There is no reason not to hypnotize your clients on the first meeting. Everyone can
benefit from some form of hypnosis. Putting a client into trance takes only a few
minutes and will convince the client of your skill and effectiveness, and set them up
for a successful second session. If the client clearly has come to the wrong therapist
they can still be taught self hypnosis for relaxation. If the case suggests a different
mode of therapy, then you can take them into trance and suggest that the therapy will
be successful. You can hypnotize them and ask their unconscious to allow them to
become aware of their most worrying problem. All of these will only take a few
minutes of their session and will increase your satisfaction ratings dramatically.
The opposite mistake is attempting therapy too early. Many new hypnotherapists set
themselves up with scripts and techniques and believe everything their instructors told
them. When a client arrives, as soon as they hear the words 'smoking' or 'weight loss'
or 'tired' they think they know exactly what to do and immediately apply their
standard script parrot fashion.
What they need to do instead is to learn is to listen to their clients. Really listen to
them. What the client says is the problem seldom is the actually problem. Trying to
deal with the client's issues before understanding them will seldom work. So you need
to uncover their real problem.
However, building rapport and trust takes time, and with some clients will take most
of the session. The answer in this case is use the last part of the session to teach the
client how to do self hypnosis, and show them what trance is like. Putting them into
trance has many benefits. It convinces the client that they can be hypnotized. It builds
trust. It sets up the client to go into trance faster and more reliably on the next session,
The Pretalk
Most trainers tell their students to do a 'pretalk' with every client before they attempt
any hypnosis. Advice varies, but the usual is to spend 15-20 minutes explaining
hypnosis to the client. Students are told that they must cover expectations, explain the
different states of consciousness, go through all the myths of hypnosis, and deal with
any misconceptions.
I think this is a total waste of time. I normally spend an hour and bit with each client
and I just cannot fit in a mini-seminar on hypnosis.
What the trainers seem to miss is that the client has already brought themselves to my
office are already comfortable with the idea of hypnosis. Their notions of what it is or
how it works are irrelevant, and no matter what they think as long as they are willing
to shut their eyes, there is absolutely no point in delaying things. None of my clients
need long involved instruction in what hypnosis is or what it can do for them. If they
are unsure about hypnosis I am happy to answer. Normally this takes one or two
minutes at most and we get on with the induction. After they have been hypnotized
they will know everything they need to know about it.
Grove saw the need for clean language in absolutely everything. He talks about the
need to use clean language from the moment you meet your client.
He says that the phrase 'How can I help you today?' is one of the least useful ways of
starting a session. His core idea is that the therapist should become invisible, and
allow the client to express their own feelings, memories, symbols and semantics
without any interference. If you want to learn the exact contents of the client's inner
experience, if you want to know why they smoke, then you need to avoid putting your
own assumptions in there. Asking how you can help implies that the client needs help,
and forces the client to think about what kind of help they need from the therapist, and
therefore is not clean language. In starting the therapist needs to 'slide in gently, to be
unsure and undefined' (p15)
The first question to the client is important because 'it is like the first move in chess'.
Questions are used to shape the interaction between client and therapist. The first
question should do as little as possible to influence the client's inner environment. By
asking 'and what brings you here' you imply that there is problem driving them, and
they will focus on identifying a problem for you. 'What can I do for you?' implies that
they need something from you that they do not already have. 'What seems to be the
matter?' implies that they do not know their own mind, and assumes the therapist must
have some better insight than the client has. 'What is your problem?' assumes there is
one problem. And so on.
According to Groves, the correct way to begin a session is to ask 'What is it that you
want?'. This focuses the client on the outcome they desire, and lets them respond with
an abstraction that is about their future behaviour.
Another simple technique I usually use with clients is before I start hypnotizing them
I ask them 'What are you expecting?'.
This makes sure that the client is not harbouring any unrealistic fears of going into
trance, but equally that they do not have any unrealistic expectations either.
This question lets me sort out any fears, reservations or other problems. It also usually
means I do not have to do any long pre-talk about hypnosis. If the client is
comfortable with hypnosis then there is no need to waste time explaining what it is. I
can just get on with it.
Similarly, some clients have wild ideas about what is going to happen to them. This
kind of client will be disappointed that they remembered everything and because
whatever they experienced in trace will not match whatever they were expecting they
will say that they were not hypnotized. If they believe they were not hypnotized then
the therapy I give them will be less likely to work.
So sorting out their expectations right at the beginning is good way to start.
These two simple tests are an excellent way to get your stop smoking sessions going.
One thing that Newton recommends is that as the client leaves, is to say 'Let me know
how well you are getting on'. This uses the supposition technique that they will be
doing well.
But the session isn't really ended when the client departs. What distinguishes the
average hypnotherapist from the outstanding hypnotherapist is follow up. You will
never get any better unless you can measure how well what you are doing actually
works.
Follow up simply consists of an email or phone to the client a week or ten days later
to see how they are getting on. It should be a genuine enquiry showing concern for the
client's wellbeing. Most therapists don't do this. It may be because they are afraid
they might learn that it didn't work. But without a fearless attitude to feedback it is
very difficult to improve your success rate.
I had another memorable client yesterday. She came in to stop smoking. She sat on
the chair clutching her handbag and sitting forward as if she was ready to spring out
of it. It was only with some difficulty I was able to persuade her to settle back into my
big comfortable client chair.
She sat wringing her hands, fingers constantly moving, raising her leg from the knee
now and then. She was a picture of anxiety. I said to her 'you seem a little nervous'
and she said 'No I'm not!'. I pointed out her hands were in constant motion and she
said 'I'm always like that, doesn't mean I'm nervous'. I asked her if she was the sort of
person who could relax easily. She said 'Sometimes'. I asked her if she sleep well or if
she had sleep problems - 'Sometimes'. One thing did tell me that she found it strange
that she found it difficult to sleep at night, but had no problems sleeping during the
day.
I asked her if she had ever given up smoking. She said 'no'. I asked if she had ever
tried to give up. Again 'No'. I asked her how it was that she knew that she couldn't
give up? 'I just know'. And so on. Every question I put to her was answered with one
word, or with evasion.
Eventually I gave up questioning her, mainly to preserve my own sanity. I have never
met such a negative client. She was actually making me feel bad.
So I started on the hypnosis. I suspected that this client would be resistant to losing
control, because her behaviour in the beginning of the session suggested that she was
desperately trying to keep control of everything. I suspected that she was afraid to
give up control for even a moment, and that all her answers were to protect her from
being made to give out any information that might reveal weaknesses.
I was able to put her into trance again with lots of assurances about being safe and
calm, and I carried on to deal with her smoking.
At the end of the session she said she was very pleased with the feeling of not
smoking, but would not even consider doing anything about the other thing, and still
denied that there was even anything to deal with.

