CLASSROOM OBSERVATION (OBS):

In each observation, all components for which there is observed evidence must be rated. Each form must
contain lesson-specific evidence for each of the components observed during a classroom observation.

This observation was: (check one)

Formal Observation (full period) Informal Observation (15 minutes minimum)

Date of Observation: 11/30/2018 Time/Period: 9:30/2nd Period

Component Ratings

1a (obs): Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy 3- Effective

You provided clear explanations of the content. You answered students’ questions
accurately and provided feedback that furthered their learning.

1e (obs): Designing coherent instruction 3- Effective

Learning activities were matched to instructional outcomes.

2a: Creating an environment of respect and rapport 3- Effective

Teacher-student interactions were friendly and demonstrate general caring and
respect.

2d: Managing student behavior 3- Effective

Standards of conduct appear to have been established and implemented
successfully.
Overall, student behavior was appropriate throughout the lesson.

3b: Using questioning and discussion techniques 2- Developing

All discussion was between the you and students; students were not invited to
speak directly to one another.

Invite and encourage students to respond to other student's comments and or

responses. This can be challenging with some students, to start, ask students if
they agree with their classmate's response and have them share why or why not.

3c: Engaging students in learning 2- Developing

Student engagement with the content was largely passive during the lesson.

The majority of the class (5 out of 7)recorded your posted responses instead of
engaging in the activity independently as instructed.

student learning throughout the lesson. You circulated to each students to assess
their progress and provided next steps as needed.

4e (obs): Growing and developing professionally 3- Effective

ASSESSMENT OF PREPARATION AND PROFESSIONALISM (P&P):

In this section of the form, evaluators should rate evidence for components 1a, 1e, and 4e that was
observed within fifteen (15) school days prior to the classroom observation as part of an assessment
of a teacher’s preparation and professionalism. Each form must contain teacher-specific evidence
for each of the components observed.

Component Ratings

1a (p&p): Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy 3- Effective

You displayed solid knowledge of the important concepts in the discipline and how
they relate to one another. You demonstrated accurate understanding of
prerequisite relationships among topics.

1e (p&p): Designing coherent instruction 2- Developing

The learning activities and materials were aligned with the instructional outcomes
and represented moderate cognitive challenge, but with no differentiation for
different students.

Your lessons must be differentiated to ensure all students have full access to the
learning.

4e (p&p): Growing and developing professionally 3- Effective

You actively engages with colleagues and supervisors in professional conversation
about practice, including feedback about practice.

Additional Evaluator Notes (please attach more pages, as necessary):

On Friday, November 30, 2018 I observed a lesson you conducted with class 678. The following is an
account of that observation.

Upon entering your class I observed you reviewing key vocabulary terms with students. Kayvon successfully
related the vocabulary words to real-world experiences. You instructed students to focus on lines 3 & 4 from
the 2nd stanza that you projected on the board. After reading the lines, you paraphrase line by line, and
shared the gist. You posted the next 2 lines from the stanza on the board and directed students to work with
you to paraphrase and identify an agreed upon gist. Kayvon volunteered, and read lines 5 & 6 from the 2nd
stanza:

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

and paraphrase it as "Always think a step ahead." You asked if anyone else wanted to share and no one
responded. You shared the following paraphrase:

When you speak the truth, people will twist your words around to make you sound bad. Try to remain calm if
this happens.

You directed students to read, and paraphrase the next 2 lines in the poem. You circulated and provided
support to students as the continued to the 'You Do' component of the lesson.

As discussed during your post observational meeting, it remains imperative that you differentiate to ensure
that all students have full access to the learning. Several of your students are functioning far below grade
level and require additional support outside of you circulating and asking if they need help, or if they
understand. Support your struggling students by providing them with graphic organizers and paraphrasing
the instruction. It may also be necessary (with an identified smaller group) to re-teach while the rest of the
class is working independently. In addition, generate academic discourse among your students by inviting
and encouraging them to respond to other student's comments and or responses.

Moving forward, ensure that you are tracking and documenting students progress in the learning. Use the
collected data to inform your planning. It was a pleasure observing your class. I look forward to visiting
again in late December or early January.
