Dear Families,

We are studying the exploration of fractions. We will develop an understanding of

fractions as numbers. Many students are able to identify fractions when they see them.
The students need to be able to identify what the fraction is and show how much it
represents. They will identify that a fraction represents a part of a whole or any number
of equal parts. A fraction describes how many parts of a certain size there are, for
example, one-half, eight-fifths, three-quarters. We will study that a simple fraction
consists of an integer numerator displayed above a line and a non-zero integer
denominator displayed below that line. I will be sending home cut out fractions for the
students to use.

Practice Ideas:
1. Your kids probably already know how to play War with cards. This version just
adds a fraction aspect. Students deal two cards, a numerator and denominator,
then determine whose fraction is the largest. The winner keeps all four cards,
and play continues until the cards are gone.
2. Provide a variety of food images cut from magazines or printed out from the
Internet. Students plan a picnic and choose the food they want to bring along.
Using a ruler and scissors, cut portions of their food choices and glue them to a
paper plate. Finally, label each item with the fraction name. Bon appétit!

Enjoy,
Miss Glass
