Committee Reports
FCS 380
TIFFANY HARTLEY
During the semester each student in the class was giving at least one role as a committee
member. The roles that I received were Secretary of Adult Education, Treasurer of Adult
Education, and Secretary of the Madison 4-H Camp. I also was assigned to contact two different
people to visit on the field trip, take part in designing the obstacle course and a project for the 4-
H camp and for Adult Education, to call and schedule a teaching experience.
While being the secretary for Adult Education I kept record of everything that was
discussed in class and tried to keep track of the different tasks and who they were assigned to. I
wrote down the different places that we could teach. Out of the nine different places only four
people said yes and of those four only one actually kept in contact with us. The place that I was
supposed to call was the Rehabilitative Health Services center (RHS). They agreed to have us
come and teach but they would never answer my calls or emails after they accepted. I spent
about 2 hours working as secretary and 30 min trying to contact the RHS Center. I was only the
Treasurer for Adult Education for 30 minutes and didn’t take any notes.
As being the secretary of the Madison 4-H camp my role was to take notes and make sure
that we didn’t forget anything important. At the start of each meeting I would summarize what
we talked about the time before and help those who weren’t present to be able to know what we
talked about. While planning the activities that we wanted to do it was beneficial to have all of
the ideas written down so we could vote on which ones we liked better and remember what the
different subjects were for each one. We spent about 2 hours in class planning and revising our
projects.
As part of the 4-H Camp each member was asked to design and test one of the different
project ideas and create a station where the kids could come and interact. I was in charge of
coming up with an activity that had to do with boats. I spent about 7 hours trying to get the boats
to work. I tried several different materials and ultimately found out that tin foil works the best.
The kids were to build a boat out of tin foil and see how much weight it could hold. They were
allowed to make a few different boats and test them out and try to build the best boat that can
hold the most weight. For the obstacle course we planned to cut up different shapes out of boxes
that the children can jump over or crawl through. We were unable to complete planning this
project due to the unseen circumstances but we spent around 2 hours coming up with different
For the field trip I was asked to contact two different companies or schools that we could
come and visit. I chose to call the Frank Church Alternative High School in Boise and Mi Pueblo
Bakery in Twin Falls. For the visit to Frank Church the teacher there, Sister Mileski, decided to
have us teach her class and have a different experience than most students would while getting
their education. At Mi Pueblo Bakery we took a tour of the store and learned the different aspects
of a deli, bakery and store. I spent 4 hours planning everything out and calling the necessary
people.
While being on these committees I learned that there is more to planning than just
scheduling a day and time. Working in committees was a lot easier because we were able to
delegate the different parts and rely on one another. I really enjoyed being the secretary of both
the Adult Ed and 4-H Camp. It was interesting how different both of the groups were. In the
Adult Education group we had to rely more on outside contacts. We had to reach out and get
other people involved which ended up being a lot harder. For the 4-H camp we just relied on our
committee and were able to complete the necessary tasks quicker and more effectively. I have
learned through this experience to organize notes better and keep a more detailed record. I also
learned that it is hard to rely on people outside of the committee to work in a timely manner.
