Lau, J. (23 August 2018). Understanding how speech develops. HSCI.

https://hsci.harvard.edu/news/understanding-how-speech-develops

Lau’s article introduces us to the basics and the start of the gene SCN3A. As

scientists have discovered a gene involved in brain development, specifically

in the areas related to speech and language. She explained how the issue was

first brought into account as rare families are affected by polymicrogyria. By

analyzing the family’s genomes, the researchers identified a mutation in the

gene SCN3A. The article listed multiple scientists associated with the study

and the outlines of the research process. It contains a logical experiment and

trial scientists have done with each trial more data are collected building a

clearer path into the future. This source was posted in 2018, 2 years ago

however this gene is researched and finally identified later that year causing

this source to be one of the most recent information for my topic.

The article is written by Jessica Lau, communications manager of Harvard

Stem Cell Institute and Harvard Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative

Biology. With information from famous universities like Harvard University

their research and data are mostly trustworthy.

The article is short and not too much into detail about the research but more

like outlines and plans of what happens. Understanding this research outline

would help me to summarize the finding in short. This will fit into how I

summarize and give basic ideas explaining what the genes are about.

ResearchGate. (12 September 2018). New gene discovery related to speech and motor

development. ResearchGate.

https://www.researchgate.net/blog/post/new-gene-discovery-related-to-speech-and-m

otor-development

This article introduces us to the basic outline of the discovery of SCN3A. It

includes an interview with Richard S. Smith, a scientist in the Walsh Lab in

the Division of Genetics at Boston Children’s Hospital and Department of

Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Smith led the study of SCN3A with

his fellow co-senior and associate professor of pathology at BCH and HSCI

Affiliate Faculty member. The interview includes a basic explanation of the

issue with the SCN3A as when this gene is mutated it causes polymicrogyria

which is a rare brain disease.

This source is published in researchgate, a social networking site for scientists

and researchers to share papers, ask and answer questions and find

collaborators. With multiple science related and research being shared here by

professionals, I think the source is pretty trustworthy.

The basic outline of the discovery and the interview information will help and

fit into my final speech as it will provide an opinion from an expert in the

field. It will help me to explain the importance of the discovery, the treatment

of the conditions and the future research for the cure.

Wood, J. (n. d). WOLFSON INSTITUTE FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH. UCL.

roup/professor-john-wood

Wood J. introduce us to his research on the SCN3A, focuses on genetic

approaches to understanding the biology of damage-sensing neurons,

somatosensation, pain and touch. The most important information on this

source is the explanation of how this topic is related to globalization. As also

stated in another article about globalization but with this source beating it all

with clear explanation. It explains how this topic globalized as his research

groups collaborate with multiple research groups from all around the world

like in Europe, the United States, Korea, Japan and Australia. They provide

information about pain pathways, the systems to understand how the nervous

system works and the research data.

Professor Wood J. a scientist in the research group with Richard Smith of

Boston Children's Hospital, shared his experience in the case study of the

SCN3A. With this as a primary source the information contained is very

trustworthy.

The information this source contains is very important and will fit into my

final speech as it demonstrates how this topic is related with globalization and

how this topic is a specific example of how globalization works.

SCN2A in Epilepsy, Intellectual Disability, and Autism. ScienceDirect.

Yamakawa K. has introduced us to the research process with detailed

information of patients and research, other sources did not provide. It

describes the study on patients with information of their health and how the

mutated SCN3A affected their body.

Kazuhiro Yamakawa is the author of this source, a team leader of

neurogenetics. Aiming to elucidate the pathological cascades for epilepsy,

autism and intellectual disability by identifying and analyzing the responsible

genes. The site is ScienceDirect, a website which provides subscription-based

access to a large database of scientific and medical research. It is the world's

leading source for scientific, technical, and medical research with over 12

million pieces of content from 3,500 academic journals and 34,000 e-books.

From this I think the source is pretty trustworthy.

The information provided in this source will fit into my final speech as I will

use it to describe the effect the gene does to the human body and how many

people are affected by it, causing it to be so important.

This source is an author manuscript written by the scientists in the research

team. It is a whole lab report journal of their discovery of this new gene:

SCN3A. It describes their objective, methods and result in logical manner with

graph and detailed explanation.

This is trustworthy because it is a primary source from scientists in the

research team and it is in very detailed explanation of each step in the research

process. The information included demonstrates how the information is factual

and is experimented with given clear results.

This source fits into my final speech as it explains all of the procedure and

method of the discovery. It will help me as a background knowledge of how

the research went and any possible information other sources miss.
