and Rafiqah was accompanied by lecturer to buy the cooking ingredients on Monday. Not all
the cooking ingredients but some of it were dried ingredients such as Bihun, Breads, eggs,
onions and others that we can get from our places before departure to Kampung Simpai.
While the other members already assigned with their own tasks such as special task
department which were Affendy and Hakim need to print the posters, banner and was asked
to contact with the bus driver and give brief about our journey. The program’s department
were busy with their work which they need to prepare the flow of the program and the
activities that can be done there which involved the kids and villagers before going to
Kampung Simpai. This can be seen that, when everyone functioning in doing their tasks, the
preparations of the program will be more easy and more effective.
On the Friday before we all depart to SK Simpai, we can see that all of us were busy
preparing all of the things such as the cooking utensils and ingredients, program stuffs and
the contribution material to be brought to Kampung Simpai and put all of this into the bus
which we also need to make sure that all of the things were not left behind. Around at 12:00
p.m, before we departure to the Kampung Simpai, we have received a bad news from our
lecturer, Ir. Normadyzah that two of our classmates which were Amirrul and Syafiqah could
not join the programs. They were assigned as the facilitator in the program as told by the
program department. This makes all of us shocked about the news but it is make us more
worried because there were will be not enough members to do the programs. From their
resigned to join the program, it was a last minutes decision. Along the journey, all of us
discussed and asked about who want to be volunteered to replace the two of them. After a
long discussion in the bus, the volunteers who want to be facilitator to replace Amirrul and
Syafiqah were from special task department which were Hakim and Affendy. When all of us
give the great cooperation, the task will be easier to be done and as said one for all and all for
one. If we have each other backing up, the difficult task will be the lighter one. All of us
having fun enjoyed the scenery along the journey. We safely arrived SK Simpai at 7.00p.m,

The first and foremost challenges in doing the program was about the limited water
supply. Since we knew that there were no water supply at all at Kampung Simpai, we
managed to buy two tanks of water from PAIP and we got another one tank of water provided
by Jawatankuasa Kampung. It is quite challenging for us in doing activities with the limited
supply of water especially in prepairing food during the program. So for three days we were
there, we need to use the water in a very wise manner. Thanks to this problem, we at least got
to learn the importance of water and appreaciating them in our daily life.

The next challenge was time management. It takes a significant amounts of time to
develop a productive working relationship, to design projects that meet both learning and
community goals, to manage the logistics of the projects and such. We used to waste most of
our time during meetings and discussions. Thinking on how to overcome this challenge, in
order to run a successful project, it is important for us to communicate in our team in a timely
manner and in the right format. It is important to send the right message at the right time to
get the right results. We need to eliminate unnecessary and distracting communication as it
will help our team to only focus on the right and important messages.
The next most significant challenges is on prepairing the logistics of the program and to
cook during the program. The logistics that we need the most is the cooking utensils and PA
system. For the PA system, we do not need to worry much because Sir Mahadi already
provide them for us at SK Simpai but still we need to bring a portable speaker to be used
during aerobic dance. Logistics department members also managed to borrow a projector
from our faculty and brought them to SK Simpai. A laptop was also being brought by
multimedia media department members to be used there. Most of the logistics that we need
was the ones that to be used by food department members. As we all aware, we do not take
any food from catering service there, instead, we need to cook everytime we need to eat.
Most worrying was when we thought that we also need to cook the food to be eaten by all the
villagers and kids. So here we know that we need many cooking utensils such pans, rice
cookers, water dispenser and such. We also need to prepare all the ingredients to cook. So as
the solution, we bought all the cooking ingredients from Shah Alam all the way to SK Simpai.
Since most of us staying in college, it was quite difficult for us to provide the necessary
cooking utensils. Fortunately, this problem solved by our beloved lecturers and class
members. They offered to bring their own cooking utensils instead of buying the new ones.
So here we can save most of our budget. At SK Simpai, during the prepairing food session,
since we need to cook a large portion of food, it will be difficult we only depends on food
department members to cook. As the solution, all of us agree to help food department
members prepairing the food whenever we were free. The terms ‘free’ here means we need to
settle our job first. Soon after that, we should gave helps in prepairing the food.

Some of the challenges that we faced in doing the activities in this program, the first one is,
it was quite difficult to approach the kids. On our first activity which was ‘ice breaking’
session, most of the kids being so ‘cold’ and shy. Here, all of the facilitators need to approach
the kids in their team one by one until the end of the day, all of kids being brave to talk and
actively involved in every activities we make for them. Here we know that all of our
facilitators did such a very great job.

The next challenge is in ensuring positive community impact. This is a significant concern
since we would like to have our community program to be mutually beneficial not only to us
but also the kids. We also want the kids to feel attractive in joining our activities. For this one,
we need to strategize on what are the activities that will enable the kids to learn something
useful and beneficial from all of us. That was why we organised the explorace game that
having five checkpoints with all of those checkpoint using the modul of science together with
entertainment. This explorace that required all of the teams to participate has successfully
teachs the kids about the importance of cooperation among team members. They also got to
add their knowledge at every checkpoint when the person in charge at every checkpoint gave
details explanation to the kids about the module that they used.

Besides that, we also having difficulties in choosing the suitable activities for the villagers.
After doing a brainstorming among our class members, we managed to organise a medical
checkup and healthy exhibition for the villagers. The medical checkup session was done by
three nurses from Klinik Ibu dan Anak Muadzam Shah, Pahang. The medical checkup
included measuring their height and weight, pressure blood test and testing their sugar level
in body. For the healthy exhibition organised by Pejabat Kesihatan Daerah Rompin show
some posters about the dengue fever. So here the villagers can at least realised about the
importance of health and practising a healthy lifestyle in our daily life. They can also gain
knowledge about the danger that dengue can bring to us.
