1.3 DEFINITIONS
Hot work Works involving electric arc welding, welding, gas heated or oxyacetylene
welding gun, flame cutting, grinding, cross cutting, drilling, inserting fire etc.
These works produce flames, heat or sparks if work of such are to done at
site.
Hot Work The hot work permit is a written authorization, issued by an initiator (site
Permit manager or representative), stipulating that work at a hot spot may be
executed, by persons appointed according to certain previously defined
conditions (e.g.: equipment, organizational and human means). This permit is
drawn up with the aim of preventing fire and explosion risks. It is a special form
of work permit
2 CONTENT
Life-saving rule: Do not perform hot work unless the fire or explosion risks have been eliminated
2.1 RESPONSIBILITIES
It is the responsibility of the Project Manager, HSE Representative, Supervisors and to ensure that
the requirements of this procedure are communicated, understood and followed by all affected
personnel
It is the responsibility of authorized welding and cutting equipment user to inspect equipment
before use, and use them as per this procedure.
It is the responsibility of the activity Supervisor/Foreman to take all the appropriate measures as
described in this procedure, prior, during and after the intervention.
Take all the appropriate measures in terms of the nature of the work to be carried out, in particular:
Move away, protect or cover the combustible or flammable materials from all source of
heat. Segregate combustible or flammable from fireproof and non-combustible.
Block the openings or cracks with the help of sand, fireproof tarpaulins, etc.
Ensure effective degassing if the work must be carried out on a hollow volume.
If the work is carried out in metal pipes, remove from the passage of these pipes any
combustible or inflammable object.
In terms of the works to be carried out, use extinguishers suited to the risks:
Take the necessary measures to avoid the triggering of the automatic detection or extinguishment
system.
Compile the Hot Work Permit and get it signed with the general Work Permit.
Do not hang the blowtorch on the regulator (when it is operational) in close proximity to
bottles and do not place it on the ground.
Switch on the automatic extinguishing or detection system, which was previously switched off.
Carefully inspect the place of work, adjacent premises that may have been affected by
incandescent spattering or by transferred heat.
Continue to strictly monitor the situation for the period required after cessation of work, according
to the Hot Work Permit signed.
Recommend special attention to employees in charge of last rounds. In this case it is essential to
respect the control and monitoring procedure of work premises.
Once the operation has been carried out in an area without supervision, the person executing the
works must ensure, prior to leaving the premises that there is no risk of the fire spreading.
Only authorized employees who have been properly trained shall be permitted to perform
hot work activities .
Do not perform any hot work operations in any area where there is danger of fire unless
you have received permission to do so from HSE.
Provisions for Hot Work authorization shall be made by HSE and a fire watch provided to
properly safeguard the area.
HOT WORK is not to be done on or in any tank, pipe line, compartment or container until it
has been thoroughly purged, cleaned and proved to be free from explosive vapors or any
danger of explosion, by means of gas detector
When HOT WORK is carry out in any confined space, the space shall be cleaned,
tested and properly ventilated approved work such activities
Ventilation shall be provided to keep the space purged of any possible accumulation
of flammable gas or vapors. If welding or burning is done on the outside of the structure
and there is any possibility of flammable gases accumulating, the interior shall be properly
purged to prevent any fire or explosion
