Sheet 3 Topic : Transformer Tests
Level 3 Date : 4/04/2014

1. Explain using circuit diagrams the experimental tests which could be performed to determine the
different parameters of the core and windings of the power transformer. In each test write down the
safety and protection precautions should be taken into consideration in each test.

2. Explain using circuit diagrams the purpose and procedure of DC test of power transformer.

3. In a no load test of a single phase 220/110V transformer, the following test data were obtained:
Ammeter reading = 0.5A
Wattmeter reading = 30w
Find the following: (i) working and magnetizing components of no load current.
(ii) Iron losses if the primary resistance is 0.6
(iii) Draw the phasor diagram.

4. Obtain the equivalent circuit of 200/400V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer from the following test
data: open circuit: 200V, 0.7A, 70W on L.V side.
Short circuit: 15V, 10A, 85W on H.V side.

5. The equivalent circuit impedances of a 20kVA, 8000/240V, 60Hz transformer are to be determined.
The open circuit test and the short circuit test were performed on the primary side of the transformer,
and the following data were taken:

Open circuit test: 8000 V, 0.214 A, 400 W

Short circuit test: 489 V, 2.5 A, 240 W

Find the impedance of the approximate equivalent circuit referred to the primary side, and sketch the
circuit.

6. A 1000-VA 230/115-V transformer has been tested to determine its equivalent circuit. The results of
the tests are shown below: (pb 2-3 chapman)
Open circuit test: 230V, 0.45A, 30W
Short circuit test: 19.1V, 8.7A, 42.3W

All data given were taken from the primary side of the transformer.

(a) Find the equivalent circuit of this transformer referred to the low-voltage side of the transformer.

(b) Find the transformer’s voltage regulation at rated conditions and

(1) 0.8 PF, lagging. (2) Unity PF. (3) 0.8 PF, leading.

(c) Determine the transformer’s efficiency at rated conditions and 0.8 PF lagging.
