ACTIVITY 1
As I lie in bed
I always remember you
And in the shadow of your wings
When you are in pain, lonely, or troubled, do you experience of longing for something or
someone?
Since Stone Age, man has always been fascinated, attracted to drawn towards that being
beyond, before whose awesome power he kneels trembling with reverence. In other words,
the human being by nature is God-oriented, a being-toward-God. In the Old Testament, the
psalmist thirsts and yearns for God.
While it is true that we experience satisfaction and meaning through our communion with
others, or through the fulfilment of our projects and endeavor’s in caring for others, we often
find ourselves still searching for that ultimate happiness. This is also true of every intimate
personal relationships. In the beginning, young lovers or newly married couples experience a
certain bliss or joy as if nothing else matters. After a while, however this seamless reciprocity
we have with our beloved starts to change. We find that our lovers have their own individuality
which is not always in harmony with ours. We find ourselves yearning for something more.
The reason why many people never seem to find this ultimate happiness is because
they have been looking for it in the wrong places. For philosophers who reflected on this
fundamental longing, one that we all experience, this deep desire is really a longing for God.
The end of our honeymoon stage, blissful moment with our beloved, does not mean the end
of our relationship. It only means that our relationship in need of God.
The longing for God does not mean, however that we will no longer need others in our
lives. On the contrary, when we embrace this longing for God, we are able to love other
people more fully and unconditionally. It is as if we our hearts have been rendered open to
welcome this overflowing love from God which in turn overflows into our love for persons.

ACTIVITY 5
We are naturally beings-toward-God. We long for God and Ultimate Happiness that we cannot
experience from our relationship with our fellow beings. Hope makes us live our lives
deliberately and meaningfully. By living a life of hope that one day we will be with our God, we
will no longer be afraid of death, and we will be able to love other people more fully and
unconditionally.
