The Cloud Hangover
Many enterprises experience a ‘cloud hangover’
due to the unanticipated costs associated with the

cloud-based services. This could be in the form

costs have risen. Almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of
businesses spent £106,000 or more implementing
cloud-based services when surveyed in August
2015. In 2013, only 50 per cent of businesses had
crossed the same threshold.
A range of costs, which only became apparent
after implementation, were also identified by the
respondents. More than one-third (36 per cent)

to Office 365, Fenmarc also chose Microsoft’s
cloud-based client management solution Intune
to replace Microsoft System Centre Configuration

software and anti-virus updates and patches,
software and hardware inventory, and includes all
mobile devices.
Squeezed Timescales
Fenmarc and EACS worked to very short timescales
under tremendous pressure to complete the
migration within just four weeks. Due to the
confidential nature of the sell-off, it was not
possible to have EACS on-site during the planning
and specification phase. However, as Office 365 is
cloud-based, much of the work could be done off-
site. “The main challenge was the sheer enormity
of the project and the very short timescales. It
was both physically and mentally challenging to
maintain focus. Everything had to be planned
meticulously; I had three separate project plans
that we had to follow to the letter. There was no
room for slippage and no opportunity to move
tasks around,” said Paul. “Our saving grace was that
we could rely on EACS. We had great confidence in
the relationship and knew we could depend on the
team.”
EACS had previously installed Mimecast
archiving software, which really came into its own
as the team hit the data migration part of the

Alistair Forbes discusses
the benefits of
cloud-based analytics for
managed service providers
THE CLOUD
By Alistair Forbes, General Manager,

Introduction
No awards for ‘prophetically’ stating that the
cloud is growing in impact and importance for
MSPs – more and more industry focus on the cloud
means MSPs are looking not only to move their
core business into it, but also to support customers’
cloud-to-cloud integrations and security. Among
the many benefits that cloud-based systems offer,
the opportunity to capitalise on big data analytics
is one of the most far-reaching. However, actually
realising this particular benefit can be challenging.
Even within a single MSP, the volumes of
data generated by monitoring and management
platforms are substantial and most do not have
the in-house capability to utilise sophisticated
analytics tools to derive actionable insights from
that data. The possibilities are amplified when
cloud-based platforms aggregate data from large
communities of users to capitalise on the collective
intelligence that is created. Within market-leading
cloud-based management platforms, there are
billions of data points across millions of enterprises’
devices managed by MSPs that can be analysed
and synthesised in order to better manage, protect
and support clients’ businesses. However, not only
do MSPs have to manage the explosion of the
size and mix of business data, they also have to
simultaneously reduce spend on storing, processing,
archiving and analysing that data. Putting in place
the tools and the talent that are required is often
cost-prohibitive for small to medium sized MSPs.
Circumventing these obstacles is where intelligent
cloud-based analytics, delivered as an integral part
of the tools that MSPs use every day, comes into
play.