The hypnotherapy scripts are arranged into groups according to their main function,
but all the scripts broken into sections so that you can mix and match sections from
different scripts and cut and paste them to create new scripts for yourself.
This means that you should examine scripts from all areas to find parts that you can
adapt when creating a treatment for any particular client.
Some of the scripts are ready to use exactly as they are. Some are edited transcripts of
hypnotherapy sessions. Every client who comes to your office is unique and therefore
you should study these transcripts to understand how the problem was tackled, and
then take sections and adapt these for your own use.
The underlying logic of the script is shown for each section and the hypnotic concept
embedded in the wording is shown in the comments column. Using these guides you
should be able to follow the logic of the scripts and use these as the basis for your
own original wording and ideas for your clients.
Each script is laid out in four columns. The first column shows the target of the hypnotic
technique being used. The second column gives the wording of the suggestion. The third
column has a code that indicates what type of suggestion is being used. The fourth column
has notes and explanations of how the particular line of the script works.

This style of Stop Smoking script use Direct Suggestion, or Authoritative Hypnosis, a
style of therapy that sounds as if you are firing instructions at the listener. Each
suggestion is a single direct command, telling the smoker how to behave, what to do,
what to be. However, Direct Suggestion is actually quite subtle and very effective.
This Stop Smoking Hypnosis Script is used after finding out why, when and where
the client smokes.
The therapist notes these and selects the matching section of the script. If weight gain
is a worry then the section on not snacking is used, otherwise not.
Most smokers need convincing that they can stop, that there will be no cravings, that
they can deal with stress without a cigarette. The script deals with all of those, and
most other common issues.
Other psychological issues should be dealt with by weaving in one or more metaphor
scripts such as Bridge to Freedom as required.
Embedded commands are bold: use analogical marking with these phrases.
You do not need to use every part of this script. Use the Interview checklists to find
out what issues the client has and address only those.

