iGCSE milestone test 20xx mark scheme

This mark scheme doesn’t contain every possible correct answer, so please use professional
judgement when awarding marks for answers that don’t appear on this mark scheme.

If still in doubt, please contact the TIC (GRST) who will agree a judgement with you.

Error carried forward (ECF) marks only awarded where specified. OWTTE = “or words to that effect”.

All numerical answers must contain the correct unit for award of credit.

Question 11 (total 8 marks)

(a) Acceleration = change in velocity / time (or similar correct relevant equation)

Change in velocity = 10 x 3.2 = 32 m/s. Starts from rest (0 m/s) so final velocity is 32 m/s [1]

(b) Graph will be supplied on a loose sheet, so students can write directly on it.

Straight line from (0,0) to (3.2, 32). Line must not continue further than this point. [1]

(c) Height = distance travelled = area under graph (OWTTE) [1]

Height = ½ x 3.2 x 32 = 51.2 metres (2 or 3 sf ok) [1]

(d) (i) Air resistance increases [1]

(ii) Line should below the one plotted earlier, and labelled Y [1]

Line should be curved [1]

With a steadily decreasing gradient, and goes beyond 3.2 seconds [1]

Accept curve that flattens out to zero gradient after 2.5 seconds.
Question 14 (total 8 marks)

(a) Momentum = mass x velocity (or p = mv) [1]

So momentum = 2000 x 18 = 36 000 kg m/s (unit essential) [1]

(b) (i) Using Principle of Conservation of Momentum, momentum of B =

(36 000 – 21 000) kg m/s = 15 000 kg m/s (ecf from (a) OK) [1]

(ii) Average impulse = change in momentum = 15 000 kg m/s (or Ns)

(same answer as (b) (i)) [1]

(iii) Force = change in momentum / time [1]

= 15 000 / 0.20 = 75 000 N (ecf from (b) (ii) OK, unit essential) [1]

(c) Higher time of contact = lower overall force (OWTTE) [1]

Lower force = lower risk of injury to people in car (OWTTE) [1]
