INTRODUCTION

This study aimed to determine the factors of alcohol consumption among

Senior High students. Alcohol or Alcoholism is also known and called as “Alcohol

Dependence” and is considered a disease with symptoms such as craving or feeling a

strong urge to drink; loss of control or not being able to stop once started; physical

dependence such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety; and tolerance or

drinking greater amounts of alcohol to “get high” (National Institution on Alcohol Abuse

and Alcoholism` 2006). According to the World Health Organization, alcohol

consumption is a causal factor in more than 200 disease and injury conditions.

According to (`What is Chemical Dependency?`2005) Alcoholism takes time to develop,

but once it was developed, it does not go away. Drinking alcohol is associated with a

risk of developing health problems such as mental and behavioral disorders, including

alcohol dependence, major noncommunicable diseases such as liver cirrhosis, some

cancers and cardiovascular diseases, as well as injuries resulting from violence and

road clashes and collisions (Newes – Adeyi, Chen, Williams, & Faden, 2007). In the

U.S, one in four individuals between the ages of 12 and 20 drinks alcohol on a monthly

basis, and a similar proportion of 12 th graders consumes five or more drinks in a row at

least once every two weeks. According to (DOC) The effect of alcoholism toward

Academic Performance, aside from health risk, students who drink too much alcohol

may also be damaging their academic performances. In student’s alcohol may not just

lead them to some illness but also it will result in falling grades because drinking has a

serious noticeable effect on your memory, it can also cause you to lose sleep or even
get a poor-quality sleep. (How to teach… Alcohol awareness) Make it clear that alcohol

in itself isn’t bad; it’s overconsumption that causes problems.

Those persons who suffer from depression, bipolar disorder, and social

anxiety are much more likely to develop alcoholism, this person who has psychological

conditions. Students from junior high to 12 th grade even those who were already at their

20s are more likely to develop alcoholism, many individuals with psychological illnesses

turn to alcohol as a method of coping with their illness others also drink alcohol to ease

the pain, but in reality, it would not fix anything it is just an illusion alcohol makes you

experience different level of happiness but it would not help you to solve your problems.

For example, a person who got into a breakup and also depressed claimed that alcohol

elevates their mood; people who has a lot of problem in their families, friends or in their

relationship drink alcohol because they claimed that alcohol can ease the pain that they

felt it makes them get high and forgot their problems others stated that alcohol brings

them into a different world, gives them happiness and some claimed that alcohol satisfy

them. Based on Addiction Center, here are some known specific risk factors

experiencing peer pressure to drink, especially as a young adult, having low self-esteem

or self-worth, experiencing high levels of stress and a lot more risk factors that make an

individual getting engage with alcohol. A lot of people think that alcoholism is a disease

but according to the statement (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism)

explains that it can be strong as the need of food and water it is a craving that an

alcoholic person feels and despite serious family situation or even serious health

condition an alcoholic person will continue to drink. When a person engaged in alcohol

especially students it will be hard for them to get rid of alcohol into their lifestyle some
individuals claimed that they will get sick if they don’t drink alcohol; However, others

claimed they felt weak without alcohol. Students sometimes encourage to drink because

some of them think that alcohol makes it easier to meet other people, relaxes their

social inhibitions, and have more fun. According to ScienceDaily, most high school

seniors drink they were curious they want to experiment with alcohol, others drink for

the thrill and others because it helps them relax.