This script is the transcript of an actual stop smoking hypnosis session conducted by
David Mason.
The Stop Smoking script is given in full with comments to explain what each
statement is doing.
The client was a man in his early thirties who had been smoking for fifteen years. He
was smoking between twenty and thirty cigarettes a day. Before the hypnosis began,
information was gathered using the Smoking Resources Checklist. Information about
smoking beliefs, resources, and fears was then used to create specific suggestions
unique to this client. For example, some statements in the script refer specifically to
the health fears expressed by the client at the beginning of the session.

In order to replace the beliefs the client holds about smoking it is necessary to first
identify what those beliefs are. The checklists of questions that follow are used to
remind the therapist to cover every relevant aspect to reveal why, when and how the
client smokes. It may also identify resources the client has that can be used against the
smoking habit. These answers provide a unique set of targets and resources to use
during hypnosis.

Many clients who want to stop smoking say they could stop smoking if you could just
make it taste horrible. This Stop Smoking Aversion script uses hypnosis suggestions
to make the cigarettes taste bad. It creates aversion suggestions for all the sensations
of sight, smell, taste and texture so the smell is nauseating, the sight is
repulsive, the feel is horrible and the very idea of smoking makes you
want to vomit. Every aspect of smoking makes you want to get away from
it and stay away. The Stop Smoking Aversion script makes even the idea
of putting a cigarette in your mouth revolting.

This script is an example of using regression to stop smoking, or rather to stop a client
from starting again. The majority of clients need only one session to stop smoking but
some habits are more persistent than others. The client had been for one session to
stop smoking, along with his wife.
He and his wife both stopped smoking immediately and with no cravings or side
effects, but after four weeks or so he began to think about smoking again, and in fact
bought a pack of cigarettes and smoked some, much to his wife's dismay and anger.
After four weeks without cigarettes, all the nicotine had left his body, and all of the
possible triggers had become extinct, so the only reason he would want to smoke
again was because of an unextinguished belief about smoking.
The regression therapy was used to find, identity and then remove the unconscious
belief he had about smoking. The regression process was embedded in a long
metaphor about scoring goals consistently. The metaphor chosen used rugby because
the client was a fan, but any sport could be adapted.

You can relax the body
Hypnosis is basically a matter of relaxation. Or rather, whenever you go into
a state of deep relaxation you automatically go into a state of hypnosis. You Seeding
can go into hypnosis in other ways as well, but being relaxed is the simplest

putting the hands palm up on the arms of the chair]. Now that's not very

No.
If you were to just relax them like that, [demonstrates turning the hands over

it?

I want you to get that feeling of relaxation, that relaxed, that quickly. Just

the ceiling, find something on the ceiling behind the chair...

Put your hands the way I showed you, and now lift your toes up off the

that's a state of tension. What we are going to do is to release the tension, and
as we do you're going to go straight into hypnosis....

