PROJECT: BREWERY WHARF BRIDGE

METHOD STATEMENT

Preparation/Safety

 All students and staff will undergo a site safety induction on the first day
 At the beginning and end of each following day all students and staff will attend a site safety
briefing
 All team members will be required to wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment)
at all times including: a hardhat, hi-visibility jacket, work boots, work gloves, and safety
goggles

Organising Reinforcement

 Reinforcement will be organised into section specific bars

 Reinforcement will be stored in a waterproof unit before leaving the site
 Reinforcement will be checked prior to fixing and again prior to placing for any flaws

Steel fixing sequence

 The reinforcement to be fixed will be assembled at the fixing site.
 Any additional cutting of reinforcement bars will be done by a trained person using an
appropriate powered saw.
 The steel will be marked to the centres of the required spacing.
 The bottom mat of reinforcement will then be fixed together using wire and fixing tools.
 ‘Chair’s will be put in place to ensure that the top reinforcement mat is kept at a constant
height above the bottom mat.
 The top mat of reinforcement will then be fixed together using wire and fixing tools.
 Any excess wire from the steel fixing will be removed to clean out the final reinforcing mesh.

Foundation Construction Sequence

 The ground will be compacted to the required level

 A polythene sheet will be put down and spacers put in place to provide minimum concrete
cover.
 A 50mm thick concrete blinding will be poured
 The setting out team are responsible for setting out the line of all foundations (1,2,and 3) as
well as the connecting slab between foundation 2 and 3 on top of the blinding
 The formwork team and site supervisor will erect shutters for foundations 1, 2, and 3 as well
as the connecting slab between foundation 2 and 3, using traditional methods
 Reinforcement will be fixed according to drawings P16.03 and P16.05 and specific bending
schedules in a separate work area
PROJECT: BREWERY WHARF BRIDGE
METHOD STATEMENT

 The reinforcement cages will be transported from the work area to the site of the
foundations by inserting lifting rods
 Reinforcement will positioned in formwork prior to pouring concrete

RC Deck and A-Frame Construction Sequence

 The setting out team are responsible for setting out the line of the RC decks and A-frame
 The formwork team and site supervisor will erect shutters for the RC decks and A-frame,
using traditional methods
 A suspended frame will be erected to fix the steel reinforcement
 Reinforcement will be fixed according to drawings P16.03 and P16.05 and specific bending
schedules on the casting deck
 When fixing the A-frame connection more reinforcement may be required, and will be cut
and bent as required
 Reinforcement will positioned in formwork by machine prior to pouring concrete

Bridge Assembly Sequence

 The A-frame will be provisionally placed into foundation 2 using a 30 ton excavator and
adequate temporary works
PROJECT: BREWERY WHARF BRIDGE
METHOD STATEMENT

 The concrete team will grout the A-frame into place

 When the excavator will lift the A frame the ground workers will have to clear of the crane
operation area and there shouldn’t be anyone beneath the load while the equipment is
being operated.
 The excavator will be banked at all times by a professional banksman to ensure the safety of
workers and prevent obstruction of the excavator.

 The RC decks will be provisionally installed using a mobile crane and adequate temporary
works
 The tension cables will be installed with their full structural engagement under the
supervision of the site manager
 The temporary works will be removed and a quality assessment carried out by the site
supervisor

Quality Control

 Check to ensure that there is proper cover distance and that the steel is fixed properly to the
drawings provided.

METHOD STATEMENT

RISK EVALUATION

This is calculated by multiplying the likelihood against the consequence e.g. taking a likelihood of 1, which is classified as Unlikely and
multiplying this against a Potential Consequence of 2, which is classified as Significant Injury, would give you and overall Risk Rating of 2,
which would result in an overall evaluation as a low risk.

1 to 2 = Low risk

Low risks are largely acceptable, monitor periodically to determine situation changes which may affect the risk, or after
significant changes

3 to 4 = Medium risk

Medium risks at the upper end of this band should only be tolerated for the short-term and then only whilst further control measures to
mitigate the risk are being planned and introduced, within a defined time period. Risks on the lower end should be reduced if practicable.

6 = High risk

High risks activities should cease immediately until further control measures to mitigate the risk are introduced. The continued effectiveness
of control measures must be monitored periodically.

9 = Extreme Risk

Work should not be started or continued until the risk has been mitigated. Immediate action is required to reduce exposure. A
detailed mitigation plan must be developed, implemented and monitored by senior management to reduce the risk before work
is allowed to commence.
