Experiment No.1

Object:- To determine the aggregate impact value of coarse aggregates.

Apparatus:-
1) An impact testing machine with a detachable cylindrical steel cup of internal diameter 10.2cm
and depth 5cm along with hammer weighing 14.0kg and means for raising the hammer and
allow it to fall freely between the vertical guides from a height of 38cm on the test sample in
the cup.
2) Sieves: The IS sieves of size 12.5mm, 10mm and 2.36mm
3) Measure: A cylindrical measure, internal diameter 7.5cm and depth 5cm
4) Tamping Rod: A straight metal tamping rod of circular cross section 10mm in diameter,
230mm long rounded at one end.
5) Balance of capacity not less than 500g to weight accurately to 0.1g
6) Oven etc.

Procedure:-
1) The test sample consists of aggregate passing 12.5mm IS sieve and retained on 10mm IS sieve.
It is dried in an oven for a period of 4 hours at 100oC to 110oC.
2) The measure is filled about one third full with aggregate and tamped with tamping rod with 25
strokes. More quantity of aggregate is added up to 2/3 and again tamped with 25 strokes of
tamping rod. The measure is now filled with the aggregate to overflow and tamped 25 times.
The surplus aggregate is struck off using tamping rod as a straight edge. The net weight of the
aggregate is determined to the nearest gram and it is denoted as (weight A) and this weight of
aggregate shall be used for the duplicate test on the same material.

3) The cup is fixed firmly in position on the base of the machine and whole of the sample
transferred and compacted by a single tamping of 25 strokes of the tamping rod.
4) The hammer is raised until its lower face is 38cm above the upper surface of the aggregates in
the cup and allowed to fall freely on to the aggregates. The test sample is subjected to a total o
15 such blows.
5) The crushed aggregates is removed from the cup and whole of it is sieved on the 2.36mm IS
Sieve and washed with water till no further amount passes. The fraction retained on the sieve is
dried in an oven to the constant temperature at 105oC to 110oC and weighed and denoted as
(weight B)
6) The fraction retained on the sieve (weight B) is subtracted fro the weight of the original oven
dried sample (weight A). The resultant weight (weight A- weight B) represents the fraction
passing 2.36mm IS sieve (weight C)
Calculations:
Aggregate impact value = (C/A) x 100
Where C= wt. of the fraction passing 2.36mm IS sieve
A= Wt. of the original oven dried sample
Result:
Aggregate impact value of the given sample is-----------------%
