2 SCOPE
The test procedure guides the EQA engineer in carrying out winding resistance measurement for
inductive winding of Generator, Motor, or Power Transformer.

3. INPUTS
Sr. No. Activity / Documents
3.1 Supply Requirements:
1. 1, 230 V, 50 Hz with switch facility rated at least 15A.
3.2 Instrument Requirements:
1. Digital low resistance ohm meter exclusive for inductive winding .

4. REFERENCE :
4.1 Manufacturer manual.
4.2 Earlier Test record.

5. CIRCUIT DIAGRM - (Refer enclosed figure-A)

6. PREREQUISITES
Sr. No. Activity
6.1 Ensure that the equipment under test is de-energised. For system equipment, ensure that the
maintenance engineer has taken the necessary permits and isolated the transformer.
6.2 Ensure that no parallel circuits are connected to the equipment under test and there are no
shorts. In the case of neutral grounded equipment, ensure disconnection of neutral if testing
is carried with scope DLRO ,for Biddle DLRO neutral disconnection is not required.
Ensure proper polarity of current and of potential leads.
Ensure disconnection of power cable to equipment before carrying the test.
(In some cases if the terminal box is compound filled or difficult to open or requires lot of
re-insulation after measurement, the resistance measurement can be done along with the
cables from the SWGR end ).
6.3 Interconnecting Transformers of Gas Insulated Sub-stations with SF6 to oil bushings are
tested through earth switches (QE3). In such cases, ensure that the earth switches are closed
and earthing strips removed.
6.4 Ensure the terminals are properly cleaned. Ensure current terminal is clamped properly.
Avoid potential leads connection on clamp bolts.

Ensure potential leads are connected as close as possible to equipment terminal.

6.5 Ensure that the DC current passed while measuring winding resistance is less than 10 % of
rated AC current.
6.6 If Induction is high, ensure that corresponding secondary wdg is shorted through switch
while testing form primary side and vice-versa.
6.7 Ensure ,while carrying out winding resistance measurement with Biddle DLRO
measurement switch shall be switched ON only when the LCD display is very close to
Zero.(current dropped to Zero)
6.8 Ensure that the winding is Discharged before carrying out or repeating the test.
6.9 Since winding resistance is dc test it magnetises the core, hence should be carried out last
followed by short circuit impedance test ( if scheduled) or transformer HV to be energised
from 3Ø 415 Vac with LV shorted to de-magnetise the core.
6.10 Ensure for OLTC winding resistance measurement (commissioning),tap changer to be
operated ( over its entire range, mechanically or electrically ) at least once prior to the test.

7. ACTIVITIES
Sr. No. Activity / Documents
7.1 Make and confirm the circuit connections as in figure-A.
7.2 Note down the winding temperature.
7.3 Switch on the ac supply to DLRO , Select proper range before switching on measurement
switch .
7.4 Record the winding resistance and convert resistance to 75 deg C.
R (234.5  75)
R75  t
( 234.5  t )
where Rt is the resistance measured at temperature tC.
7.5 Repeat the test on other phases and at other taps as required.
7.6 Discharge the winding after the test.

8. RECORDS
Sr. No. Activity / Documents
8.1 Relevant portion of test formats: EQA-FM-TR, EQA-FM-GR, EQA-FM-MO.

9. LIMITS
Sr. No. Activity / Documents
9.1 Deviation between phases:   2%.
Deviation with factory value (after temperature corrections):  3%.

10. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS WHEN DEVIATIONS ARE BEYOND LIMITS

10.1 The Engineer shall repeat the test and confirm test results.
10.2 The Engineer shall convey the deviations to SH/AGM/DGM.
10.3 With the concurrence of DGM the engineer/SH shall instruct the EMD to rectify the defect..
10.4 The Engineer shall carry out the test after the defect is attended .
