1. What are the effects of any natural disaster?
Ans. a) Disasters can disturb the day to day life completely.
b) Normal food and water supplies get seriously affected.
c) People become homeless.
d) There is huge destruction of life and property.
2. Define an Epicentre.
Ans. An epicentre is the place above the source of an earthquake, from where the earthquake travels.
3. When and where the major earthquake occurred in India?
Ans. a) A major earthquake occurred in Bhuj, in Gujarat on 26 January 2001.
b) Over 20,000 people lost their lives and more than 15 lakh got injured.
4. What is a Richter’s scale?
Ans. Richter’s scale is an instrument used to measure the intensity (strength) of an earthquake.
5. What is Tsunami?
Ans. Tsunami are huge waves created by underwater earthquake.
b) The waves can be as high as 100 feet.
c) These waves travel in every direction.
6. What are the effects of Tsunami?
Ans. Tsunami cause huge destruction near the seashore.

Ans. Precautions to be taken during Tsunami are:

8. What do you mean by drought?
Ans. a) A drought is a long period of very dry weather.

Answer the following:
1) How human beings are responsible for changing climate?
Ans. People are cutting down forests to build houses and factories, polluting the air and water (smoke from factories
and vehicles), and dumping wastes in water bodies which causes change in the climate.
2) Why the earth is getting warmer?
Ans. The earth is getting warmer due to burning of fossil fuels.
3) What is the main cause of climate change?
Ans. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
b) These gases are causing the earth to get warmer.
This is the main cause of climate change.
4) How global warming will cause changes in the future?
Ans. The global warming will cause changes like higher temperature, more droughts, melting glaciers, warmer
oceans, rising sea level.
5) What is Ozone layer?
Ans. Ozone layer is the protective layer (band) in the upper atmosphere.
b) It protect us from the harmful ultraviolet rays coming from the sun.
7) What is air pollution?
Ans. Air pollution means contamination of air with harmful gases and particles.
6) What can we all contribute to reduce the Global Climatic Change?
Ans. We can reduce the Global Climatic Change if we:
a) Save energy.
b) Save water.
c) Reduce the use of vehicles.
d) Never burn household wastes.
e) Reduce, reuse, recycle.
f) Do not smoke at public places.
