Steel Wool Lab

The steel wool experiment involved placing steel wool in a cup of vinegar. Over time, the steel wool oxidized and rusted, changing color from grey to orange and gaining weight due to reacting with oxygen in the air. The steel wool generated heat during this chemical reaction as it converted to iron oxide, demonstrating it was an exothermic process.

2. The steel wool in the cup looked orange, while the steel wool that was never used looked grey

and looked like new steel. The wool in the cup smelled very bad because of the vinegar, while

the unused wool smelled fine. Finally, the wool in the cup was rusted and had a rougher texture

than the unused wool, which was smoother and shiny.

3. The steel wool weighed 5.47 g before, and 7.39 g after. The wool gained 1.92 grams.
4. They do not disprove this law because the weight that the wool gained came from the vinegar

and oxygen around it.

5. I think the wool got oxygenized and gained weight from the oxygen.

6. This is an exothermic experiment because the temperature of the cup went up because the

wool was generating heat.

7. It was a chemical reaction because it created new matter (iron oxide.) The process was not

easily reversible. There was a significant change in color and smell.
