DIFFERENT

TYPES OF ROCKS
FOUND IN THE
PHILIPPINES

Michaelle Gwyneth B. Agripa

Grade III – St. Matthew
Igneous Rocks
Formed from melted rock that has cooled and solidified.

Obsidian - is a naturally occurring volcanic

glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock.
Obsidian is produced when felsic lava
extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with
minimal crystal growth. It is used to make
knives, arrowheads, spear points, scrapers,
and many other weapons and tools.

Granite - is an intrusive igneous rock.

Intrusive rocks form from molten material
(magma) that flows and solidifies
underground. It used in buildings, bridges,
paving, monuments, and many other exterior
projects.

Pumice - is a light-colored, extremely

porous igneous rock that forms during
explosive volcanic eruptions. It is used as
aggregate in lightweight concrete, as
landscaping aggregate, and as an abrasive
in a variety of industrial and consumer
products.
Sedimentary Rocks
Are types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent
cementation of that material at the Earth's surface and within bodies of water.

Quartz - is an important mineral with

numerous uses. Sand, which is composed
of tiny Quartz pebbles, is the primary
ingredient for the manufacture of glass.

Limestone - is used as a building

material, and to purify iron in blast
furnaces. It's also used in the
manufacture of glass, and of cement
(one of the components of concrete)

Coal - combustible black or brownish-

black sedimentary rock with a high
amount of carbon and hydrocarbons.
Coal's high energy density and
extensive reserves found in nature make
it useful as a fuel for electricity
generation in coal-fired power plants,
and in some places, heating.
Metamorphic Rocks
is a result of a transformation of a pre-existing rock. The original rock is
subjected to very high heat and pressure, which cause obvious physical and/or
chemical changes.

Marble - s a stone which is composed of

calcite, dolomite or serpentine which is
capable of taking a
polish. Because marble can be easily
sculpted, it has found many uses in the
construction of buildings and
monuments, as well as an ornamental
feature in house interiors

Slate – is a fine-grained,
clayey metamorphic rock that cleaves,
or splits, readily into thin slabs having
great tensile strength and durability;
some other rocks that occur in thin beds
are improperly called slate because they
can be used for roofing and similar
purposes.

Quartzite - is a natural stone and

basically a metamorphic rock that is
formed under intense heat and pressure
from pure quartz sandstone beneath the
Earth's crust. It is used to decorate
floors, stair steps, in walls, roofing tiles,
and the manufacture of kitchen
countertops, among many other
decorative uses.
