Grease is the word, it’s got groove it’s got meaning. Grease is an American movie classic

based in the 50’s in sunny California. The movie follows Danny Zuko played by John Travolta

and Sandy Olsson played by Olivia Newton-John. Danny a greaser and Sandy an innocent

Aussie girl spend their entire summer together at the beach, believing once the summer ends

Sandy will head by to Australia and Danny to his regular life. Unbeknownst to them, they will

reunite the coming semester at Rydell High. But something is different Danny is not the soft man

he was over the summer; Sandy is appalled by his indecent ways and Danny, the rebellious

leader of the T-Birds, feels he must maintain his hard earned reputation in front of his friends.

Joining the Pink Ladies Sandy sees Danny as he is and they each decide to change themselves to

fit the others likes.

This film represents the adolescence phase of development. Throughout this movie the

main characters face trails that provoke their perception on each other. Sandy battles changing

herself to be with the one she loves. Danny feels conflicted with holding his reputation or being

the man Sandy wants. The movie shows the dynamic of trying to fit in while also standing out. It

accurately depicts the stage of adolescence by going through the internal challenges a teenager

faces when they are in love with someone. Between then and now the social dynamic of school

hasn’t changed much, but the belief that girls must change themselves to be someone fitting for a

man has. Women today don’t do things in order to draw attention form men, rather they get

attention from men by being their authentic self. I don’t like the movie for this, in the end Sandy

decides to change her entire appearance to represent that of a greaser chic. It was great for

cinematic purposes but lacked thought in the moral department. It opens young girls to the

thought that they must change themselves in order to be what a man wants based in a time where

women mostly took care of the household. This film accurately shows the stage of a teenagers

life where they feel pressured by those around them to conform to a particular standard.
