1. Introduction.........................................................................................................................................4
A simple roller element bearings have hardened steel balls or roller (rolling element) captured between
hardened raceways. The key characteristic of roller element bearing is a very low friction compare to
sliding or plain bearings. Depending on their design, rolling element bearing can support radial, thrust or
combination of those loads.
The purpose of these experiments is to observe the effect of static and dynamic loading on bearings
vibration response and useful life. For static load modeling, weight of the test apparatus has been used as
applied load. For dynamic load modeling, Force due to unbalancing mass applied to the apparatus has
been used. In addition simple mathematical models has been used to Calculate useful life of bearing and
vibrational acceleration and results have been verified by experiments.
Unbalance mass
The weight of the all critical components has been calculated from their volume and density. The material
of components is AISI 1020 Carbon steel. The relevant physical and mechanical properties has been
given in Table 1 . The Calculation of Weight is as follow;
π
Volume= (outer diameter−inner diameter)2 x length of part
4
The calculations have been tabulated in Table 2, in metric and imperial units, as per breakdown of parts
by letter given in Figure 2;
The static load due to weight of apparatus on the Test Bearing has been calculated by assuming the test
apparatus as simply supported beam with supports at SP and TB as per Drawing. The overhung weight to
the left side of apparatus is also included.
To determine the load on Teat Bearing, we take the moment of all the components about the starting point
as shown in Figure 2.
The above results have been verified by the solving the analytical model of test bed on BEAMAX, results
of which have been summarized in Figure 3
From Figure 3
Reaction Force at Test Bed = 0.180 – (-0.140) = 0.320 kN = 320 N
Dynamic forces imparted to the bearing test bed due to unbalance masses m1 (1 lbm) and m2 (1 lbm) has
been calculated by taking the moment about starting point as follow;
( m1 r 1 l 1 +m2 r 2 l2 ) ω2
F dynamic .TB =
l TB
Where,
Unbalance mass 1 = m1 = 1lb
Unbalance mass 2 = m2 =1 lb
Unbalance 1 Moment Arm = l1 =12.25 in
Unbalance 2 Moment Arm = l2 = 34.5 in
Unbalance 1 Radius = r1 = 5.25 in
Unbalance 2 Radius = r2 = 5.25 in
Reaction Force Moment Arm = lTB = 27 in

Useful remaining life of bearing with 95% reliability (L5) has been calculated from equation given below;
n = 3 for ball bearing and n = 10/3 for roller bearing. Rest of bearing data for our calculation is
summarized in table below;
L5 for different speeds have been calculated and tabulated in Table below
