A Two Minute Conversation

Paul
You don’t remember me, but…I remember you
(Pause)
Susan
That is the creepiest chat-up line I have ever heard
Paul
That came out wrong…I…don’t you remember me?
Susan
(Grins)
Do I want to?
Paul
Paul White. I work in accounts. Does that ring a bell?
Susan
……
Paul
Christmas party? Buzz Bar?
Susan
Oh, I remember you! Your Tony’s friend, right?
Paul
Yes! Whew! I was getting worried there. Thought you might call the
police!

Susan stares blankly at Paul. Paul musters a hesitant chuckle.

Susan
Yes, that’s right. Paul. So how is Tony?
Paul
Well, you know, same old!
Susan
Same old…what exactly?
Paul
Err…well to be perfectly honest, I only met Tony that night and I
haven’t spoken to him since
Susan
Oh, really? So, you don’t actually know Tony…
Paul
I do! It’s just that…his phone is always engaged…
Susan
Riiight. So, excuse me for being a little blunt, but what exactly is it
that you want?
Paul
Well…I…thought it’d be nice to catch up. You know, see what’s new!
Susan
Catch up?
Paul
Yeah…
Susan
On what?
Paul
Erm…
Susan
Look, Paul. I think its clear that we’re not that well acquainted. And
following on that train of honesty, I don’t want to be.
Paul
You don’t want to…?
Susan
…be acquainted with you. Is that honest enough for you?

Stunned, Paul simply stares at her.

Susan
Freak

Susan picks up her purse and mobile. She then gets up to leave.

Paul
All I wanted to do was to have a chat. Get to know you, perhaps even
tell you a little about me in the process. What’s wrong with that?
Probably I am a freak to want to talk to you. I mean what the hell is
this world coming to if it’s so strange to make conversation with
someone? And I always thought it was good to talk…

Paul gets up and storms off, leaving Susan speechless.
