LUBE OIL SELECTION GUIDELINES ITN52220.01 2

1. SCOPE

This document is dedicated to the description of the process to select the most suitable lube oil type,
according to the machinery train composition and ambient temperature. It contains a guideline to
perform this selection.

3. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF OIL COMPOSITION

Oil is constituted by a base and an additive pack.

According to API, oil base stocks are classified as follows depending on chemical nature (mineral or
synthetic):

BASE STOCKS - API CLASSIFICATION

Physical Specifications

Saturated
Sulfur Hydrocarbons
Group VI (1) wt % wt % Production process
Mineral oil derived from natural
80-
I 119 >0.03 <90 hydrocarbon source
Mineral oil derived from natural
80-
II 119 <0.03 >90 hydrocarbon source
Mineral oil derived from natural
III ≥ 120 <0.03 >90 hydrocarbon source
Poly Alpha Olefins (PAO) derived by
chemical synthesys from natural hydrocarbon
IV source
Chemical Synthesis
V All base stocks not in Groups I-IV

1) VI means Viscosity Index – it is an arbitrary number used to characterize the variation of

kinematic viscosity with temperature. A higher VI indicates a smaller decrease in kinematic
viscosity with increasing temperature or in other words, the higher the VI, the more resistant to
viscosity change the oil is.

Group I, II and III are mineral oils (even if Group III oils are often considered Synthetic Hydrocarbon oils).
Group IV are synthetic hydrocarbon polyalphaolefin (PAO) oils and Group V are other synthetic oils
(i.e. polyesters, polyglycols)

4. LUBE OIL CATEGORIES (for a detailed lube oil type selection guideline refer to par. 5)

There are various available lube oil categories:

4.1. Mineral oil ISO VG 32 standard resistance to thermal degradation:

mineral oil properties according to ITN52220.02: for gas turbines with bearings ambient
temperature below 260°C and relevant driven equipment (e.g. centrifugal or axial compressors
and electric generators) with or without load gears. This category of lube oils is valid also for
expanders, electric motors and steam turbines as drivers. However, when a steam turbine is
present in combined cycle with a gas turbine, to promote oil commonality, it is recommended
to refer to par. II of the present (both for common or separate oil supply systems).

Synthetic hydrocarbon oils described at par. 4.2 have superior performance so they are for sure
acceptable also for those less severe applications where a standard resistance to thermal
degradation could be enough.

Operating conditions selection criteria:

4.1.1. Minimum ambient temperature min Tamb ≥ 0°C

4.1.2. “A n t i - w e a r ” c a t e g o r y - f o r m i n i m u m a m b i e n t t e m p e r a t u r e ≥ 0 ° C a n d i n c a s e o f a l o a d

4.1.3. “High water separability” category – for minimum ambient ≥ 0°C and in case the
driver is a steam turbine

4.1.4. “ H i g h w a t e r s e p a r a b i l i t y ” a n d “a n t i - w e a r ” c a t e g o r y - f o r m i n i m u m a m b i e n t t e m p e r a t u r e
≥ 0°C, in case the driver is a steam turbine and there is a load gear in the machinery train

4.2. Mineral or Synthetic Hydrocarbon oils ISO VG 32 high resistance to thermal degradation:

mineral oil according to ITN52220.03: for gas turbines with bearings ambient temperature
greater than 260°C and relevant driven equipment (e.g. centrifugal or axial compressors and
electric generators) with or without load gears. This category of lube oils is valid also for
steam turbines used in combined cycle with a gas turbine, both for common or separate oil
supply systems.

STANDARD PERFORMANCE:

4.2.1. Minimum ambient temperature min Tamb ≥ 0°C

4.2.2. “L o w P o u r P o i n t ” ( L P P ) c a t e g o r y – f o r m i n i m u m a m b i e n t

LOW VARNISHING (LV) PERFORMANCE:

In case we need the lowest tendency to form varnish and so the highest performance in terms
of oxidation resistance and the maximum solubility of the base oil towards thermal degradation
sub-products. The use of this kind of oil is mainly recommended for those applications where

mineral oil according to ITN52220.02 - for steam turbines, expanders and electric motors as
drivers and relevant driven equipments (e.g. centrifugal or axial compressors and electric

the driver is a gas turbine and the ambient temperature is so high that it is no possible to
maintain the lube oil header at 55°C with an air cooling system. Before taking a decision it
could be necessary to perform a rotordynamic assessment for the gas turbine.

drivers and relevant driven equipments (e.g. centrifugal or axial compressors and electric

viscosity grade category could be used also when the driver is a gas turbine and the ambient

NOTE: Service experiences with some HTS/HPC oils in GE Aviation Products have
demonstrated excessive swelling and softening of traditional AMS-R-83248 (FKM)
elastomers seals used in the lube systems. HTS/HPC oils being considered for use in
GE Aeroderivative products must be reviewed by the operator and oil supplier for
compatibility with these materials in the particular engine type, environment, and
type of service for which usage is being considered.

units in existing plants oil type shall be agreed with the customer taking into account oil
performances in the existing units.
