Worksheet 6- Normal Z- WORD PROBLEMS

1. Tests on electric lamps of a certain type indicated that their lengths of life could be assumed to be
normally distributed about a mean of 1860 hours with a standard deviation of 68 hrs. Estimate the % of
lamps which can be expected to burn
(a) more than 2000 hrs (b) less than 1750 hrs.

2. Steel rods which are being manufactured to a specification of 30mm in diameter are acceptable if they
are within the tolerance limits 30.1mm and 29.9mm. If the diameters can be assumed to be normally
distributed with mean 30.02 mm and s.d. 0.06 mm, estimate the % of rods which will be rejected.

3. The mass of a small loaf of bread is normally distributed with mean 500g and standard deviation 20g.
Find the probability that a loaf, chosen at random, has a mass:
(a) not exceeding 475g (b) not less than 495g (c) at most 510g (d) at least 515g

4. Batteries for a radio have a mean life of 160 hours and a standard deviation of 30 hours. Assuming that
the battery life follows a normal distribution, calculate:
(a) The proportion of batteries which have a life of more than 180 hours or less than 150 hours.
(b) the range (symmetrical about the mean) within which 75% of batteries lie.

5. The weights of baby boys at a certain age are found to be normally distributed with mean 15kg and
standard deviation 4kg.
Find the weight which is exceeded by (a) 5% (b) 2.5% of all boys.
Find the weight below which the proportion of boys lie for (c) 5% (d) 2.5%
Give the upper and lower values between which (e) 90% (f) 95% of boys weights will lie.

6. A species of cactus is found to have heights which follow a normal distribution with mean 1.3m and s.d.
0.2m
(a) What height is exceeded by 5% of the population?
(b) between what two values would 95% of the heights lie?

7. The weight of a packet of sugar is advertised a 1kg. in fact they are made in a process which has a
mean of 1003g with s.d. 12 g.
(a) Find the weight which will be exceeded by 80% of all bags
(b) find the weights, symmetrical about the mean, between which 99% of all bags will lie.