take another breath... and as you breath out... just allow that head to fall

People giving up smoking often show black and white thinking, that is; things are
either perfect, or they are a total failure. Oftentimes smokers have no problems in the
first week, or the first month, but then they start to feel the need again but they are
OK. Then some event happens outside their control and they immediately reach for
the cigarette. The problem isn't the cigarette. It is that the person then thinks they are a
failure, that it has all been pointless, and they are back where they started.
The fact is that they aren't - having one smoke is not a failure. It is simply a step on
the road. This metaphor should be used in the stop smoking session as a sort of post
hypnotic instruction, putting the idea in their mind that one slip is not a failure, and
they can take a lesson from that one smoke and never do it again.
This metaphor reframes taking one smoke as being something that can be expected,
unfortunate, but something to accept on the way to finally giving up smoking. Taking
one smoke, does not mean that you have failed. You have inner resources that will get
you through. The message for the smoker is that even if you fail on the way to your
goal, you get to keep what you have achieved so far. You can give up smoking.
Smoking metaphor
When I was a student, I went out one winter's afternoon and I found that my old car
wouldn't start. I had been up all night getting my thesis finished...the final part of my
degree... I had spent so long on it.... In fact I had been working on it without sleep for
days....I was exhausted. I had finished 365 pages and it was all tied up. I had to get it
into the mail before my deadline. It was very important to me. If I didn't get it right
this time....well I didn't know what would happen..... and so I reluctantly set out to
walk to the Post Office ten blocks away. The weather was terrible, it was grey and
miserable....there was slush on the roads and icy patches on the pavement. After all
my hard work it was just so unfair to be held back like this.
I started to walk very very carefully at first... being very careful where I put my feet....
and then as I got going I got more confident.... I was in a hurry to get there...I began to
pay less attention... and suddenly I found myself flat on my back... sore and bruised...
I lay there winded.... and imagined everyone laughing at me.
I felt like giving up there and then, you know? Maybe my effort wasn't all that good
anyway....I could have spent more time on it....I had no idea if it would be good
enough....maybe I was kidding myself....maybe I wasn't going to pass anyway.... at
that moment I don't know if I even wanted the degree.....I didn't know if it had been
worth all that effort....Maybe I wasn't meant to pass.... the car, the sleep.... the snow....
But as I sat there feeling stupid and sore and disappointed and wondering what the
point was, I saw myself reflected in a shop window. I saw myself sitting there in the
snow and slush looking ridiculous. I looked so silly, I began to laugh. And the people
passing by began to laugh with me... and two of them, total strangers, helped me up.
And they didn't know it, but inside I was still laughing. Because I had seen something
else reflected in that shop window. I had caught a glimpse of how far I had come. I
I had slipped and fallen quite badly... I had hurt myself....I had been laughed at....but I
could laugh at myself. You can always laugh at yourself, can't you? Looking back at
it,.... I had actually made a lot of progress along the road. Maybe I was unrealistic,
maybe I was trying too hard....but I realised that when you slip, you never slip all the
way back to the beginning. My fall was only an interruption.... I was still on my way
to the Post Office. It was a slip, it wasn't the end of the journey, but it wasn't the
beginning either. You get to keep what you have achieved so far, don't you?. The
distance I had covered was still there, and all the progress I had made still counted. I
could see where I was going.
So I rubbed my sore back, decided to pay more attention to bad patches in future and I
went on.... bruised and embarrassed, but proud of what I had achieved... and knowing
that I had learned something.... about myself... and about what I can do.

Many clients who want to stop smoking say they need some motivation to
get through the first few weeks. This Stop Smoking Motivation script
uses an usual effect, a story based on a woman going to consult a
hypnotist. That then leads to a magic place from childhood where the
reason for smoking is discovered and thrown away.
Then a second metaphor is used to create self esteem, to reverse any problems from
childhood that might be preventing stopping smoking. This returns to the first
metaphor of getting rid of the problem and reinforces it.
Finally the session finishes with a direct suggestion self esteem section.

Many people want to stop smoking but are convinced that they won't be able to. In
most cases it is this belief that stops people stopping. If they believe it, then they
either won't try, or they will abandon their attempts to give up at the first tiny setback.
This will just confirm their belief and make it stronger.
This script is aimed at altering that belief. It does it by making the person aware of
other strong beliefs that they have had, and how these were changed once they
realized that the belief was not true. Hypnosis is an excellent way to get people to
totally change their belief in their own ability to stop smoking.

It is a good induction to use because even before your therapy to stop smoking begins
you are suggesting clear breath, giving affirmations of 'no more smoking',
visualizations of leaving behind the old habit and going to a clean green place as a
non smoker.

The Break the Cycle hypnosis script is used as part of a hypnosis session to reinforce
earlier hypnotherapy suggestions, and to get the client to visualize making a public
commitment to the change they want. Breaking the Cycle lets them be proud of that
change, to commit to change in front of others.
Use the Breaking the Cycle script after a series of hypnotic suggestions to get the
client to own the change, to make a public declaration that the change has been made
and there is no going back. You suggest that the client has something new, some
power, etc. and they use that as their power to change.
The script uses Ericksonian techniques in the form of suggestions embedded in
quotations and metaphor to make a connection between past effects and present
behavior, and enables them to break out of the cycle of behavior.

