 “Good morning candidates, my name is Robert Arcilla, your competency accredited assessor for
SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING NC II. Here’s my ID numbers 6969 as proof of evidence.

Assessor
 Before we start, I would acknowledge the presence of our TESDA Representative
_____________________ and the AC Manager ______________________.
 Don’t worry about their presence for they are here to oversee the conduct of assessment, if it is in
accordance with the prescribed competency assessment methodologies and procedures. They will not
assess you

 3rd Before we proceed, let me check your attendance, As I call your name, please come forward and
present to me your admission slip.
 (check and compare the trainee vs. Identification)

 4th I have here your accomplished APPLICATION FORM and SELF-ASSESSMENT GUIDE. This is an
indication that you know and can able to perform all the units of competency enumerated in SMAW
NCII
 Before we start the assessment, let us have first the ORIENTATION
ORIENTATION
What is Assessment? – It is the process of collecting evidence and making judgement on whether
competency has been achieved.

What is the purpose of assessment? - It is for QUALIFICATION, RECRUITEMENT and EDUCATIONAL NEEDS.
What do we mean by NC II? National Certificate Level II in SMAW NC II
It is composed of;
1. BASIC Competencies
2. COMMON Competencies
3. CORE Competencies – but we will be focusing on the core units of competencies; with 4
unit of competency;
a. Perform weld carbon steel pipe at 1G position
b. Perform weld carbon steel pipe at 2G position
c. Perform weld carbon steel pipe at 5G position
d. Perform weld carbon steel pipe at 6G position

 You will undergo 2 types of assessment such as DEMONSTRATION and an ORAL INTERVIEW.
 Since SMAW is a PROJECT TYPE ASSESSMENT, which means no COC, it means that you need to be
competent in 4 units of Core Competencies. If failed to do so, you are going to submit again yourselves
for RE-ASSESSMENT. Any Question?
 A candidate or a person who has achieved this, Qualification is competent to be:
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Welder)

ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
 Candidates number 1,2,3 will be the first set to perform,
 to be followed by candidates’ number 4,5,6 and candidates’ number 7,8,9,10 for the last set.
 You will be given 1hour to perform weld carbon steel pipe 1G position without
 1hour to perform weld carbon steel pipe 2G position
 1hour to perform weld carbon steel pipe 5G position
 1hour to perform weld carbon steel pipe 6G position
 Within 4 hours you are expected to perform the task with satisfactory rating.
 After demonstration is an ORAL INTERVIEW for a maximum of 30 minutes.
 In oral interview, you need to have 8 correct answers out of 10 questions to be considered
SATISFACTORY.
 Please be reminded of the DO’S AND DON’T’S
 Do always follow the OHS procedure when conducting the demonstration.
 Do not use cellular phone as assessment going on

 Do not leave within the premises without informing the assessor/staff
 We also consider allowable adjustments, is there anybody has a different religion aside from catholic?
or taking medications to be considered? Is there anyone here have difficulties in understanding in
English? that may affect the assessment procedure? Just let me know.
ASSESSMENT RESULTS
 As candidate, if you are not satisfied with the result given by me, you have the right to appeal through
writing addressed to the AC Manager immediately after the assessment.
 And me, As Assessor, I have the right to STOP the assessment if there is danger to occur.
 Upon receiving your CARS which will be given to you by the Assessment Center manager, after 3
working days you may apply for the issuance of your NC at TESDA provincial office (TESDA RAWIS) just
bring with you the following requirements:
a. CARS
b. passport size picture with collar, white background and
c. php 50.00 for processing fee.
 Your NC is valid for 5 years
 If you’re not competent, you must: Apply for reassessment of at any accredited assessment center in
your own most convenient time.
 The result of this assessment is strictly confidential.

(DURING THE ASSESMENT)

assessment . . . these are the tools.
 For performing root pass, hot pass, filling and capping:
1. Welding table
2. Welding machine with complete accessories
3. Electrode, electrode cable, electrode holder
4. Portable grinder
5. Portable oven (pre heat electrode)
6. Steel brush
7. Chipping hammer
8. PPEs (leather gloves, leather apron, safety helmet, safety googles, boot,
welding cap)

DEMONSTRATION
 In your demonstration in Project 1 you succesfully

 In Project 3 you successfully


performed weld carbon steel pipe in 5G position without any defects, you’ve got
SATISFACTORY.
 . In project number 4 you successfully
performed weld carbon steel pipe 6G position, however there is a lot of undercut, cracks, spats
and porosities in your work piece which is very CRITICAL IN THE ASSESSMENT, so you’re NOT
SATISFACTORY in Project 4.
 So my advice to you is to practice more on weld carbon steel pipe in 6G position. Please be familiarize
with the specified welding codes and standards. OK?
 Your Overall results for demonstration is NOT Satisfactory since you got NOT SATISFACTORY rating at
Project 4 which is to perform weld carbon steel pipe 6G position
