2. INTRODUCTION
Childhood is a tender and delicate stage in the life span of a human being. At this
stage people require a great deal of care, love and nurture in order to have a robust set
of values and morals. The required care, love and nurture are generally imparted to us
by our families. But there are many children not fortunate enough like we are, orphans
and not having a family doesn’t make them any less of a human. They too have a right
to have a comfortable shelter just like us. Now there are similar case with slightly
different parameters. Many of us because of our egocentric, egotistical and selfish
nature tend to forsake our own parents who took care and nurtured us. Many of us end
up abandoning our parents at old age homes. Now if we consider both the above cases
we could infer that they both lack a mutual feeling and that is deep affection, warmth,
attachment and love. Orphans always deficient of parental or elderly love and
abandoned parents always deficient of the love obtained from children.
Orphans in orphanages are given a safe environment in which to grow, given
somewhere to sleep, regular food and schooling, and visit their families often.
Most important though, is that children in orphanages are given a stable lifestyle that
they would not find at home. Orphanages are able to care for more children than a
single parent on his/her own.
Old age homes provide a sense of security for old people and a feeling of satisfaction
that they are not forgotten. The sight and idea of senior citizens having to go to an old
age home are frowned upon. When it is considered a crime for adults to abandon their
kids, it is also shameful that some kids are not ready to take up the responsibility for
their parents. It is very sad that parents who spent their lives sacrificing their needs
and interests to fulfill the wishes of their children are ignored by their kids at their
time of need. But it is not the case always. There are senior citizens who are single
and have no family, who are depressed and crave for the company of their own kind.
Some senior citizens are physically and mentally dependent, and they need someone
to give them full attention and keep a constant check on them. A well maintained and
facilitated senior citizen home provides them with immense attention and proper
medical care. Old age homes provide their residents with a proper home to live in,
along with preserving their respect, dignity, and privacy.

3. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 The goal would be to establish a mutual relationship. The elderly will act as a
parent figure in the orphans life, and the children would act as young
companion to each other.
 The purpose of this study intends to provide ample opportunities to meet the
growing needs of this age groups through the analytical applications of
architecture and the built environment.
 The thesis aims to address the major void in current situation.

4. JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT

It is an interactive platform between old age homes and orphanages. The aim of the
project would be to establish a mutual relationship amongst the two groups. The idea
to create a space for interaction and a common shelter for two generations where the
two generations can act as a supportive pillars to each other. In which elderly would
act as a parents while the children would be source of happiness, someone in need and
responsibility. The elderly could play an important role in the children's lives,
likewise the children could play an important role in lives of the elderly.
Nepal's statistical data projects, there are 11.5 million children. Out of them,
1,000,000 are orphans. The causes of abandonment of these children are death of
parents, sickness, poverty, re-marriage of their parents and difficult living conditions.
Very tender children are dying in Nepal uncared for, unlooked after- orphaned by the
ultimately death of their parents. In this critical situation, these orphans and
abandoned children are forced to live in the streets, child, labor and displaced.

In Nepal, individuals over 60 years of age are considered elderly. According to the
2011 census of Nepal, there were 2.1 million elderly inhabitants, which constitute 8.1
percent of the total population in the country. Percent of elderly inhabitants during the
years 1951 (5.0%), 1991 (5.8%), 2001 (6.5%), and in 2011 (8.1%) which shows that
there has been a sharp increase in the number of elderly persons between 2001 and
2011.2-4 This indicates the starting of the ageing dynamics in Nepal, which will have
adverse effects on Nepalese social structure and economy in the long run.

5. OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

 To help both the groups blend together and connect well enough with each
other so that they can act as a support system for one another.
 To make sure that these groups are not isolated and considered as a part of the
society and to bring them together on a common platform for their
comprehensive development and betterment.
 To design planned spaces for interaction between the two generations keeping
in mind their priorities.
