RECTIFICATION WITH DIRECT STEAM INJECTION

➢ The steam is injected as small bubbles into the liquid in the tower bottom.
➢ The reboiler exchanger is not needed.
➢ Used when an aqueous solution of more volatile component and water is being distilled
➢ The advantage of open steam lies in simpler construction of heater, which is a sparger.

For Stripping Line Equation:

S
TMB : Lm + S = Vm+1 + B

CMB: Lm Xm + S(0) = Vm+1ym+1 + BXB

REARRANGING: B, XB
𝐿𝑚 BXB
ym+1 = 𝑋𝑚 −
Vm+1 Vm+1

For Saturated Steam Entering:

S = Vm+1 ; Lm = B

Therefore: ym+1 = 𝑋𝑚 −
