Topic: What kind of leadership qualities a student need in existing

educational standards.

Introduction
“In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous,
skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.”

(Former U.S. President Harry Truman)

A student leader is any student who takes on the responsibility of spreading knowledge through

inspiration, tutoring, campaigns etc. A student leader strives to change the world by starting with
their own community.

Student leaders need to take time to develop and polish speaking skills. Listening is an essential
part of communication and a good leader knows how to listen well when communicating with
others.

Student Leadership Qualities

Positive leaders leave a lasting impression on the members of their organization. They are
notable for their strength of character and integrity, and have a variety of qualities. There are
following leadership qualities which student must possess.

 Self Confidence: A student leader must be self confident as confidence is the basic
requirement in sharing ideas as well as in communication. Be confident in your
thoughts. Student must ensure that he have abilities to work and lead others through
actions without feeling any kind of hesitation So, don’t get fear in expressing yourself.
Moreover, self-confidence and calm can help others feel more certain that they, too,
can overcome hurdles or reach a challenging goal.

 Goal oriented: Student leaders need to understand the lesson objective. The very
essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. Whenever you get opportunity to
lead others identify the goals or set the vision in your mind. Nothing is done without
any purpose. Be clear in vision and make realistic vision that can be attain with
possible strategies. For example in making Pakistan our leaders had vision that they
need Islamic Democratic State where Muslims have freedom in following Islamic
rules.

 Honesty: Honest student leaders are committed to doing their work ethically. The
rest of the class knows they can trust this student, either in personal relations or when
working on group assignments. If someone in the class does try to cheat, this leader
will call them out on it or, at the very least, refuse to go along with it. So, honesty is
the requirement to become effective leader. For example, Our Prophet(Peace Be Upon
Him) was famous for his honesty therefore people gave him title of “Sadiq and
Ameen”. Non –Muslims also had trust on him and they often give their money our
Prophet as ‘Ammant’.

 Humility: When you’re willing to share credit with others, and you’re willing to admit
that you’re not perfect, others see that and appreciate it. Don’t devalue your
members .Tell them their weaknesses with positive remarks and appreciate their strong
areas. Guide your members in proper manner and behave like friend with them. Our
behavior shows our training and education so, take care of self- respect of all
members. Your positive attitude gives them confidence and they put their best efforts
in work.

 Sense of humor:  Your ability to make people laugh can help others feel comfortable
and relieve tense situations

 Emotional intelligence. A solid leader exhibits empathy towards

others, has a good understanding of emotions – both others’ and their
own – and recognizes that their own mood can have an effect on the
entire organization’s performance.

 Flexibility and adaptability. A leader can bring about change… so

it follows that he or she must also be ready and willing to adjust to
different settings and situations.

 Internal locus of control: Strong leaders take responsibility for

events and believe that they can have an effect on outcomes and
conditions.

 Courage:  Willingness to take risks on new ideas may put you “out
there” for criticism and blame but it also carries the reward of bringing
new ideas to fruition.
 Good listener: Student leaders care about and listen to the thoughts and concerns
of others in their group. Whereas some students may only feign interest in others’
problems, a good student leader is likely to show a genuine interest in and desire to help
others. In group work, they’re also more receptive of others’ feedback and willing to
compromise.

 Good decision making: Student leaders evaluate a given situation and come to a well-
reasoned conclusion about the best course of action. Ultimately, good decision-making
stems from a high sense of responsibility, a strong sense of direction, and the ability to
think quickly even under pressure. “The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the
rest is merely tenacity.” (Amelia Earhart)

 Responsible: If something goes wrong, student leaders do not pass the blame or make
excuses but take responsibility for their part. Then, they learn from it, do what’s needed
to correct what went wrong, and keep moving forward. When it comes to success, these
leaders are likely to be humble and recognize the efforts of their group and not just their
own. So student must be responsible for any loss. “Leadership consists of nothing but
taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit
for everything that goes well.”(Former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower)

Conclusion: A leader must be patient in all matters. Leader should transfer his qualities
to others and give respect to others. Should stay positive and don’t make things difficult
and make things easy for his team members. Be sincere and take views of others in
decision making. Set examples for other students.
