1.0 SCOPE
This method statement covers preparation and application of Plate Load
Testing for earthworks at Tasnee HDPE and LDPE Plant Project.

2.0 SAFETY
2.1 Protection and Compliance with the safety regulations shall be in
accordance with approved TAL / GAMA Safety Manual.
2.2 Ensure that aAll personnel are to wearing the proper personal protective
equipment applicable for the task to be performed and shall comply
with all safety requirements that will be required while the test is being
conducted by concerned safety supervisor.
2.3 The operator shall position the loader, apply the brakes and switch off
the engine and dismount form the equipment.
2.4 The technician shall place the test equipment under the rear axel and
when all test equipment is in place the load shall be applied in
increasing increments, all not essential personnel shall be removed from
the immediate area.
2.5 Upon completion of the test all test equipment shall be removed and the
loader taken out of the excavation.

3.0 GENERAL
Plate load test (PLT) is a model test of prototype foundation in which a
steel plate simulates a given foundation. The load test is made at the elevation of
the proposed footing and under same condition to which the proposed footing is
likely to be subjected. The test is used to determine the bearing capacity of soil in
the field by applying a load to a model footing and measuring the induced loads
and the corresponding settlements.

The test loads are applied in increments and the corresponding soil
deformations are measured. Each increment should be left in place for sufficient

time to permit the deformation to become practically constant before the next
increment is applied. A load deformation curve is plotted and the failure stress
may be selected at the point at which the curve breaks more or less sharply.

4.0 PROCEDURES
4.1 Make the excavation to the desired size and depth,
4.2 Place and center the plate (30cm diameter) at the bottom of the test pit,
4.3 A hydraulic jack is placed on the plate to apply the load increments,

4.4 Use the dead load from the axle of the truck to act as the reaction,
which should be centered and aligned with the plate,
4.5 Attach a proving ring in order to read loading increments as load is
applied,
4.6 The load is applied in sufficient number of equal loading increments
(6 to 10), Each load is measured accurately and is applied to the soil as
a static load.
4.7 Dial gauges are attached to the plate (based an independent supports)
in order make settlement readings as the loading increments are
applied.
4.8 Settlement measurements are made as soon as possible before and
after the application of each load increment at equal time intervals
while the load is being held constant (Minimum 6 settlement
measurements between load applications).
4.9 Each test is continued until a peak load is reached or until a pre-set total
settlement is reached.
4.10 After completion of observations for the last load increment, the load
is released in three equal decrements. Records rebound deflections
until the deformation ceases or for a period of time at least equal to
the time duration of a load increment,
4.11 The test is done generally in accordance with ASTM D-1194
procedure,

4.12 The recorded data of pressures and settlements are plotted and a
pressure vs settlement curve is obtained.
