Theoretical Distribution

1. In a distribution exactly normal, 7 % of the items are under 35 and 89 % are under

63. Find the mean and Standard deviation of the distribution.

2. In a normal distribution, 30 % items are under 45 and 8% are over 45. Find mean and

standard deviation.

3. Assuming that the diameters of 1000 brass plugs taken consecutively from machine

from a normal distribution with mean 0.7515 cm and standard deviation 0.0020 cm.

How many of the plugs are likely to be approved if the acceptable diameter is 0.752 ±

0.004 cm.

4. For a normal distribution of sample size 1000, mean is 15 and standard deviation is

2. Find the number of samples for which the normal variables X such that:

(i) 12 6 X 6 15 (ii)X > 20.

5. In a sample of 1000 candidates, the mean of certain test is 14 and standard deviation

is 2.5. Assuming that data is normally distributed, find: (i) How many scores below

8 (ii) How many scores between 12 and 13. (ii) How many scores above 15.

6. The mean weight of 500 students is 63 kg and the standard deviation is 8 kg. Assum-

ing that the weights are normally distributed, find how many students weigh 52 kg.

The weights are recorded to the nearest kg.

7. A random sample of 200 screws is drawn from a population which represents the

size of screws. If a sample is distributed normally with a mean 3.15 cm and standard

deviation 0.025 cm, find expected number of screws whose size falls between 3.12 cm

and 3.2 cm.

1000 burning hours with standard deviation of 200 hours, (i) What number of lamps

might be expected to fail in the first 700 burning hours? (ii) After what period of

burning hours 10 % of the lamps would still be burning?

9. In a test on 2000 electric bulbs, it was found that the life of a particular make was

normally distributed with an average life of 2040 hours and standard deviation of 60

hours. Estimate the number of bulbs likely to burn for: (i) More than 2150 hours. (ii)

More than 1950 hours. (iii) More than 1920 hours but less than 2160 hours?

10. A sample of 100 dry battery cells were tested to find the length of life. If the mean

is 12 hours and standard deviation is 3 hours, assuming the data to be normally

distributed, what number of battery cells are expected to have life: (i) More than 15

hours. (ii) Less than 6 hours. (iii) Between 10 and 14 hours.

11. 5000 candidates appeared in a certain paper carrying a maximum of 100 marks. It was

found that marks were normally distributed with mean 39.5 and standard deviation

12.5. Determine approximately the number of candidates who secured a first class

for which minimum of 60 marks is necessary. Given .

12. A fair coin is tossed 600 times. Using normal distribution find the probability of

getting: (i) Number of heads less than 270. (ii) Number of heads between 280 to 360.

13. A manufacturer of envelopes knows that the weight of envelopes is normally dis-

tributed with mean 1.9 gm and variance 0.01 gm. Find how many envelopes weigh-

ing: (i) 2 gms or more. (ii) 2.1 gms and more can be expected in a given packet of

1000 envelopes.
