There are two main types of diesel fuel supply systems: air injection systems which inject fuel along with compressed air into the cylinder, and airless injection systems which only inject fuel without air into the cylinder. Early diesel engines used air injection systems where fuel was pumped by a plunger into injectors and forced into the cylinder by a blast of compressed air for better fuel atomization, while modern airless injection systems directly inject fuel into the cylinder under high pressure of 65 to 250 kg/cm2 without using compressed air.

1) Air injection. 2) Air less injection. In air injection system the diesel is injected along with compressed air. In air less injection system only diesel is injected in cylinder. It also called
solid injection system.
Air injection system :- The earliest diesel engine employed air injection the fuel in which was feed to the injectors by plunger type’s pump. Being force in to the cylinder by blast of air of pressure between 40 and 65 kg/cm2 when the injector needle valve was lifted by its cam the blast air produce good auto mutation of fuel. Air less injection system :- Airless or mechanical or solid injection. In this case the fuel is sprayed in to the cylinder by direct injection of a
plunger passage the pressure in the pipe is 65 to 250 kg/cm2.
