WORKBOOK IN FULLER LESSONS

TEACHING LEARNING TO READ


IN ENGLISH THROUGH THE
FULLER TECHNIQUE

The fuller technique was developed by Richard and Elizabeth

Fuller. It is a combination of the alphabet, the phonetic and the

whole word methods of teaching word attack skills. The

technique requires that the beginning readers has complete

mastery of the names and forms of the letters of the alphabet,

and the sound of each consonant in the English alphabet. It

further requires that the beginning reader has adequate

vocabulary development that will make every word in the lessons

meaningful. This also implies that the words in the lessons which

may not be known to the beginning reader should be unlocked by

the teacher prior to the reading lessons.

The following steps are suggested in using Fuller lessons:

1. Teach the child the name and form of all the letters in the
English alphabet. He doesn’t need to know the consonants
or vowels.
2. Teach him the consonant sounds; review the form.
3. Present the words in each lesson in a column with the use of
a window card or a marker. Say the first word in the column
aloud to the child. Then move the marker down to the next
word and ask the child to read it. Because the words use
same endings, the rhyme will help him recognize each word
in the column.

4. Go to the next column, pointing out to the child that the


ending is changed. Begin the column and let him read down
the column. Do not let him attempt to read across the page.
This will confuse him.

5. After the first 5 lessons, go back to lesson 1 for a review. Let


the child read the words down each column, then across the
page from column to column.

6. In each of the succeeding lessons, the child reads down each


column and then across the page from column to column.
We need not wait 5 or more lessons to do this.

DIAGNOSTIC READING TEST IN BEGINNING READING

The Diagnostic Reading Test in English has four parts and

follows the sequence of the Fuller Lessons. The first part should

be administered before beginning reading instruction in English is

started.

The Diagnostic Reading Tests can be used as basis for

grouping the children during the transfer stage period. Since the

element of chance cannot be eliminated, the teacher must also

find out whether her day-to-day observation of each pupil

warrants his staying with a particular group.

On this page is the past Diagnostic Reading Test which

should be administered before beginning reading instruction.
