Breed
A stock of animals or plants within a species having a distinctive appearance and typically having
been developed by deliberate selection
to keep animals for the purpose of producing offspring
Livestock
commonly defined as domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and
commodities such as meat, milk, eggs, fur, leather, and wool
Temperate Breeds
Charolais – white in color, horned and long bodied and good milkers
Simmental and Brown Swiss- red & white in color, outstanding in milk production, butter, and
cheese. Greyish almost turns to white in color, also known for their docile and friendly
disposition
Shorthorn- red in color, rectangular low set of body, wide back and suitable for milk and meat
Hereford- medium to large animals, dark red to red yellow with white face
Angus- breed of black, polled head, compact and low set of body and highest quality rank of
flesh
Tropical Breeds
Ongole (Vellore)- raised by local farmer and traditionally for milk production and as working
animals, gray-white in color, stumpy horns, long body and short necks
Red Sindhi- rich red color, heat resistance and high milk yields
Ankole- medium long head, short neck with a deep dewlap and narrow chest
Holstein Friesian- Black and white, or may vary from white with few black spots to almost black,
300 days lactation period, 22kg of milk (ave. daily milk production), and the largest breed
Jersey- smallest breed, Light fawn, muzzle and tongue are usually black or lead colored,
Brown Swiss- second highest producer of milk that 8 gallons a day
Red Sindhi- 1700 kg of milk, red varying to dark red

Landrace