Self Hypnosis is simple and easy. This exercise shows you how to put yourself into
trance, anywhere, anytime. You can use it to go to sleep, or you can use it to allow
your mind to roam free. Self hypnosis can be very liberating. Many people feel a
spirituality, a deep connection with something when they go into trance. Everyone's
experience is unique.
Allow yourself to go into trance naturally and easily, and enjoy the experience. Then
practice it on your own whenever you can. Eventually, after some practice, you will
be able to slip into trance just by willing it.
These are documents you send to the client before the session. It helps to clear up any
misconceptions about hypnosis and the session you will have with them.
They are also useful to hand out if you are giving a talk or presentation to a group.
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic application of hypnosis. It is a powerful form of
communication that uses psychological procedures to generate healing and change.
The medical use of hypnosis began thousands of years ago, and the hypnotic trance
has been used ever since in many different forms.
We all experience trance every day in various forms: if you have ever driven home
and not remembered how you got there, or if you have been so absorbed in a book,
movie or computer game that you lost track of time, you were in trance. Trance is
natural and normal and everyone can do it.
In trance, you are able to communicate with your inner mind directly. That is how the
changes get made. A good hypnotist will take you into trance gently and
imperceptibly, and in the same way that you can’t tell exactly when you cross over
into sleep at night, the crossover into trance is subtle and goes unnoticed. Once in
trance the therapist will begin to get you to work with your inner mind.
Hypnotherapy is nothing like stage hypnosis. Part of your mind remains alert and you
are in charge the whole time. You will not be asked to do anything you wouldn’t feel
comfortable with.
Will I lose control?
Movies and promoters of stage hypnotists have built up a myth about mind control.
The opposite is actually true: you need to be in control in order to let go. You can
choose to accept the suggestions, but you can also choose not to. Should you feel
uncomfortable with the process, you can stop it at any time.
Will I say things I will regret?
You won’t be giving away any secrets. You are in control of what you say at all times.
And you won’t be doing anything you don’t remember. Trance is a special state so
remembering the things that were talked about in trance is sometimes difficult once
you are outside trance. However, if you think it might be an issue for you then ask for
special suggestions to be given to remember everything that went on in the session.
Will I fall asleep?
Hypnosis is not sleep. Natural sleep is measurably different from hypnotic trance.
However, trance usually involves deep relaxation, so people don’t move much.
Hypnotised people might look as they are asleep, but they only deeply relaxed.
What if I can’t be hypnotised?
Everyone can be hypnotised. In fact the more intelligent the person is, the easier it is
to hypnotise them. Modern induction methods are fast and reliable – no swinging
watches, no staring eyes, just a gentle voice guiding you into a relaxing trance.
Hypnotherapy Techniques
Hypnotherapists use a mixture of techniques to suit the individual. The therapist will
not usually offer any sort of diagnosis. Hypnotherapists act on the principle that your
problems arise because for various reasons unique to you, you have acquired a poorly
fitting model of the world, and hold self limiting beliefs about your own skills and
abilities. Hypnotherapy clears those self-limiting beliefs so that you can get on with
your life the way that you were supposed to. Everyone already has everything they
need to get on with their life, they just need a bit of help in finding those resources.
These are some of the therapeutic approaches used in hypnotherapy:
Hypnotherapy can be a valuable part of a balanced health program. If you think you
might have some issue that needs to be addressed, give me a call. I look forward to
meeting you.
A session usually takes about an hour and a half. The session starts with you
describing in detail what it is you want to change. I will clarify some points and make
sure I understand what I need to do. Then I'll explain hypnosis, what it can and can't
do, and after discussing various approaches, we'll agree on how to proceed.
Normally I will then begin the induction and guide you to into a gentle hypnotic
trance. Everyone can go into trance. You don't have to know anything, you can't do
anything wrong, it doesn't depend on any special skill you have to have. All you have
to do is relax and focus on your breathing. I do everything else.
You will not experience mental fireworks or get touched by some cosmic energy.
What you will feel is amazingly relaxed, you will feel totally detached, that nothing
really matters right now, that you could do anything you wanted but you can't be
bothered, that you just want to go on lying there and enjoying this amazing feeling. At
the end of the session you will feel deeply relaxed and refreshed.
Although you are deeply relaxed you are actively involved in the process at every
