5.0 Hazards

5.1 Common Hazards:

The below list consists of the list of common hazards that should be addressed on a
regular basis with regular safety supervision, based on the below, specific risks have
been identified that shall be mitigated by control measures.

 Damage to Buried Services

 Fall Hazards – People / Equipment falling
 Damage to existing structures
 Confined Spaces
 Manual Handling
 Collapse of Excavation
 Dust and Sand Storm
 Lifting equipment failure
 Slip, Trip and Fall
 Drowning or Flooding

5.3.2 Planned provision of and use of excavation support equipment, trench support
is to extend to 250mm from the bottom of the dig.
5.3.3 If ground conditions are that of solid state works may progress but any changes
e.g. Water ingress, loose ground the works must stop and be re assessed.
5.3.4 Excavations to be always backfilled as soon as practicable, if not warning
signage, inspections & adequate fencing used.
5.3.5 Soil and pipes, not to be placed at the edge of the excavation so as to surcharge
it.
5.3.6 Proper tied ladder access extending 1.05m above top of excavation, and placed
into the supported area of the excavation.
5.3.7 Only certified operators & lifting equipment to be used…..SWL is not to be
exceeded for the Excavator being used.
5.3.8 Excavator is banked during excavation work, and stops used on dumpers to
prevent vehicles over running the excavation.

5.4 General Measures

5.4.1 All appropriate safety personal protective equipment shall be worn by workmen
such as helmet, coverall clothing, safety shoes, goggles & gloves.
5.4.2 If welding work is required, additional safety equipment’s shall be worn by all
welders, such as welding mask & goggles, apron & welding gloves.
5.4.3 If work is in high level, only approved scaffolding & safety belts can be used.
5.4.4 During execution of hot works, a fire blanket & extinguisher shall be positioned
at all times.

6.0 Working Method

6.1 Materials List:

 Backfill material A1A, A1B,A24

6.2 Equipment / Tools

 Excavator
 Manual Excavation Tools, Shovel
 Pay Loader
 Compactor
 Total Station
 Meter tape

6.3 Preparation for Excavation (Site Preparation)

 Existing Services – Construction team would conduct an investigation and
acquire information about site services might have been placed/embedded

below the ground. Services, wherever found shall be rerouted and protected to
place will not affect site activities.
 Setting out – Creet Surveyor would conduct the site survey to mark/stake-out
the lines and levels of the objective excavation for foundations as per indicated
in the approved drawing.

6.4 Procedure for Excavation

 The area to be excavated shall be properly marked and clear before starting the
works.
 The depth of excavation shall be periodically checked by a surveyor to avoid
over excavation.
 Excavation slopes shall be constructed in accordance with the lines and
grades shown on the plans and as staked by the Consultant.
 All excavated material shall be kept a minimum of 1.0 meter from the edge of
excavation or shall be stockpiled to the area designated by the Engineer.
 For all excavation activities, adequate safety barriers, sign boards, advance
warning signs would be used.
 For foundation, as soon as the excavation reaches the required depth/elevation
the surface shall be leveled and shall be compacted to 95 % of maximum dry
density or MDD.
 Before the compaction starts, it shall make sure that the excavated level is free
from standing water or excessive moisture content.
 Inspection would be conducted during compaction for checking and approval of
the Consultant.
 The compaction test report shall be submitted to the Consultant for approval
prior to proceed succeeding work.
 Anti-termite treatment would be conducted prior to start blinding works.

6.5 Procedure for Backfilling

 After completion of the compaction under blinding, tie beams and ground slab.
Backfilling shall commence using similar excavated material. Care shall be taken
to remove bolder, vegetation and any other deleterious materials.
 But prior to backfilling, the compacted surface shall be accepted by the
Consultant
 The sub-grade once approved, the excavated materials or any material source
approved by the Consultant shall be placed in layers not more than 300 mm
thick followed by compaction test when the surface level is ready.
 In-situ dry density test (compaction test) shall be performed at the rate
indicated in the specification.
 Back filling followed with compaction shall continue till final level is achieved.
