The teacher provided clear explanations of the content. She demonstrated how to
take an idea from a discussion and grow it into a new idea.

1e (obs): Designing coherent instruction 3- Effective


Activities provided for higher level thinking. Students had reflected on their club
conversations from the previous day, then learned and practiced how to grow new
ideas from their conversations. Discussion prompts were posted for all students to
refer to.

2a: Creating an environment of respect and rapport 4- Highly Effective


All observed interactions were highly respectful.

2d: Managing student behavior 4- Highly Effective


Student behavior was entirely appropriate.

3b: Using questioning and discussion techniques 3- Effective


The teacher successfully engaged most students in the various discussions,
including reflections on the previous day's conversations and ways to grow her
model idea.

3c: Engaging students in learning 3- Effective


The learning tasks encouraged higher order thinking, since students had to take a
discussion idea and build off of it.

3d: Using assessment in instruction 3- Effective


The teacher made the standards of high-quality work clear to students, through the
use of a model. The teacher also elicited evidence of student understanding to

help plan for the following lesson. As she met with the students, she placed
students into small groups based on their area of need and worked with them in
the following lesson.

Teitelbaum,

Thank you for welcoming me into your class on 1/17/19. Your classroom had a very positive tone. Students
were very honest and reflective about the club conversations from the previous day. This indicates that
students feel safe expressing themselves in your room. You modeled a discussion, how to grow an idea from
it,
and
provided
students
with
discussion
prompts.

Throughout your discussions, there were so many students who wanted to share. Consider removing
yourself form the conversation when it is appropriate to do so, and either provide students with an opportunity
to turn and talk or allow them to control the discussion by calling on their peers. This will support their growth
as learners to prepare them for middle school, and will support your professional growth in 3b: Using
questioning
and
discussion
techniques.