stage. In hypnotherapy you are not a passive observer, you are always aware of what
is going on and following what I am saying, and actively working with me.
I might ask you at various points to open your eyes, to move a hand or to speak to me.
These tasks are all designed to let me know how you are progressing, and to let you
know that things are going smoothly. You will not go to sleep. I will make sure that
you do not get so relaxed that you go to sleep - I need you to be able to communicate
with me all the time.
Once you have reached the level of trance that's right for you, I will begin the process
of helping you to make the changes you want. I will usually start by gently taking you
to a place where you can feel safe, warm and content. From there I will possibly take
you on a guided journey where you overcome obstacles, meet wise leaders, or interact
At the end of the session I will guide you out of trance again. You will come out of
trance feeling refreshed and alert. Most people feel as if they have just wakened from
a long nap, and feel really relaxed. Most people find the whole experience very
enjoyable.
Sometimes you will have to return for another session if what you want changed
cannot all be done in one day but you can expect to get a major change after the first
session.
Types of Therapy
I mainly work with hypnosis but I also use other techniques. Sometimes I do not use
hypnosis at all, depending on the problem. Some people feel more comfortable with
one approach rather than another, and some problems are easier to solve using one
particular therapy style, so I use the style best suited to each client. Each session is
carefully designed to match your individual needs and the most effective approach
may combine one or more therapies. The main thing is to find the right way to get the
result you want.
Being happier doesn't have to be a long-term ambition. You can start right now. In the
next 30 minutes, tackle as many of the following suggestions as possible. Not only
will these tasks themselves increase your happiness, but the mere fact that you've
achieved some concrete goals will boost your mood.
1. Raise your activity level to pump up your energy. If you're on the phone, stand up
and pace. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Put more energy into your voice.
Take a brisk 10-minute walk. Even better...
2. Take a walk outside. Research suggests that light stimulates brain chemicals that
improve mood. For an extra boost, get your sunlight first thing in the morning.
3. Reach out. Send an e-mail to a friend you haven't seen in a while, or reach out to
someone new. Having close bonds with other people is one of the most important
keys to happiness. When you act in a friendly way, not only will others feel more
friendly toward you, but you'll also strengthen your feelings of friendliness for other
people.
4. Rid yourself of a nagging task. Deal with that insurance problem, purchase
something you need, or make that long-postponed appointment with the dentist.
Crossing an irksome chore off your to-do list will give you a rush of elation.
6. Do a good deed. Introduce two people by e-mail, take a minute to pass along useful
information, or deliver some gratifying praise. In fact, you can also...
7. Save someone's life. Sign up to be an organ donor, and remember to tell your
family about your decision. Do good, feel good―it really works!
8. Act happy. Fake it 'til you feel it. Research shows that even an artificially induced
smile boosts your mood. And if you're smiling, other people will perceive you as
being friendlier and more approachable.
9. Learn something new. Think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and
spend 15 minutes on the Internet reading about it, or go to a bookstore and buy a book
about it. But be honest! Pick a topic that really interests you, not something you think
you "should" or "need to" learn about.
Some people worry that wanting to be happier is a selfish goal, but in fact, research
shows that happier people are more sociable, likable, healthy, and productive―and

In 2009 scientists found the DNA code for lung cancer. It has more than 23,000
errors largely triggered by cigarette smoke exposure. From this, the experts estimate
a typical smoker acquires one new mutation for every 15 cigarettes they smoke.
Although many of these mutations will be harmless, some will trigger cancer.
It's never too late to stop smoking. Studies show that provided a person stops, even
after 20 to 25 years of smoking, their chances of developing lung cancer are actually
quite low. The body begins to heal within minutes of the last cigarette. Most people

The therapist would not normally ask all these questions directly. Most of the

The check list is just to ensure that no potentially useful areas are missed.
As well as being a source of resources for the therapist, the constant reiteration of
'How will you stop, when will you stop, what will people think when you stop' etc.
The New Behaviour section is important. Most clients have no clear idea of what life
would be like after they give up. The literally cannot imagine it. They are unlikely to
offer this information unprompted, so any time spent in this section will put positive
images into their mind that can be used as a resource once the session starts.
