Atlantic Ice Pvt. Ltd is one of the largest suppliers of packaged drinking water all over India. Its plant is in
Dinjong having 1500 employees. However, due to the advent of demonetization and GST, the plant had
to cut down production which was proving detrimental to the business, forcing them to lay off workers
and ultimately leading to the shutdown of major lines. The remaining workers were forced to work extra
shifts and weren’t even able to avail their compensatory leaves leading to a lot of resentment amongst
them. The workers union was already at odds with the management and an incident between Bhanu,
the union office bearer and Kamath, the shift in-charge added fuel to the fire. These series of incidents
eventually made the workers resort to violence and cause damage to company property.

PROBLEMS

 The plant head was incapable in handling the crisis

o The crisis situations which were faced were mainly due to demonetization and GST.
Plant Head did not take any initiatives to find out a solution rather decided to cut the
manpower.
 Not making employee friendly decisions
o It was a joint decision of both the plant head and management to increase the working
hours, not compensation for over-time which was not the right decision for the
employees. The decision to dismiss Bhanu without having a talk with the union also
cannot be appreciated.
 Lack of Professionalism and discipline between the employees
o Bhanu’s frequently entering the office late was not a good sign. All the employees of the
company should be aware of the time management, and that should be taken care of by
the management. Kamath’s inability in showing professionalism came to limelight when
he failed to take appropriate action against Bhanu. It clearly shows that there is a flaw
in the company’s policies.
 Lack of communication between workers’ union and management
o There was not an amicable relation between the management and the union even
before the incident. Because of which before strike and violence union did not think of a
discussion.

SOLUTIONS

Management could have done the following to solve the issue: -

 Restructuring of compensation plan specially for the workers who were working overtime.
 Introduction of more professional training and induction for the employees.
 Discussion of the issue by the management with labors union.
 Suspension of Bhanu or salary deduction could have been opted as a disciplinary action against
him for being late instead.
 Introduction of stronger rules on violence and punctuality should have been made and duly
informed to all the employees.
 Counseling sessions should have been conducted for both Kamath and Bhanu.
 Kamath should have handled the situation more professionally.
