BROOD AND GROW CHICKS (COC 2)

The COC 2 consists of a competency that a person must achieve to conduct preparatory activities, place
brooder in growing house, feed birds, provide optimum environment for the birds, perform prophylactic and
therapeutic measures and perform flock selections for broiler and layer.

A person who has achieved this Competency is competent in Animal Production (Poultry-Chicken) NC II
and shall be awarded a Certificate of Competency in Animal Production (Poultry-Chicken) NC II. The Unit of
Competency comprising this COC includes:

Individuals aspiring to be awarded the qualification of ANIMAL PRODUCTION (POULTRY-CHICKEN) NC II


must acquire the remaining three (3) Certificate of Competencies as follows:

TRAINING DELIVERY

The delivery of training should adhere to the design of the curriculum. Delivery should be guided by the
principles of competency-based training.
a) Course outline is based on competency standards/training regulations;
b) Training delivery is learner-centered and should accommodate individualized and self-paced learning
strategies;
c) Training can be done on an actual workplace setting or on a simulated workplace;
d) Assessment is based in the collection of evidence of the performance of work;
e) Assessment of competency takes the trainee’s knowledge and attitude into account but requires
evidence of actual performance of the competency as the primary source of evidence;
f) Training program allows for recognition of prior learning (RPL) or current competencies; and
g) Training completion is based on satisfactory performance of all specified competencies indicated in the
progress chart.

TRAINEE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Trainees or students should possess the following requirements:


• Can communicate in Basic English either oral or written; and
• Can perform basic mathematical computation.

Prior to accreditation, a training provide must have a Memorandum of Agreement with private poultry farm with
a at least one poultry house as practice farm/workplace for the trainees.

TRAINER’S QUALIFICATIONS

Trainers shall be required to be certified to the National Certificate for which qualification they will train.
TESDA shall provide an online training on Plan Training Session and Facilitate Learning Sessions to the
potential trainers.1
Minimum requirements:
 Holder of a National Certificate in the Qualification s/he will teach; and
 Has completed the following units of Trainer’s Methodology Level I:
i. Plan Training Sessions;
 Identifying learner’s training requirements
 Prepare session plan
 Prepare instructional materials
 Prepare assessment instruments (Institutional)
 Organize learning and teaching resources ;and
ii. Facilitate Learning Sessions
 Prepare training facilities /resources
 Conduct pre-assessment
 Facilitate training session
 Conduct competency assessment
 Review delivery of training session

MODULE TITLE : BROODING AND GROWING CHICKS

UNIT CODE : AFF622102

MODULE DESCRIPTOR : This module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to
brood and grow chicks. It includes conducting preparatory
activities, placing brooder in growing house, feeding of birds,
providing optimum environment for the birds, performing
preventive and therapeutic measures and performing flock
selections either as broiler and layer.

NOMINAL DURATION : 60 hours

LO1. PERFORM PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) is applied according to OHS procedures.


2. Poultry house was cleaned and disinfected according to company standard procedures.
3. Materials, tools and equipment are prepared according to production requirements.
4. Chick guard, curtains and portable heaters are installed and adjusted based on industry
standards.
5. Litter materials are cleaned and laid-out, regularly following farm plans and schedule.

LO2. PLACE CHICKS AND PULLETS IN BROODER HOUSE

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Broiler and layer stocks are obtained from reliable/recommended sources.


2. A day-old chicks (DOC) and day-old pullets (DOP) are placed to respective brooding
houses observing Good Animal Practices and Animal Welfare Act.
3. Chicks with abnormalities are culled from the flock.

LO3. PERFORM BREEDING OF BIRDS

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Feeders and waterers are prepared and cleaned regularly


2. Poultry is fed according to company feeds and feeding guide.
3. Nutrient supplementation is practiced as remedial measures according to instructions of
immediate authority.
4. Water is given according to industry standards and bird requirements.
5. Feed left-over is properly secured and spoiled feed is disposed properly.

4. Bio-security measures are applied according to industry procedures.
5. Vermin control is done following industry procedures.
6. Disposal of wastes are performed following DENR regulations.

LO5. PERFORM PREVENTIVE AND TREATMENT MEASURES

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:

1. Distress conditions of poultry are determined and reported to immediate authority or


veterinarian.
2. Preventive measures are administered according to veterinarian recommendations and
instructions.
3. Sick birds are isolated for treatment following instructions of veterinarian.
4. Culling procedures are applied with reference to economic considerations and according
to instructions of immediate authority.
