WORK PROCEDURE AND CONTROL MEASURES
The work will be supervised and monitored at all times by a competent site / task specific supervisor. All works to be
carried out in accordance to the risk assessments, manufacturing phase plan in place and other H&S management
documents in place. Risk assessments to be completed for all site activities and appropriate control measures agreed
and adhered to.

Appropriate signage will be suitably displayed around the work area. PPE to be worn at all times on activities process.

Substitution—minimise the risk by substituting or replacing a hazard or hazardous work practice with something that
gives rise to a lesser risk. For example using a:

• Water-based paint instead of an organic solvent based coating

• Brush or roller instead of a spray gun
• Triglycidyl Isocyanurate (TGIC) - free powder coating
• High volume low pressure (HVLP) sprayer rather than an airless sprayer, or
• Low hazard cleaning solvent.

Minimise the risk by isolating or separating the hazard or hazardous work practice from any person exposed to it. For
example, conducting spray painting in a spray booth to isolate workers from airborne contaminants.

Engineering controls—engineering controls are physical control measures to minimise risk. For example, using
ventilation systems to reduce exposure to vapours and aerosols.
1. TRAINING
• Only qualified / certified or otherwise competent personnel will be permitted to undertake the work.
• All operatives are to receive training on manual handling techniques.
• Tool box talks will be carried out at daily intervals during the works to raise awareness of relevant H&S issues.
2. ACCESS
• Work area access will be via only allow entrance to provide a separate operative entrance point and minimise
disruption and promote segregation of the others activities.
• Any equipment used will be securely stored at the end of each shift to prevent unauthorised use.
• Exclusion zones will be established in the area below any overhead works, using suitable barriers and signage,
to protect people below from risk of any falling tools or materials.
3. PREPARATION
• Secure barricade or other suitable hoarding will be erected to the work area boundaries from any
unauthorized entry by others personnel during progress work ongoing.
• All workers and authorised person will be required to sign in with the HSE manager/Safety Supervisor and
undertake a site induction.

5. MATERIALS
• Wood, Plywood with Polychem, Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) & Wall Surface.
6. MACHINERY AND EQUIPMENT
• Spray gun, spray strip, air filter, compressor machine, ventilation equipment, paint Brush/Roller, masking tape,
thinner/turbine, sand paper : as applicable
7. PREPARATORY WORKS
A. Wood & Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) Work
• Surface must be clean with solvent to remove oil and grease.
• The surface will be cleared to remove dirt, grease, rubbed down, sanded smooth surface. Knots in woodwork
will be treated with a solution of shellac to prevent bleeding. Large or loose knots will be cut out and
replaced with sound wood or cut back and the surface made good with fillers.
• Treated surface must be coated with compatible primer (zinc rich primer) immediately.
• Lightly sand shop prime painted surface to receive paint finish.
• 1 Coat sealer and 2 coats finishing paint to ensure. (Curing time is approximate. For sealer must exceed 24
hours)
• The viscosity of paint will take into consideration the uniform thicknesses, free of runs, bubbles, dry
overspray, cracking and other imperfections.
• Fill expose finished nail holes and cracks with matching colour filler after primer is applied.
• Sand filler smooth to ensure level adjacent surface.
• Apply approved finishes
B. Wall Surfaces
• Surface must be clean with solvent to remove oil and grease.
• The surface will be cleared to remove dirt, grease, rubbed down, sanded smooth surface.
• Lightly sand shop prime painted surface to receive paint finish.
• 1 Coat sealer and 2 coats finishing paint to ensure. (Curing time is approximate. For sealer must exceed 24
hours)

8. LIFTING OPERATIONS
• Lifting plan to be completed for all lifting operations involved with the task.
• Damaged equipment is to be taken out of use immediately.
• Equipment is to be of the correct length(s) and have sufficient safe working load capacity for the task.
• All persons involved in any lifting operations to be competent for the task they are to carry out.
• Where manual handling is required this will be supported by lifting gear and sufficient personnel must be
allocated to the work.
9. OCCUPIED PREMISES
• Work will be planned to ensure the safety of site occupants, physical barriers and signage will be in place to
make workshop occupants aware of any hazards or risks, and additional monitoring will be in place to protect
users of the manufacturing
• Dust, noise and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum. The safety of manufacturing occupants will be
assessed, particularly access and escape routes.
• Adequate warning signs and barriers will be put in place around the work area.
10. HOUSEKEEPING
• All good practise guidelines regarding housekeeping in the workplace will be observed.
• All spillages will be immediately cleaned up so as to prevent any slip hazards.
• All work equipment, chemicals and substances will be properly secured when they are not in use, so as to
prevent any unauthorised usage or accidental contact.
• During the works, the area will, so far as is reasonably practicable, be kept clean and tidy with clear walkways
as appropriate.
11. WORK SPACE
• All good practise guidelines regarding the provision of sufficient clear working space will be observed.
• Prior to the commencement of any works, sufficient clear working space (taking into account the nature of
the work, the location in which the work is to be undertaken and the needs of any other workshop /
manufacturing occupants) will be made available, so far as is reasonably practicable.
• Suitable warning signage and barriers (as appropriate) shall be positioned around the work area, so as to
restrict other persons from entering said area.
• During the works, attention will be paid at all times to the maintenance of a clear working space.
• If during the works, the maintenance of a clear working space is impracticable, the person undertaking the
work will liaise with the head management / principal supplier with a view to resolving the issue.
12. MANUAL HANDLING
• All manual handling will be minimised through the provision of mechanical aids where practicable. Where
possible materials will be supplied in loads under 25kg.
• Operatives are not expected to handle any loads or items weighing more than 25 kg on the site without
suitable assistance.
• Deliveries and materials handling will be planned to minimise the extent of manual handling of materials.
Routes by which materials have to be carried by hand will be checked for, and kept free of, obstructions.
Appropriate PPE will be worn to make sure that materials can be handled safely, e.g. gloves and safety
footwear.
• Two or more operatives will carry larger or heavier items.

Supervisory The works are to be supervised at all times.

Arrangements
First Aid & Welfare • Qualified first aider and first aid kit on site at all times.
Provision • Temporary welfare facilities to be provided –Workshop Office
• Operatives must not eat or smoke in the work area.
• Welfare facilities, including rest areas and toilet facilities, will be left as they were
found in a clean and tidy manner, and operatives are to ensure that they are
reasonably clean and tidy before entering premises.
